The invention aims to provide a safety shaver, and a head for a safety shaver,.so constructed that, through the, instrumentality of a lateral extension, a shaving operation may be carried out closely adjacent toor in the human nose, orin Other similarly restricted places.
The invention differs from the many devices used for cutting in or about the nose, in that, in the device forming the subject matter of this application, the instrument is capable of carry.- ing out the usual safety shaver operation, at the same time that the cutting operation is going on in the restricted area.
'Another object of the invention is to supply a device of the class hereinbefore alluded to, in which the extension is an integral part of the head of the shaver. I
' Another object of the invention is to supply a. device of the sort under consideration, in which th extension is removable, novel means being supplied for assembling the extension with a main guard and with a main cutter, the extension comprising a supplemental guard and a supplernental cutter.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein. disclosed, may be made within the scope of Whatis claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 shows; in side elevation, a safety shaver embodying the device forming the subject'matter of this application;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section wherein thehandle of the shaver remains in elevation, parts being broken away;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation;
tion;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation wherein parts are shown in longitudinal sectionj' Figs. 6 and 7 are sections taken respectively on lines 5-6 and 'l-'l of Fig. 5;
Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
In the drawings there is shown a safety shaver comprising an elongated handle I, supplied in one end with a transverse recess 2. The handle I encloses an electric motor (not shown), deriving current "from a conductor 3. The motor operates or includes a shaft 4, provided at its outer end with an eccentric 5. A set screw 6 is Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a modificathreaded into the handle I and is adapted to enter the recess 2. The starting Wheel is indicated at I. f r
The structure which characterizes the present invention may be used with such a handle and associated parts, and the handle and associated parts may form part of the general combination, although the device hereinafter described may be used with a handle differing from that described. 7 A I There is provided a head H, comprising an elongated base 8, shaped to fit in the recess 2 of the handle I and extended transversely of the length of the handle. The base 8 of the head H is supplied with a seat 9, adapted to receive the inner end of the set screw 6, in order to hold the head in the recess 2.
- The base 8 of the head H carries a tubular guard I0, prolonged outwardly beyond one lateral end surface II of the base, to define an extension I2. The extension I2 is disposed approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the handle I. The extension I2 is tapered at its outer end, to any desired extent, as indicated at 25, so as to be readily insertible in the nostril. The head H includes a power actuated cutting mechanism extended substantially across the end of the handle and substantially to the outer end.
of the part I2.
The cutting mechanism includes an elongated tubular member I4, mounted in the guard I0 for longitudinal reciprocation and for a slight rocking movement, the said member projecting into the prolonged portion or extension I2 of the guard I 0.
The movable member I4 and the guard I0 have cooperating parts I5 defining a cutting mechanism extended practically throughout the length of the guard and its prolonged portion.l2.- The movable member-I4 has an opening l6, re-' ceiving the eccentric 5 onthe shaft 4, and, thus motion is imparted to the member I4, relatively to the uard Ill.
The extension I2 and the corresponding part of the movable member I4 are of such length, and of so small transverse dimensions, that the portions of the cutting elements I5 upon them can be used in restricted areas, for example, about or in the human nose, which could not be reached by the portion of the cutting elements which extend substantially across the end of the handle I.
The extension l2 and associated parts may be used alone, in the manner hereinbefore pointed out: or, while the operator is using the cutting parts that extend across the end of the handle I, he may, at the same time, use the cutting parts of the extension I 2, to work in places on the human face that are not readily accessible otherwise. This clearly difierentiates the device hereif desired, a simultaneous cutting operation pro- I duced by the extension l2 and associated parts.
In Figs. 4 to 8, parts hereinbefore described,
have been designated by numerals already used with the sufiix a.
In this form of the invention, theextension lZa is removable. It includes a supplemental guard 26, provided at its inner end witha 'reduced, circumferential flange 21, received in a correspondingly shaped recess 28 in the end of the main guard Illa. In the flange 21 are mounted pins 28, received in bores 39 formed in the guard Hla, the pins and the bores extending longitudinally of the extension l2a and constituting interengaging elements coacting to prevent the supplemental guard 25 from rotating on the main guard lea.
In its lower surface, the supplemental guard V 2 has a longitudinal groove 3| which is intersected by a transverse notch 32 formed in the supplemental guard. A spring latch 33 is located in the groove 3!, the outer end 34 of the latch being secured to the supplemental guard 26. The
outer end 36 of the latch 33 is secured to the supplemental guard 26, the inner end of the latch being supplied with a transverse head 35, extended across the inner end of the flange 2'! and adapted to be received in a keeper recess 36 formed in the main guard a.
The latch 33 and the keeper recess 36 constitutes interengaging parts cooperating to hold the supplemental guard 26 on the main guard Illa. The notch 32 in the supplemental guard 26 gives access to the spring latch 33 so that the latch may be sprung outwardly, to disengage the head 35 from the keeper or recess 36. When this condition exists, the supplemental guard 26 may be removed endwise from the main guard, Ifla.
The numeral 37 marks a supplemental cutting member disposed within the supplemental guard,
26. The flange of the supplemental cutting member 31 is shown at 38 and is received in the recess 39 of the main cutting member I la, the pins carried by the flange 38 appearing at 4B, and the bores in the cutting member Ma appearing at 41. More detailed description seems unneces sary, in view of what has been stated hereinbefore respecting the corresponding parts of the supplemental guard 26 and the main guard Illa.
The longitudinal spring latch 41, constructed like the latch 33, is located in the bore of the supplemental cutting member 31 and has its outer end secured to the supplemental cutting member. The head of the latch 4| cooperates with the cuting member Ma, as hereinbefore described in In order to prosuitable object may be introduced into the opening 42, to disengage the head of the latch 4| from the main cutting member Ma.
The supplemental guard 26 and the supplemental cutting member 31 have cooperating parts 43, duplicating the cutting parts Ma and con-' stituting a continuation thereof.
