Referring now to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral I5 designates a portion of the bed or shoe of a die-set, or a portion of a perforatlng or stamping press, and I6 the punch part of our improved device which co-operates with a die part I1 positioned in spaced relation to thevpunch Dart for insertion therebetween of the sheet metal or other material to be perforated or punched'. This device is preferably used in presses in. which the ram or bed of the press, and in some instances both the ram and bed, are movedin 'a vertical' or substantially vertical plane, or in connection with a die-set, the ram of which is at# tached to the ram of a lpress and the bed or shoe 0f' which is attached to the bed of the press'.
This device may, however, be placed within a press in which the bed is inclined to the horizontal, as is the ram in view of the fact that in such presses the relative movement of the .rain and bed is at an acute angle to the verticalfand if a die-set is inserted in a press of this kind, the ram and shoe of the die-set is correspondingly in clined and the relative movement of'such parts is similar to that of the ram and bed of *the` press.l l? Through the top of the housing or body portion anoil-duct 3.1 is formed so that the rotatable motion transferring or changing element 3l may be properly lubricated for free action. and fitted thereinto 'is' a' punch 52 whichV mayhave any desired shape'and its outer end may' be'of anydesired' diameter, depending upon the punch opening'in the die 26 which is to receivey the same. g This punch is provided with a notch- 53 near its Vinner. end'to receive the reduced and Unthreaded inner'end of asecuring screw 54 threadedj into a diagonally-disposed tapped opening formed in the plunger. In this manner the punch is securely but removably fastened into the plunger, thus allowing ready replace ment of punches of different sizes. It is of course apparent that the axes of the die 26 and the punch 52 are coincident.
This punch is associated with a stripper piece or head 55 which rests upon the riser or elevating 'piece 2l and is secured to that end of the housing adjacent the die 26 so as to surround the punch. This stripper piece or head is provided with a bore or passage 56 which is reduced in diameter step by step from its inner end outwardly. The largest or innermost portion of this bore or passage is of a diameter conforming to that of the plunger bore 39, and this may, depending on the thickness of the stock being punched or perforated and the movement of the ram of the press, receive the adjacent end of the plunger.Y The intermediateportion of this bore or passage is' of a size to Vpermit the free en-` trance thereinto of the largest portion of the punch projecting from the plunger, and the smallest or outermost portion of this bore or passage is of a size to allow the extremity or punch portion of the punch to be guided thereby or pass freely therethrough, as may be desired.
In the embodiment of our invention illustrated, both the actuator 40 and the plunger 44 are cylindrical, but these may be otherwise formed in cross section if desired. When the plunger is used in cylindrical form, it has a key 51 secured thereto which is slidable in a key way 58 formed in the plunger bore 39, thus preventing rotation of said plunger. The plunger is provided with a notch 59 so as to form a shoulder BEI thereon which is engaged by thle radial shoulder 35 formed on the motion-transferring or changing element 3|. When employing a cylindrical actuator and a cylindrical plunger, the notches 32 and 33 in the motion-transferring or changing element 3l and the notch 59 in the plunger are provided with the curved walls 3S so that portions of the actuator and plunger may fit within said notches. When, however, the actuator and plunger are given a square or other crosssectional formation, a change in the form of the notches 32 and 33 is made so as to conform to the cross-sectional shape of the actuator and plunger. In the event that the plunger is given a cross-sectional shape which will not permit its rotation within its receiving bore, the key 51 may be dispensed with, as this key is used only to guard against rotation of a cylindrical plunger, which would cause the notch therein to become disalined with its co-acting notch in the motiontransferring or changing element 3l.
In Fig. 1 we have shown only a portion of a cylindrical object to be perforated or punched, but the broken upper end of this object indicates considerable height for the same, necessitating adjustment of the ram of a press and the ram of a die-set when used .in a press, so that it will be normally spaced a considerable distance above our device; it being necessary to provide suicient clearance between the ram and bed for insertion of the object to be perforated or punched therebetween. In such instances provision is made so that the ram in its movement, or the bed, as the case may be, will not strilre an inserted object to be perforated 4or punched. For this reason the upper end of the actuator' 40 is axially bored and tapped, as at 62, an extension or lengthener 63 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and partly shown in Fig. 3, is attached to the actuator proper, the extension having at its lower end an axial stud (not shown) which is adapted to be threaded into the tapped bore 62, and the striking endof the actuator', thusv lengthened, reaches a level which is above the highest point of the object inserted in the press or die-set, so that the movement of the ram, or the bed of the press, as the case may be, need not be increasedand merely an adjustment for proper spacing between the ram and bed is required. These actuator extensions may be of dilerent lengths, or several extensions maybe connected together` in which case each extenpress to cause rotation of the motion-transferring or changing element 3 I, which in turn has caused movement of the plunger 44 toward the left against the force of the spring 41, such movement having projected the punch 52 through the stripper head 55, and the rim or ange 20 of the object or article inserted in the press, with the result that the punch has entered the die and caused the slug to be punched from the object and passed into the die, from which it passes into the passage 21. The slugs are delivered through the passage 21 and fall onto the shoe of the die-set or bed of the press, as the case may be, from which they can be removed at convenient times.
In Fig. 7 we have illustrated a plurality of punching or perforating devices mounted on the shoe of a die-set or the bed of a press, prepared to punch or perforate a circular or arcuate rimor flange at spaced-apart points. The distances between such points may of course be increased or diminished, as required. In this particular arrangement, the punching or perforating de# vices are radially disposed, and upon lowering the ram of a press or raising the bed of a press, as the case may be, the rim or flange shown isl punched out or perforated at three points.
In Figs. 1l to 13 we have shown plungers provided with a plurality of punch points. In Figs, 11 and l2 the plunger illustrated is of square formation in cross section, but may be given any other cross-sectional form. It has secured to one end thereof a punch plate 64 by means of screws 65. At any desired points in this punch plate, punch-receiving holes 66 are drilled, and the inner ends thereof enlarged, as at 61. In each of these punchreceiving holes a punch 68 is inserted from the inner side of the plate, and each punch has an enlargement or head 69 at its inner end which is entered in the enlarged portion 61 of the punch hole. These punches are shown of cylindrical formation, but may have any other desired shape vin cross section, and the heads 69 0f the punches may also be cylindrical or they may be formed non-cylindrical, depending on the security desired to prevent rotation of the punches within their heads. These punches may be cylinn drical throughout and may have a driven fitl within the punch head, but in all cases the heads of these punches bear against the outer end of' the body portion of the plunger, as clearly shown in Fig. 12, so that the thrust, when forcing the punches through sheet metal or the like, will be received directly by said body portion.
In Fig. 13 the plunger is shown of cylindrical form, or at least that end thereof to which the punches are to be secured is so formed, to permit of applying thereto a plunger cap 1i! socketed and internally threaded to receive the outer ends .of theplunger. Through this cap the punches 68 are passed, they being retained in place in the same manner as described with reference to the punches illustrated in Figs. 11 and l2. It is of course understood that when using a plunger of the type shown in Figs. 1l to 13, the stripper piece or head is correspondingly formed to permit all the punches to pass therethrough and through .any material interposed between the punch and die parts of the device.
The motion-transferring or changing elementA slred, end plates 1| may be applied to opposite sides of the housing, and these are secured to the housing by means of screws 12. Ordinarily we prefer to dispense with these end plates.
Having described our invention, what We claim is:
1 A rim or ange perforating or punching device adapted to be placed within a press or a die-set having a ram and bed movable relatively in a given plane, a punch and die-couple positioned between said ram and bed and whose members are relatively movable at an angle to said given plane, a rectilinearly movable actuator adapted to be moved by a part of the press or die-set, and a cylindrical rotatable converter having peripheral engaging-means engaged and operated by said actuator and transferring movement from said actuator to one of the parts of said punch and die-couple.
2. In a device for punching holes in a rim or ange of a part having said rim or flange positioned vertically in a press or a die-set placed within a press, a punch and die-couple whose axis is horizontally disposed and which is supported on the bed of the press or die-set and has the rim to be punched between the punch and die of said punch and die-couple, a vertically movable actuator adapted to be engaged by the ram of the press or die-set, a cylindrical rotatable element peripheral engaging-means engaged and rotated by said actuator and additional peripheral engaging-means circumferentially spaced from said first-mentioned engagingmeans, and a horizontally movable element engaged by the additional engaging-means of said cylindrical rotatable element to cause movement of said horizontally movable element, the latter having the punch of said die-couple removably attached thereto so as to force the same through said rim or flange upon actuation of said actuator,
3. A perorating device adapted to be placed Within a press or a die-set having a ram and bed movable relatively in a given plane, comprising va punch and die-couple supported on said bed and whose axis is disposed at an angle to said plane and between the members of which the article to be punched is placed, an actuating rod adapted to be actuated under relative movement of said bed and ram, a rotatable element having spacedapart shoulders, one of which is engaged by said actuating rod, a plunger movable at an angle to said actuating rod and engaged by the other shoulder of said rotatable element, and means to normally retain said actuator rod,'rotatable element and plunger in normal position, one member of said die-couple being carried by said plunger.
4. A perforating device adapted to be placed within a press or a die-set having a ram and bed movable relatively in a given plane, comprising a housing supported by said bed, a cylindrical rotatable element within said housing, an actuator rod longitudinally slidable in said hous' ing peripherally engaging said rotatable element to act-nate the same and adapted to be actuated under movement of said ram, a plunger longitudinally movable at an angle to said actuator rod and peripherally engaged by said cylindrical rotatable element so as to be actuated under rotation thereof, a punch projecting from said plunger,` a stripper through which 'said' punch is adapted to be passed, and a die retainer also supported on said bed and having a die therein adapted for co-action with said punch.
5. In a perforating device adapted to be place within a press or a die-set having a ram movable toward and from said bed, a housing supported by Vsaid bed, an actuator rod vertically movable in said housing and adapted to be actuated by said ram, a rotatable element peripherally notched to form spaced-apart shoulders,- one of which is engaged by said actuator rod, a plunger horizontally movable in said housing and engaged by the other shoulder of said rotatable element,
. means to retain said actuator rod, rotatable element and plunger in normal position, a stripper at one end of said housing, a punch axially and removably applied to said plunger and designed to be projected through said stripper, a die retainer also supported by said bed and separated from said stripper and said punch by an intervening space, and a die applied to said die retainerand having its axis coincident with that of said punch.
6. In a perforatingdevice adapted to be placed within a press or a die-set having a bed and a ram movable toward and from said bed, a housing supported by said bed, an actuator rod vertically movable in said housing and adapted to be actuated by said ram, a rotatable element peripherally notched to form spaced-apart shoulders, one of which is engaged by said actuator rod, a plunger horizontally movable in said housing and engaged by the other shoulder of saidv rotatable element, a plunger rod extending from one end of said plunger out of said housing, a collar adjustable on said plunger rod, a spring surrounding said plunger rod and bearing at one end against said housing and at its other end against said collar, a punch projecting from the opposite end of said plunger, and a die co-operating with said punch and supported by said bed.

In a perforating device adapted to be placed within a press or a die-set having a bed and a ram movable toward and from said bed, a housing supported by said bed, a cylindrical actuator rod vertically movable in said housing and adapted to be actuated by said ram, a rotatable element peripherally notched to form substantially radially-disposed shoulder walls and having the remaining walls of the notches parti-circular, said actuator rod having its lower end cut away to form a downwardly-facing shoulder engaging the shoulder wall of one of said notches and hav-K ing the region of said rod directly above said shoulder entered into said last-mentioned notch,v
a cylindrical plunger horizontally movable in said housing and having a -notch therein forming a shoulder engaging the shoulder Wall of the otherf notch of said rotatable element, that portion Vof the plunger adjacent the shoulder thereof being entered in the last-mentioned notch of said rotatable element and the punch of said punch and of pressure from said ram.
