6 Claims.

This invention relates to an improved carton formed from cardboard or other suitable material.

Among the objects of this invention is the provision of a carton which may be used, not only as-a container, but which may easily be converted for display purposes; and the provision of a carton which is formed of a one-piece blank with very little waste of material. Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises the elements and combinations of elements, features of construction, and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the structures hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

The carton blank illustrated in Fig. 1 is formed ofcardboard or other suitable material cut and scored substantially as shown. It comprises bottom portions I, 2, 3 and 4 separated by

5, 6, I, 8 and 9 are arranged in a straight line which is parallel to the line of portions I-4. The blank also comprises a top It) with an attached fold portion or web II, 41, t9 contiguous to the side 5 and end I.

Tongues I2 and I3 are formed in one bottom portion for forming a closure with cuts I4 and I5. The side and end portions 5, I, 6 and 8 are continuous and have suitable score lines between them. The bottom portions I, 2, 3 and 4 meattached respectively to side 5, end 1, side 6 and end 8 by means of a score line 43. The score line 44 is moved next to score line 45, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4 (see also Fig. '7). Where additional rigidity is desired, the tab 24 may be pasted to the back I.

The top ID is-utilized in the position shown in Fig. 4 (that is, not folded along the score lines I! and I8) when the device is used for transporting articles or for general use as a container. The top, when utilized thus, is shown in Fig. 7 and in dotted lines in Fig. 6.

When use for display purposes is desired, the

, top portion 29 is merely bent along fold lines I! and I8 so that the rounded portion 21 projects upward from the plane of part 29. The flap 28 is at this time straightened out so as also to be parallel with the portion 29 and is placed aginst the inside of the rear portion I. The box therefore assumes the Fig. 5 position. Thus it will be seen that the top I i is breakable or collapsible at I6, I1, I8 to bend down part 29.

The blank for forming the carton described above may be formed economically from cardboard or other stock and only a very small proportion of cardboard is lost in the cutting operation. This is partly because the top I!) lies parallel to the side 6. There are substantially no wasteful projecting parts. The result is a decreased cost of manufacture. Moreover, the box may be folded and pasted to the Fig. 2 position and large numbers may be transported flat to the user. A large number of carton blanks can be transported or stored in the Fig. 2 condition flat, and easily assembled when desired for use as containers. The user can then easily assemble as a box, without any cutting or pasting operations, if desired.

The end portion 8 which forms the front of the box is preferably formed with a recess 30 cut therein which permits easy removal of the flap 28 where the flap is inserted inside the front end 8. In addition, it aids in the easy removal of the articles contained therein.

The triangular portion or web 49 which joins part 2-7 to part 5 at score lines 5| and 53 being turned down in proceeding from the positions between Figs. 3 and 4, serves, particularly in the display position of Fig. 5, to hold the part: 47 against the back I. As above stated, the additional pasting of the tongue 24 to said back 1 may be employed after the parts are folded. up as a box, but this is not absolutely necessary.

Recapitulating, the invention consists in portions or panels cut and scored to form. a box'open at the top, wherein the back end has an extension horizontally hinged thereto, said extension including a breakable or collapsible top perpendicularly hinged thereto, with an angular hinge in the extension intersecting or meeting the junction of the horizontal and perpendicular hinges to permit of the extension being turned down against the back while the perpendicular hinge moves adjacent to the horizontal hinge; whereby when the top is opened and set to collapsed position it forms a display from the back of the open box. In addition, there is a brace hinged between the extension and one side of the box which acts to hold the extension against the back after assembly.

Advertising matter carried upon the portion 29 of the top i6 is readable from the front of the box either in its box-closed position or its boxopen position. For convenience in the drawing, the advertising matter is indicated by the characters A, B, C.

In View of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.

As many changes could be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

I claim:

1-. In a folding box formed of side, end, and bottom portions cut and hinged to form a box open at the top, an extension from one of said ends hinged thereto, a top joined to said hinged extension and hinged thereto perpendicularly to said extension hinge, an angular score line in said extension arranged to meet the junction of said hinges to allow movement of said perpendicular score line against the top edge of'said end, said top being provided with means for angling one portion back against another portion when the top is open thereby to form an upright display.

2. In a folding box formed from a one-piece blank out and scored to form side, end, and bottom portions to form a box open at the top, an extension from one of said ends hinged horizontally, a triangular web joining the extension and one side, a top hinged to said hinged extension perpendicularly to said horizontal hinge, an angular score line in said extension arranged to meet the junction of said hinges to allow of bringing said perpendicular score line against the horizontal score line, said top being provided with means for angling one portion back against another portion when the top is open thereby to form a display, said web holding said another portion of said top against the back of the box.

In a folding box formed from a one-piece blank cut and scored to form side, end, and bottom portions to form a box open at the top, an extension from one of said ends hinged horizontally, a triangular web joining the extension and one side, a top hinged to said hinged extension perpendicularly to said horizontal hinge, an angular score line in said extension arranged to meet the junction of said hinges to allow of bringing said perpendicular score line against the horizontal score line, said top being provided with means for angling one portion back against another portion when the top is open thereby to form a display, said web holding said another portion of said top against the back of the box, and a tongue extending from said angular score line for attachment to the adjacent box end.

In a folding box formed. from a one-piece blank, side, front end, back. end, and bottom portions cut and scored to form a box open at the top, an extension hinged horizontally on the top of said back end for angling down against the inside of said back end, a web joining the extension and one side by score lines permitting said angling down of the extension, said web acting as a brace holding the extension in place after assembly, a top forming an extension from said hinged extension and hinged thereto vertically, an angular score line in said extension joining the vertical and horizontal hinges where they cross and arranged to allow of bringing said vertical score line against the top edge of said end, said top being provded with means for angling one portion back against another portion when the top is opened thereby to form a a vertical display in the plane of said back end.

An article of manufacture comprising a one-piece blank cut and scored for folding to form a box open at the top having an end, an extension hinged to said end by a horizontal score line, said extension including a top hinged thereto on a score line normal to the horizontal score line whereby top material is located adjacently to side material in the blank, and an an-- gular score line in the extension intersecting the junction of said hinges and permitting of its being turned down against said end to permit movement of the normal score line against the horizontal score line.

6. An article of manufacture comprising a one-piece blank cut and scored for folding to form a box open at the tophaving an end, an extension horizontally hinged to said end by a score line, said extension including a top perpendicularly hinged thereto on a score line intersecting said horizontal score line, whereby top material is located adjacently to side material in the blank, and an angular score line in the extension intersecting the junction of said hinges and permitting of its being turned down against said end to permit movement of the extension against the inside of said end.
