Patented Nov. 2, 1880-.
P; JOHNSON.
Eye Protector.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
POWELL JOHNSON, OF BARTON, ALABAMA.
EYE-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,039, dated November 2, 1880.
Application filed June 29, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PowELL JoHNsoN, a citizen of Alabama, residing at Barton, in the county of Colbert and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as, will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in eye-protectors foruse of furnace-men, puddlers, firemen, and others exposed to glare of strong light, as well as persons of weak sight, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan; Fig. 3, a Vertical section on line at x of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a modification of one of the pieces of cloth, showing a slit in the center.
A A represent two wire frames or hoops, of circular or oval shape, and similar to spectacle-hoops, aboutor within which are fastened disks of cloth, A A, of any desired color or description, and may be of different thicknesses, as necessity requires. These hoops A A are connected by the wire nose-bridge D, over which and extending from. hoop to hoop is a piece of cloth similar to those between the hoops A A, for greater protection. G G are temples hinged to frames A A.
For persons of weak sight a small hole, a, Fig. 4, is made throughthe cloth disks A A, enabling them to see through the said hole and still have the eye shaded from the light.
In order to more fully protect the eye from light of very great intensity, I place in front of the hoops A A at a short distance therefrom, a second pair of hoops or frames, B B,
(No model.)
likewise provided with cloth disks B B, of suitable color and thickness.
The two pairs of hoops are connected by the 4 5 side pieces, E E, hinged to the hoops at each end. The hoops B B are connected in front by a clasp, 0. When desired the clasp G can be unhooked, and the hoops B B thrown back and to the side out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2.
The cloth disks B B may have slits at their centers corresponding to the slits a in the disks A, Fig. 4.
The side pieces, E E, may be fixed to the frames, instead of hinged, the clasp C also rigidly fastened between the hoops D B, thus making the second pair of hoops immovable upon the first.
The protectoris to be worn similarly to spectacles.
Having described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An eye-protector consisting of two sets of hoops or frames,A A and B B, having cloth disks inserted therein and connected by side pieces, E E, and clasp O, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in an eye-protector, of one set of hoops, A A, having cloth disks A A, of suitable color and thickness, inserted therein, with a second pair of hoops, B B, likewise having cloth disks B B therein, the two sets being held apart either rigidly or movably by side pieces, E E, and clasp 0, attached to them, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
POWELL JOHNSON. Witnesses:
M. I. GREEN, M. L. LINDEN.
