Description

Jan. 4, 1944. N. c. coATEs MOUNTING AND GUARD FOR ROTARY CUTTERS Filed Sept. 11, 1941 INVENTOR,
ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 4, 1944 UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE momma AND cum won some! Neligh onu- Coates, new City. Mo. Application September 11, 1041. Serial No. 410.410
- 2 Claims. (01. 51-92) This invention relates to improvements in a mounting and guard for rotary cutters and has particular reference to a cutting machine suitable for cuttling tile, stone, etc.
This type of cutting machine having a rotary cutter adapted to be oscillated about a horizontal axis for positioning relative to the various articles being cut is best shown in its entirety in my Letters Patent #2,l71,024.
In this type of cutting machine much difllculty has been experienced in properly controlling the cuttings and also in protecting the operator against flying particles when the saw is moved to certain of the various vertical positions during the cutting operations.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a cutting machine wherein the rotary cutting blade is provided with a streamlined guard which insures greater safety and efflciency.
Another object is the provision of a mounting and guard for oscillatable rotary cutters wherein the guard is provided with an adjustable front extension. 7
Other objects are simplicity and sturdiness of construction, efficiency of operation and adjustability of the guard to proper function when the cutting blade is positioned at various heighths relative to the operator.
With these objects, in view, reference will now be had to the drawing wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of the upper portion of a cutting machine showing a mounting and shield for a rotary cutter embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shownin Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detached front elevational view of the platform and associated parts.
Fig. 5 is an inverted fragmentary view showing I the cutting blade and blade guard.
Throughout the several views like reference characters refer to similar parts and the numeral ll designates a base of substantially rectangular form supported on front legs I! and rear standards l4 and I 8. Standards l4 and I6 extend above base it and are each provided with corresponding notches l8. Base II is provided with I side rail 20 having upturned flanges 22 which serve as tracks on which the flanged wheels 24 of carriage 28 are adapted to run.
The carriage 26 is adapted to support the article 28 such as tile, stone, etc., to be cut. The movement of the carriage It on tracks :2 is in a direction parallel with the plane of the cutting blade. Carriage 20 is provided with a stop flange 3| against which the article may be positioned.
A rotary blade mounting 32 comprises an elongated platform 34. The platform is provided intermediate its ends with a pivot member a which extends beyond each side thereof and is provided at each of its opposite end portions with an annular groove 36. These grooves 38 are so spaced apart as to register with the respective notches II in the spaced apart standards it and it.
Mounted on the rear end of platform 34 is a motor 40 of any suitable type having a drive shaft 42 on which is mounted a drive pulley 44. The forward end portion 46 of platform 34 is provided with a shaft 48 rotatably mounted in bearings 80. This shaft is in parallel relation with the axis of the motor and is provided at its one end with a drive pulley 52 which is in alignment with pulley 44 and is operatively connected therewith by means of an endless belt 54. A shield I carried by platform 34 serves to guard the belt 54 and contemplated, however, it is quite apparent that any of the various types of cutting blades might be substituted therefore without deviating from the spirit of this invention.
The platform 32 and the parts carried thereby are so distributed as to substantially balance in the horizontal position shown, and is adapted to be operated by means of the connecting link il pivoted thereto and operated in any suitable manner such as disclosed in my Letters Patent #2,l7l,024.
The cutting blade guard comprising a housing 62 of substantially triangular shape carried by platform 38 is adapted to extend over the upper portion of cutting blade 86.
. It will be noted that the outer extremity of housing 62 is relatively wide to receive the cutting blade 5 and while the rear end portion which terminates adjacent pivot member II is tapered rearwardly and terminated in an acute angle. The lower extremity of housing 62 is usually maintained in a substantially horizontal position but will vary slightly therefrom in certain cutting operations. The recess 84 formed in the housing conforms to the shape of the housing and is confront end of the guard 00, thus avoiding a very having spaced apart standards, an elongated frame pivoted intennediate its ends for vertical osciilatim on said standards, a circular cutting blade mounted for rotation on the front end portionofsaidframeatadistancegreaterthanths diameterofsaidbladafrom-thepivotal pointof said frame, a material carriage mounted for reciprocation on said base below said cutting blade.
means for driving said blade including a motor objectionable feature of the old type of guard wheretheguardwallisdisposedsubstantially concentric with the blade. 1
As the platform It is raised for oscillation in the higher notches I. it is desirable to have the guard extended lower at its front end, and for In adjusting the guard extension 00 the operator loosens nut ll. adiusts ",then sets nut II to secure the parts in fixed relation.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a convenient and sate circular blade cutting device with a streamline guard, of variable effective length, to control the direction of travel of the cutting and to insure safety of the operator should the cutting blade break.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described a base carried by the rear end portion of said frame, a guard comprising an inverted trough-like member adapted to encompass substantially the upper half oi. said circular blade and having its lower edge terminating on a straisht line substantially joining the center of said blade and the pivotal point of said frame, the upper contour of said guard being circular at its front portion-and terminating at its rear portion in an acute angle substantially at the pivoted point of said frame.
2. In a device of the character described a base having spaced apart standards, an elongated frame pivoted intermediate its ends for vertical oscillation on said'standards, a circular cutting blade mounted for rotation on the front end portion of said frame at a distance greater than the diameter of said blade from the pivotal point of said frame, a material carriage mounted for reciprocation on said base below said cutting blade,
means for driving said blade including a motor carried by the rear end portion of said frame, a guard comprising an inverted trough-like member adapted to encompass substantially the upper half of said circular blade and having its lower edge terminating on a substantially straight line substantially joining the center of said blade and the pivotal point of said frame, the upper contour of said guard being circular at its front portion and terminating at its rear portion in an acute angle substantially at the pivoted point of said frame, and an adjustable extension carried by said guard for positioning below said guard adjacent the periphery of said blade.
