Claims.
This invention relates to sewing` machines and has for its object to `facilitate 'manipulation of an. oil-tight device actuable from the Aexterior oi the sewing machine frame for controlling a member disposed within saidirame.
More specifically, the invention has for its object to facilitate adjustment off'an actuatingveccentric, housed in an oil-tight. sewing machine frame, by the provision of 4oil-tight means readily operable from the exterior'of said frame for con trolling an adjusting member disposed withinthe frame and associated with said eccentric.
With the above and other more specific objects in View, the invention consists in the adjusting'n member controlling'device for an actuating eccentric, as hereinafter described in connection with ythe accompanyingv drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention-rand in which:

The drawing illustrates the present improvement as embodied in a feed-oT-arm sewingmachine such as shown and described in the U. S. patent of W. Myers, No. 1,999,978, April 30,1935. The sewing machine has the usual frame including a horizontally disposed hollow` work-arm I0 supportedv by a carriernarm I I which is co planar with the work-arm. The work-arm l com,- prises a trough-shaped casing closed at its top by a detachable cover-plate I2 which includes a separately detachable throat-plate I3. The cover-plate i2 is securedupon the work-arm in a manner to provide an oil-tight closure and com-` to` extend wall.V of the work-armv It; Carried by the shaft IA for rotation therewith are bevel-gears I and III; for driving suitable loop-takers disposed within the work-arm Itl'at the free end thereof for cooperation with needles, as i8, in the formation of stitches.

Thefeed-bar 2l, at its end opposite the feeddog, is integrally provided with a laterally offset fork 23 straddling a` feed-lift eccentric 24 carried by the actuating shaft I il for rotation there-l with. The eccentric 2li imparts rocking movements to the feed-bar 2| and therefore rising and fallingmovements to the ieed-dog I t.
Secured, by screws 25, upon the feed-bar ZI for adjustment lengthwise thereof, is the shank ZIS` of a. fork Z1 slidably straddling a block` 28 embracing a feed-advance eccentric 29; the fork 2 extending transversely of the feed-lift fork 23 whereby the eccentric Zilimparts endwise reciprocatory movements to the feed-bar 2L The feed-advance eccentric 29 is secured upon the actuating shaft ifi, within the Worbarm Il), for adjustment ofthe eccentricity of the eccentric; the construction ofthe eccentric 29 corresponding substantially with the eccentric disclosed in the U. S. patent to A. Grieb, No. 1,605,937, Nov. 9, 1926.
In general, the actuating eccentric-29 embraces anadjusting eccentric 3l? associated therewith and disposed upon the shaft it for angular adjustment about said shaft. The eccentric 29 has a flange 3I providedwith. a radial slot 32 in which apiVot-block 33 is slidingly disposed. The pivot-` block 33 is carried by a shouldered anchor'pin 3,4 projecting from a side face of a.- supporting disk 35. The disk 35 is seated upon the hub-extensionit` of the 1oop-taker actuating hevel-gear IB- and is suitably secured to said bevel-gear for rotation therewith. Consequently,v the anchor,
pin 34 constitutes a driving connection .for ro tating the eccentric 29 from the shaft ill.
The anchor-pin 34 extends freely through an arcuate slot 3l provided in a iiange 38 of the adjusting-eccentric 30; the flange 38 being disposed between the ange 3l of the eccentric 249,
and the supporting disk 35. The adjusting-member, comprising the eccentric 30 and its flange 38, is secured to the supporting disk 35 for rotation therewith during the normal operation of the machine, but in a manner permitting relative turning movements of said adjusting member and supporting disk for purposes of adjustment of the eccentricity of the eccentric 29. To that end, the side face of the adjusting-member flange 38, adjacent the eccentric-flange 3|, is provided with an annular groove 39 affording a clearance recess for a friction-plate 40 and for the heads of screws 4| passing freely through the arcuate slot 31 in the flange 38; said screws 4| being threaded into the supporting disk 35. Friction-washers 42 are preferably interposed between the friction-plate 48 and the heads of the screws 4|.
The flange 38 of the adjusting member is peripherally provided with a stop-notch 43 adapted to receive a detent which is manually operable to hold said adjusting member against rotation with the shaft I4. It is a specic object of the present invention to provide an oil-tight detent device readily operable from the exterior of the work-arm I for restraining the adjusting- member 30, 38 against rotation while effecting adjustment of the actuating eccentric 29 by turning the shaft I4.
In accordance with the present improvement, a bearing-block 44 is secured by screws 45 to the under or inner face of the cover-plate |2 which comprises a wall of the hollow work-arm I0. In its face proximate to the cover-plate |2, the bearing-block 44 is provided with a clearance-recess or cavity 46 which is closed inwardly of the work-arm by the oil-guarding bottom wall of the bearing-block. Opening into the bearingblock cavity 46 is an aperture 41 provided in the cover-plate I2 vertically above said cavity.
The bearing-block 44 is horizontally apertured to provide a bearing for a'spindle 48 confined to rocking movement in the bearing-block. One end of the spindle 43 carries a lateral arm 49 which is shouldered at its free end to provide a detent 50 adapted to engage the adjusting device 36, 38, in the stop-notch 43 thereof. The detent-arm 49 is confined to move in a clearancenotch I provided in a narrow extension 44 of the bearing-block and cut into said extension from the under side thereof. The clearancenotch 5| therefore confines the spindle 48 against endwise movement, while the detent-arm 49 and the block-extension 44 function as oil-guards for the spindle bearing aperture of the block 44.
The other end of the spindle 48 extends into the bearing-block cavity 46 and is provided in said cavity with a crank-arm 52 having a split end thereof clamped upon the spindle 48 by a screw 53. The other end of the crank-arm 52 is provided with a recess 54 entered by a spring 55 interposed between the crank-arm and the bottom wall of the bearing-block cavity 46. The spring 55 biases the spindle 48 upwardly into a position of the detent-arm 49 retracted from the adjusting device notch 43.
The upper face of the spindle crank-arm 52 is provided with a contact rib 56 engaged by the under face of a manually operable push-button 51 movably disposed in the aperture 41 of the cover-plate l2 so as to be readily accessible eX- teriorly of the work-arm I0. The aperture 41 is undercut at the inner face of the cover-plate |2 to receive a peripheral rib 58 of the push-button 51, thereby limiting outward movement of the push-button and determining the retracted position of the detent 50 under the action of the spring 55. The leverage afforded by the spindle crank-arm 52 provides for manual operation of the detent 50 with a minimum of effort.
At the end of the work-arm I0 connected to the carrier-arm the frame of the machine is shaped to provide a well 59 adapted to contain a supply of lubricant into which dips the feedactuating mechanism. In the operation of the .machina the work-arm is lled with an oil-mist due to the oil-splashing action of the feed actuating mechanism, and it is essential that oil will not escape through the cover-plate aperture 41 and be deposited upon the outer face of the work-arm I0. By housing the endwise movable push-button 51 and the crank-arm 52 in the cavity 46 of the cover-plate bearing-block, and by transmitting the movement of the push-button 51 to the detent 5|] by means of a rocking spindle journaled in the bearing-block, the likelihood of discharging Aoil through the cover-plate aperture 41 upon operation of the push-button is eliminated.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is:
1. A sewing machine having a hollow frame including a wall provided with a cavity closed inwardly of said frame, a rotary actuating eccentric adjustably disposed within said hollow frame externally of said cavity, an adjusting device associated With said eccentric within said frame', a detent disposed within said frame externally of said cavity for engagement with said adjusting device, and connections for actuating said detent including a manually operable member accessible from the exterior of said frame and extending into said cavity, said detent being spaced from said member a substantial distance laterally of the path of movement of said member.
2. A sewing machine having a hollow frame including a wall provided with a cavity closed inwardly of said frame, a rotary actuating eccentric adjustably disposed within said hollow frame, an adjusting device associated with said eccentric within said frame, a spindle journaled for rocking movement in said wall of the frame and having one end thereof extending into said cavity, a detent carried by the other end of said spindle for engagement with said adjusting device, and means for rocking said spindle including a manually operable member accessible from the exterior of said frame and extending into said cavity.
3. A sewing machine having a hollow frame including a wall provided with an aperture, a rotary actuating eccentric adjustably disposed within said hollow frame, an adjusting device associated with said eccentric within said frame, a spindle journaled in said wall for rocking movement and extending transversely of'said aperture, a detent carried by one end of said spindle within said frame for engagement with said adjusting device, and means for rocking said spindle including a manually operable button endwise movably disposed in said aperture of the frame.
4. A sewing machine having a hollow frame, a rotary actuating eccentric disposed within said hollow frame and adjustable as to eccentricity, an adjusting device associated with said eccentric within said frame, a bearing-block extending from a wall of the frame and recessed to provide a cavity closed inwardly of said frame, a spring-biased spindle journaled for rocking movetric disposed within said hollow frame, an adm justing device associated with said eccentric, a
bearing-block carried by the inner face of said cover-plate and having. a wall providing an oilguard closure for said aperture inwardly of said frame, a detent disposed Within said frame and pivotally mounted upon said bearing block for engagement with said adjusting device, detentactuating connections carried by said bearingblock, and means operable through said aperture for actuating said connections.
