Description

Feh's, 1944. w. J. ELDREDGE BLOTTINGATTACHMENT Filed May 15 1945 I/NVE/VTU/L WALTER J. -E.L.DRED6E,.
Patented Feb. 8, 1944 UNITED STATES FATENT OFFICE BLOTTING ATTACHMENT Walter J. Eldredge, San Francisco, Calif. Application May 15, 1943, Serial No. 487,407
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in a blotting attachment for blank books and the like, wherein an extension hingedly connected to a free edge of one of the covers of said book and foldable thereinto coextensively with and between the leaves or pages thereof, is provided with a blotting element to blot fresh ink entries on any page or leaf or on either or both surfaces of adjacent or facing pages or leaves.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved blotting attachment for blank books and the like.
Another object is to provide a new and improved article of manufacture of the character set forth, having improved means for blotting fresh ink entries on any page or on either or both pages or leaves of adjacent or facing pages of a blank book or the like.
A further object is to provide a simple and effective blotting attachment adapted to also serve as a book mark to locate latest entries, or space for new entries.
A still further object is to provide a new and improved device of the type described which may also operate as an additional enclosure to protect unused leaves or pages of a blank book and also prevent the entrance of dust or dirt, while closed.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the present application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open blank book, with my improvement attached thereto;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the blotting attachment in position for blotting a fresh ink entry on one page or leaf; and
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the closed book with the blotting attachment folded thereinto and blotting adjacent or facing leaves or pages simultaneously.
Referring to the drawing:
The numeral I is used to designate the front cover of a blank book and 2 the back cover thereof, both covers I and 2 enclosing the usual blank leaves or pages 3 in the usual manner.
Hingedly connected to one free edge of preferably the back cover 2 is an extension 4, of substantially the same size and shape as the back cover 2, and foldable for insertion within the book and between the leaves 3 therein and substantially coextensive with said leaves 3.
A blotting attachment 6, preferably formed by folding a blotter of the correct size and shape upon itself is mounted on both sides of the extension 4, as disclosed in Figure 1 of the drawing, said blotting attachment also being coextensive with the leaves or pages 3 of the book.
In operation, a fresh ink entry or entries I and 8 having been made on either or both pages 8 and 9, respectively, of the book, the entry 8 on page 9, for instance, may be instantly and effectively blotted by folding the extension 4 and its blotting element 6 directly onto said page 9, as disclosed in Figure 2 of the drawing.
By closing the front cover, page 8 and preceding pages directly onto the blotting attachment 6, page 8 is also blotted.
While in this position, it should be particularly noted that the blotting element 6 also serves as a book mark to locate the last entry made, or available space for new entries, thus facilitating the finding or locating of required data or space for new entries, with a consequent saving of time and labor.
It should also be particularly noted that While the blotting element 6 is in this position, the outer edges or corners of all new and following unused pages or leaves 3 are substantially enclosed between the back cover 2 and said blotting element 6, and thereby protected against dogears, other damage or dirt and their original unsullied surfaces and cleanliness preserved.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved blotting attachment for blank books and the like that may easily be inserted to cover and blot fresh ink entries on any single page as well as any pair of adjacent or facing pages or leaves. It is also obvious that by means of my improved blotting attachment, blotting means are always immediately available at the instant required.
Having described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a blank book having leaves mounted between a front and a back cover, of an extension hingedly connected to one free edge of said back cover and foldable into said book and coextensively between the leaves therein; and a blotted folded upon itself and mounted upon both sides of said hinged extension.
WALTER J ELDREDGE.
