Description

(N0 Model.)
E FOSBURLHCI 234,016. 11d s C@Triage Patented No UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHILDS CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,016, dated November 2, 1880. Application tiled May 27, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom 'it 'may concern Be it known that I, CALVIN E. FosBURGH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ohildrens Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide in a convenient manner for supporting a child in an inclined or longitudinal position in a childs carriage Without the necessity of removing the seat from the carriage-body and placing a pillow therein, as is commonly done. Another object of the invention is to provide a cool resting-surface with provision for ventilation below the same.
My invention consists in the combination, with a rigid carriage-body, of a false bottom wor rest arranged above the seat, and devices for securing the false bottom or rest, at any or all of its edges, to thecarriage-body, and which afford provision for adjusting the false bottom or rest upward above and away from the seat, to constitute a support for the child in a recumbent position and alford ventilation below it, and for adjusting said false bottom or rest downward toward and to the seat, to allow of the support of the child upon the seat. The false bottom or rest is preferably composed of some flexible textile material, such as cloth or netting, and when made of such material it affords provision for ventilation similar to a hammock, and readily adapts itself to the contour of the childs body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of a carriagebody and my false bottom or rest attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of -the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a rigid carriage-body, which is of common shape and ordinary construction, and B designates the false bottom or rest thereof. Ihe false bottom is of a size to iit within the carriage-body, and is to be secured thereto by any desired means at each end, and preferably, also, at the two sides. Any devices may be employed for this purpose. As here shown, the body is provided with a rail, G,
around its back and front, and the bottom or rest is furnished with straps b at the front and back ends, adapted to be attached and secured to the rail by buckles, clasps, or otherwise. The rail G, or other devices used in lieu of it, may be made higher or lower, to suit the taste of the manufacturer. The false bottom or rest is also preferably furnished with similar straps c upon the sides, which may be attached to the sides of the carriage-body and prevent the false bottom or rest from swinging sidewise.
The false bottom or rest is designed to be composed of a reticulated or open fabric and preferably of a flexible material-such, for instance, as netting-as when so made it affords provision for ventilation to keep the child cool, and also adapts itself readily to the contour of the childs body, affording the greatest comfort. Provision is afforded for raising or lowering one or both ends of the false bottom or rest, so as to support the child in an inclined or horizontal position above the seat. As here shown, this may be accomplished by lengthening or shortening the end straps, b, separately; or the said straps might be connected to the body, so that those at each end could be lengthened or shortened together-as, for instance, by attaching them to a roller or windlass secured to the carriage-body.
When it is desired to seat the child'upon the carriage-seat, the straps or devices supporting the false bottom or rest are all to be loosened, so as to permit the false bottom or rest to drop to the bottoni of the carriage-body.
When it is desired to raise the child above the seat and support it upon the false bottom or rest, the said bottom or rest is drawn up by the straps or devices at one or both ends, so
as to raise the child into an inclined position and support it as in a hammock; and this may be done without removing the child or disturbing it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a rigid carriage- 9 body, of a false bottom or rest arranged above the seat, and devices for securing the false bottom or rest, at any or all of its edges, to the carriage-body, and which afford provision for adjusting the false bottom or rest upward above and a-Way from the seat, to constitute a support for the child in :i recnmbent position and afford ventilation below it, and for adjusting said false bottom or rest downward toward and to 5 the seat, to allow of the support of the child upon the seat, substantially as specied..
2. The combination, with a rigid carriagebody, of a falso bottom or rest similar to a hammock composed of flexible material arranged above the seat, and devices for securro ing it, ntany or all of the edges, to the car- 1iage-body, substantially as specified.
