Bogota, N. J., assignor to A.
Kimball Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Applica-ticniugust 28, 1940, Serial No. 354,466
(Cl. .9S-89) 4 Claims.
This invention relates to marking machines.
In Marsh application, Serial No. 354,481, filed of even date herewith, a pin ticket roll is described which comprises an elongated strip formed of a large number of individual tickets. In such strips the wire staples are passed loosely through the individual tickets without clinching the same to the tickets as is the usual practice. Since the staples are merely loosely hung in the tickets, the legs or pins of the staples may be readily swung to a position substantially parallel to the plane of the ticket, so that the strip may be wound into a flat roll, the successive convolutions of which are closely spaced.
It is desirable, however, in most cases, that the staples be clinched to the ticket before attaching the ticket to the merchandise. It is an object of the present invention to provide a marking machine having a mechanism, operating in cooperation with the feeding and printing mechanisms of such machines, to clinch such loosely held staples firmly to the tickets.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shownl in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the parts in clinching position.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan View, partly in section, showing the pin guide.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, showing the clinching mechanism, the position of the parts corresponding to that shown in Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a similar view, the position of the parts corresponding to that shown in Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, the clinching mechanism is illustrated as embodied in a marking machine of the general type disclosed in Laencher Patent No. 1,837,450, to which reference may be had for a description of suitable feed mechanism, printing and inking mechanism, etc.
In such machines the main drive shaft 22 carries a feed cam 6B which operates a lever 57 to reciprocate the feed pawl 37. The feed pawl engages the slits formed between successive tickets and advances the strip intermittently, one ticket length at a time.
Mounted on the main drive shaft 22 of the machine are two cams I and 2, the cam I being utilized to operate a presser foot or clamp 3, and
the cam 2 being utilized to operate the clinching mechanism, designated generally by, numeral 4.
The presser foot 3 is carried on a plunger 5 which is mounted to slide inhousing 6. The other end of the plunger carries a head 7 which engagesthe forked arm 8 of abell crank pivoted at 9, the other armv I0 being provided with a roller I I Whichrides on the cam I. A spring I2 mounted in the housing 6 and surrounding the plunger 5 urges the presser foot and plunger downward, holding the head 7 in engagement with the lever arm 8, and holding the roller II against the cam.
The clinching mechanism comprises a housing I having a pair of diagonally disposed guideways I6, I6 therein which receive and guide the clincher members I7, I7'. The said clincher members are actuated by plunger I 8 which slides in vertical guideway I9, the plunger being provided with a ange 2i! which engages slots 2i, 2l in the lower ends of the clincher members.
Mounted in the plunger I 8 is an anvil 23 which engages the under side of the ticket being clinched and serves as a surface against which pins to clinched position. The said anvil is spring-pressed, the plunger I 8.
The lower end of the plunger IB is slotted to receive the forked end of lever 25 by which it is actuated. Lever 25 is pivoted at 26 and carries a roller 27 which engages the cam 2.
As set forth in the aforesaid Marsh application,
, unclinched staples may be ex- As shown, the housing 6 and the housing I5 may be secured to or formed integrally with a frame 3| which also supports the pivots 9 and 26.
tionary. The presser foot descends rst, to clamp the ticket iirmly against the upper surfaces of the plates 30, 30'. Then the plunger I8 rises, bringing the anvil against the under surface of the ticket between the pins. Immediately thereafter continued upward movement of the plunger I8 causes the clincher the pins to bend them from the position shown in Figure to the position shown in Figure 6, in which position they are tightly clinched against the ticket.
It will be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a marking machine for feeding and printing pin tickets carrying unclinched, loosely held staples having a pair of parallel pins, a pair of spaced parallel plates arranged perpendicular to the face of said tickets and having a slot therebetween, means to feed said tickets intermittently lengthwise of said slot with said parallel pins extending into the slot, means to guide said pins into the slot between said plates as said tickets are fed forward, and means operating vertically within the slot between said plates to bend said staples at points closely adjacent said ticket to clinch said staples firmly to said ticket, said pins remaining parallel and extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to said ticket.

In a marking machine for Yfeeding and printing pin tickets carrying unclinched, loosely held staples having a pair of parallel pins, a pair of spaced parallel plates arranged perpendicular to the face of said tickets and having a slot therebetween, means to feed said tickets intermittently lengthwise of said slot with said parallel pins extending into the slot, means to guide said pins into the slot between said plates as said tickets are fed forward, and means operating within the slot between said plates to bend said staples at points closely adjacent said ticket to clinch said staples rmly to said ticket, said clinching means comprising an anvil operating vertically between said pins and oppositely disposed clincher members working vertically outside said pins, said anvil serving to restrain said pins in one direction and said plates serving to restrain said pins members l'll, l1 to engage in other directions during the clinching operation, whereby said clinched pins remain parallel and extend in a direction substantially perpendicular to said ticket.

In a marking machine for feeding and printing pin tickets carrying unclinched, loosely held staples having a pair of parallel pins, a pair of spaced parallel plates arranged perpendicular to the face of said tickets and having a slot therebetween, means to feed said tickets intermittently lengthwise of sai-d slot with said parallel pins extending into the slot, and means operating within the slot between said plates to bend said staples at points closely adjacent said ticket to clinch said staples rmly to said ticket, said clinching means comprising an anvil operating vertically between said pins and oppositely disposed clincher members working vertically outside said pins, said anvil serving to restrain said pins in one direction and said plates serving to restrain said pins in other directions during the clinching operation, whereby said clinched pins remain parallel and extend in a direction substantially perpendicular to said ticket.
4. In a marking machine for feeding and printing pin tickets carrying unclinched, loosely held staples having a pair of parallel pins, a pair of spaced parallel plates arranged perpendicular to the face of said tickets and having a slot therebetween, means to feed said tickets intermittently lengthwise of said slot with said parallel pins extending into the slot, means to engage the front face of the ticket to hold the same above said plates, and means operating within the slot between said plates to bend said staples at points closely adjacent said ticket to clinch said staples rmly to said ticket, said clinching means comprising an anvil operating vertically between said pins and oppositely disposed olincher members working vertically against said ticket engaging means and outside said pins, said anvil serving to restrain said pins in one direction and said plates serving to restrain said pins in other directions during the clinching operation, whereby said clinched pins remain parallel and extend in a direction substantially perpendicular to said ticket.
