Description
Patented Jan. 18, 1944 NETE STATES TENT OFFICE CHICK BOX Abraham Berg Thorup, Salt Lake City, Utah Application February 1, 1943, ySerial No. 474,399
3 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in boxes especially adapted for the shipping of chicks and has for its primary purpose the provision of an improved box of the character indicated which is of simple construction and eiiicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box of the character indicated provided with simple and eicient means for spacing it from an adjacent box to afford air and ventilation for the enclosed chicks.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
rIfhe invention consists of the combinations and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood-by reference to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification and in which Fig. 1 is an enlarged transverse section taken substantially on line I-I of Fig. 2, and illustrating one of a plurality of spacing cleats employed in the construction;
Fig. 2, a partial plan View of the cleat attached to the cover;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the cleats are made; and
Fig. 4, a detailed perspective View illustrating a portion of one of the cleats in place on the top or cover of the box.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises a blank of corrugated paper board, cardboard, or the like, which is provided with a central score line I and side score line Il extending longitudinally of said strip as shown in Fig. 3, and whereby said strip may be bent into substantially M-shape as indicated in Fig. 1. By this arrangement it will be observed that the cleat thus formed may be secured to the top I2 of a chick box with the central apex I3 and the side edges Hi thereof making parallel line contacts with the top of the box and with the ridges l5 exposed for contact with the bottom of a box placed over the rst mentioned box, and whereby a suitable Ventilating space will be provided between said boxes and at the same time Ithe cover of the lower box is reinforced to withstand the weight of the superimposed box, Tongues IS are cut as shown from the sides of the blank so as to be integral therewith and insertable through slots Il provided in the box cover for the purpose and when the cleat is spread into its M-shape, will diverge from each other in divergent planes as indicated, thereby securely locking the cleat in place. The edges I4 of each cleat are provided with locking tongues I 8 adapted and arranged to be inserted through slots I9 in the box cover and whereby the tongues I6 will be prevented from being removed from the slots Vl, thus affording a ysecure lock for the cleat to the top of the box. As will be noted, the outersides of the cleats Ill and Il are arranged vertically with reference to the top of the box to which they are attached, and whereby they are connected by triangular bracing, eliminating any possible sway or later deflection when under strain. This insures proper support for a superimposed box, and thus provides suitable ventilation. In case one of the sides of the cleat should accidentally become detached, the center tongue locks the same, even more securely through greater expansion, The locking arrangement for the cleat also permits extending it beyond the edges of the cleat becoming detached from the box. In this way, cleats are provided which may be readily applied to the tops of the chick boxes,
and which will be strong, durable and eflicient in use.
The specific form and arrangement of parts constitutes a simple and eiective one for the purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying the invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish 4to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. 'I'he combination with a box having a cleat substantially M-shaped in cross section and formed from a single blank of flexible material scored for bending along a longitudinal center and twoY longitudinal lines intermediate of the sides thereof; and securing means as provided at the center portion and the side edges of said blank.
2. The construction speciedy in claim l, in which the securing means are in the form of tongues cut from the blank in the central portion and side edges thereof, there being corresponding slits in the box wall to receive said tongues.
3. The construction specified in claim l, in which the securing means are in the form of tongues cut from the blank at the central portion and side edges thereof, there being corresponding slots in the box wall to receive said tongues, and the central tongues being integral with the sides of the blank but cut from opposite ABRAHAM BERG 'II-IORUP,
