Or, as shown in Fig. 4. a roll I may be used as a couch roll mounted over a paper web-forming mould cylinder III of a paper making machine provided with a felt II travellingv over the cylinder. the upper roll contacting with the felt to exert a regulatable pressure on the felt having a web of paper on the under surface thereof, whereby water is extracted therefrom and the paper web caused to leave the web forming sur` face and to adhere iirxniy to the underside of the said felt which may travel onward to similar umts, the paper web from each adhering to the preceding web.
A roll I constructed as described and as shown in Fig. 5, may also be employed as'the top roll in combination with a lower suction roll I2 provided with a. rubber convering I3 according to the specification of my British Letters Patent No. 457,858. The rolls I and I2 would be oset so that felts I4 and I5 with paper I6 between packing l* containing slots Ib.
The theory of this invention, namely, restricted passages through which water and air pass at lrigh velocity. being understood, various modified constructions may be employed `without departcommunication between the chamber and interior of the vsuction-box, for instance as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, in which the lower chamber comprises two compartments 4*. 4" separated by Some of such constructions may be provided with regulating means to denne the net opening of the passages.
Top and bottom rolls are described. It is to be understood however that the rolls may be arranged in any relation wherein the suction box of this invention lies below the contacting line vwith its co-acting roll, should the rolls coact with their axes on a horizontal plane. A suction roll as described may be used without a coacting roll,

What I claim is:
1. A hollow cylindrical suction press roll, a stationary suction box within the roll and near the lower part of said roll having parallel longitudinal sealing walls and sealing heads at the ends or the walls. said walls Vandv heads contacting with the lower part'ot the inner surface of the roll o and forming a small capacity receiving chamber,

The arc over the suction box I'I of the lower roll I2 at theapproach side is not fully covered by the felts so that a large volume of air at low pressure can be drawn into the said lower suction box through the shell perforations with the water flowing from the bite of the two rolls onto the arc of the lower roll which is in communication with the lower suction box, in such manner that gravity, assisted bythe induced air pressure, quickly removes the water from the lower perforated roll surfacel as described in the specification of my said British Letters Patent No.,
457,858. In that invention the felts should run' an upstanding longitudinal rib above said chamber with its top above an adjacent portion of the suction box, said rib being provided with longitudinally spaced restricted passages from the chamber through which water and air can be raised through the top of said rib into the suction box.

A suction roll press assembly wherein a suction roll according to claim 1 is mounted over a lower suction preasroll between which two felts with a web oi' paper between them may be passed in contact with an arc of the upper press roll corresponding to the overall width of its suction box chamber, the chamber of said upper roll being positioned on the approach side of a plane through the bite and wherein the arc over the suction box of the lower roll at the approach side of a plane through the bite is not fully covered by the felts.
3. A suction press roll provided internally with a stationary suction box within the roll and near the lower part of said' roll having along its lower edge a small capacity receiving chamber between parallel longitudinal sealing walls or packlngs contacting 'with the lower part of the inner wall of theshell, the ends of the chamber beingsealed by,..h'eads which also contact with the shell, the
,b'ox being also provided with a raised portion or 'portions arranged longitudinalLv of the interior of the suction box above said chamber and provided with adiustable passages from the top of the raised portion or portions to the chamber. through which lwater and air can be raised. and a removable cover for the suction box whereby access to said pasages may be had.
4. A suction press roll according to claim 1.
wherein the passages connecting the chamber and interior of the suction box are restricted by the insertion of tubes therein.
5. A suction press assembly wherein a suction roll according to claim 1 is mounted over a lower suction press roii between which two felts with a web oi' paper between them may be passed in contact with an arc of the upper press roll corresponding to the overall width of its suction box chamber, the chamber of the upper roll being 10 positioned on the approach side of a piane through the bite.
