  • This invention relates to a novel clip adapted to be welded to the plating on ships to form a temporary means for fastening or attaching objects thereto, suchas props orshores, and to a tool or mechanism whereby the clip may beremoved from the plating by cutting and thus overcoming the necessity of removing such clip by means of acetylene torches which burn awaythe weld and render the clip unfit for further use. This invention relates to a novel clip adapted to be welded to the plating on ships to form a temporary means for fastening or attaching objects thereto, suchas props orshores, and to a tool or mechanism whereby the clip may beremoved from the plating by cutting and thus overcoming the necessity of removing such clip by means of acetylene torches which burn awaythe weld and render the clip unfit for further use. It is particularly aimed to provide a construction whereby the cutting tool or apparatus may be anchored effectively on the clip for stability during the cutting operation.
In addition it is aimed to provide a novel frame adapted to surround the clip, mounting one or more of the cutters in' combination with slidable means on the frame carrying another cutter and which is adapted to be adjusted or fed as cutting proceeds.
I also aim to provide a novel form of clip generally in the shape of a disc having a diametric lug projecting forwardly therefrom and provided with an opening which functions dually to accommoda-te a fastening to engage a wooden prop, shore, or the like, and also adapted to be engaged by means carried by the tool or apparatus to effect the anchorage and stability heretofore mentioned and in order to hold the clip after its detachment by cutting from the ship plating.
Various additional objects will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing the improved apparatus in connection with a fragment of ship plating having a clip welded thereon;

Referring specifically to the-drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, l0 represents a fragment of metallic ship plating against which it is common to weld clips, usually short pieces of angle iron, with openings therethrough, so that fastenings may be driven through the openings to secure objects in place, such as wooden props or shores. In lieu of the angle iron clips I use clips of the form detailed in Figure 6 and which have round or metallic disc bases at II, which are welded at one face l2 to the plating l0; Projecting diametrically outwardly from the base H is a horizontal lug l2 provided with a central vertical opening at I3. Fastening means may be driven through the opening [3 into an object such as the prop or shoring. To facilitate engagement of the disc by cutting means to remove the same, the disc preferably is undercut as at l4.
Said clip has a hole designated C, and I provide a novel tool or cutting apparatus therefor which particularly coacts therewith, the same being shown at T. Such apparatus has a frame l5 having a loop at IS with an opening I! therethrough elongated or enlarged so as to fit over a clip such as C, to move sufiiciently relatively to the clip to enable cutting and removal of the latter from the plating I0.
At the back of frame [,5 the latter carries a suitable number of disc cutters 18 which are carried by shafts l9 removably mounted in the frame 15 but normally held against movement relative-- -ly to the frame by binding screws at 20. An-
other disc cutter 2l, similar to those at I8 is adapted to coact therewith to enter the undercut I4 and to cut clip C at the Weld from the plating I0.
Said cutter 2i is carried by a slide designated 22 as a whole. This slide consists of a plate 23 at the outer side of frame l5 and a plate 24 which is slidably mounted and guided in a relatively wide slot 25 of the frame extending from the opening I1. Plate 23 overlaps the outer face of the frame and a plate or cleat 25 overlaps the other face of the plate, all of which plates being secured together by screws or the like 26. The cutter 2| has a stub shaft 21 removably but rigidly fastened to the slide 22 by a binding screw as at 28.
In order to adjust or movethe slide 22 a manually operable screw rod 29 is provided having a handle 30 at one end and at the other end having a ball 3| journaled in a sectional socket 32 provided on the plate 23. Such screw rod 29 passes through an enlarged guide opening 33 in a lug ,34 on the plate 23 and also through a screwthreaded sleeve or nut 35 pivotally mounted at 36 in an enlarged opening 31 of an angular lug 38 provided at one end of the frame 15.
Projecting forwardly from the loop l6 are integral or other spacers 39 and against the same an auxiliary loop 40 is disposed but the inner edge of which is disposed outwardly of the inner edges of spacers 39. A retaining loop 4| is disposed against the loop 40 and set screws or the like 42 may be passed through the loops 40 and 4| into the screw-threaded openings 42' of spacers 39 to secure the parts together.
Retained by the tool Or apparatus T and loose with respect thereto is a coupling generally designated 43. This coupling has a disc-like base or plate 44 which is overlapped by the retainer loop 4| and the spacers 39, being retained therebetween and of less size than the interior space or opening of the auxiliary loop 40. A handle 01' stem 45 projects'diametrically from the disc 44 and outwardly through the'open'ing of the retaining loop 4! and beyond'the same has aligned opening 46 accommodating a wedge key 4'! engageable in the aforesaid'openingl3 of the clip, the lug 12 of the latter extending into the hollow space 48 of the'handle or stem 45.
When a clip such as C is to be removed from the platin l0, frame 15 and associated parts are centered with respect thereto with the cutters l8 and 2| disposed in the undercut l4, aided by the adjustment afforded by screw rod 29 and the slide 22. In this position: the lug 12 extends into the stem 45 and the latter and the tool as a whole are anchored to the lug, by passing the key 41 through the opening 13 of the lug. Following this operation, the cutters l8 and 2| being properly adjusted, the tool'T is turned as a whole about the clip and from time to time screw 29 is adjusted to feed the cutter 2| the necessary amount, as the cutting operation progresses. When the clip has been completely out or severed from the plating I it still will be retained by the tool T since it is coupled thereto by key 41. The clip thus is removed without danger of burning or other injury thereto and is in condition for reuse.
Various changes may beresorted to provided that they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a clip on plating, a tool having means operableto cut the clip from said plating, and interconnecting means between the clip and tool functioning to stabilize the tool during the cutting operation and to retain the detached clip before and independently of the first-mentioned means.
2. In combination with a clip on plating, a tool having means operable to cut the clip from said plating, and interconnecting means between the clip and tool functioning to stabilize the tool during the cutting operation, the clip having a stud provided, with an opening, a coupling on the tool, said coupling having an opening and being hollow to receive the stud so that a key or the like may be passed through the opening.
3. A tool of the class described comprising a frame, said frame having an opening to enable part of a clip to extend therethrough, a movable means on the frame, a cutter on the movable means, cutter means on the remainder of the frame, said cutter and cutter means being disposed to cut a clip from plating or the like, and
coupling. means carried by the frame for attachment to said clip part to hold the frame and clip means against relative movement andto retain the detached clip independently of the cutter and cutter means.
4. A tool of the class described comprising a frame, said frame having an opening to enable part of a clip to extend therethrough, a movable means on the frame, a cutter on the movable means, cutter means on the remainder of the frame, said cutter and. cutter means being disposed to cut a clip from plating or the like, and coupling means carried by the frame for attachment to said clip part to hold the frame and clip means against relative movement and to retain the detached clip independently of the cutter and cutter means, including a base movably mounted by and relatively to the frame, and a part projecting from the base adapted to be secured to said clip part.
5. A tool of the class described comprising a frame, said frame having an opening to enable part of a clip to extend therethrough, a movable means on the frame, a cutter on the movable means, cutter means on the remainder of the frame, said cutter and cutter means being disposed to cut a clip from plating or the like, and
coupling means carried by the frame for attachment to said clip part to hold the frame and clip means against relative movement and to retain the detached clip independently of the cutter and cutter means, including a base movably mounted by and relatively to the frame, and a part projecting from the base adapted to be secured to said clip part, the base having spacing means and a retaining loop on opposite sides of said base, said frame having a slot, said movable means being a slide having a part guided in said slot, and screw means operatively connected to the slide and to said base.
