Application November 10, 1941, Serial No. 418,565 s claims. rc1. raf-115) The present invention .relates to new an'd'useful improvements in vanchoring devices and vhas particular lreference .to a device for anchoring the studding of p'artitions'and similar wall structures.
An object of the invention is the provision of an anchoring device which may be quickly and easily mounted in anchoring position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an anchoring device having bendable parts which may be readily disposed to grip a stud or the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an anchoring device Which may be arranged in varying positions in accordance with the nature and condition of the wall structure.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an anchoring device of the aforesaid characte! Which is relatively simple and durable in construction and which is highly efficient in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and Iappended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing illustrating a practical adaptation ofthe invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved anchoring device in fully open position,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device with parts thereof bent to engage a wall stud in one arrangement,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the same showing the device in stud engaging assembly,
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the same,
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the device in another stud engaging arrangement,
Figure 6 is a top plan View of the same in association with a Wall stud, and
Figure 7 is a side elevational View of the same.
With reference to the drawing, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, I0 generally designates an anchoring device constructed in accordance with the invention and which may advantageously be formed of sheet metal. In its fully open position, after shaping and prior to its arrangement for stud anchoring, the device is in the form of an elongated mainly flat plate having a center plate section I I of angular L- shaped conguration in plan. From one straight edge of the body section I l extend a pair of complementary elongated end sections I2 and I3 of angular cross section. Each of these end sections embodies a ange I4 having its inner end bent upwardly at the edge of the center section and extending parallel with said center section in a'plane offset and -above `the center; Theiinner 4edges of these `,anges are spaced :apart :to provide `a narrow slot AI5 therebetween. .The outer sides of the end sections I2 and I3 are formed with longitudinally extending right angular flanges I6, projecting upwardly when the device is in a normal horizontal position. The inner ends of these ilanges I6 are formed with a diminishing taper and merge into the corners of the center section. Thus, in cross section the pair of end sections I2 and I3 form a channel shaped contour having a width slightly less than the length of the edge of the center section II with which they are connected.
At the opposite side edge of the section Il are provided similar end sections embodying elongated angle members havin-g their inner ends connected integrally with the section Il, with the section I8 merging into the projecting edge of the center plate opposite the end section I3 and the complementary end section I1 merging into the setback or recessed edge of the center section opposite the end section I2, as clearly shown at Figure l. The horizontal iianges of the end sections are provided with longitudinally elongated fastener receiving apertures I9.
The device I0 is particularly useful for anchoring a support member, as for example the channel shaped studs S of a lath reinforced plaster partition Wall W. The device is constructed to permit of its mounting transversely of the wall as shown at Figure 3 or longitudinally thereof as illustrated at Figure 6 in accordance with the particular nature and structural con-dition of the building in which the wall is to be erected.
In its transverse arrangement the end projecting sections I2 and II are fastened to the flooring by nails or suitable fastening means, as shown to advantage at Figure 3 while the directly opposed end sections I3 and I8 are bent to right angular vertical or upwardly directed positions to embrace opposite corner portions of the stud. These embracing end sections of the anchor are rmly tied to the stud by the usual binding wire B.
Where the building structure is such that it is advantageous to dispose the anchor longitudinally of the partition wall W the projecting end sections I2 and I8 are fastened horizontally to the concrete or other flooring while the diagonally opposed end projections I3 and Il are bent upwardly on their bending edges joining the center section to provide upstanding portions ernbracing diagonally opposed parts of the stud, as
best shown at Figure 6. These stud embracing sections are securely tied to the support member as illustrated at Figure 7.
Thus, the improved anchoring device affords a relatively simple and inexpensive structure for anchoring Wall studding and similar support members with reference to floors or ceilings, providing a device which may be quickly and easily mounted in anchoring position at varying angular positions With reference to the Wall and studs and which will firmly embrace the studs to hold the same in position.
It is to be understood that the invention is not conned to the specific construction, arrangement or use ilustrated and described and that considerable modification may be made therein Within the spirit of the invention asdened bypairs to positions perpendicular to the center section for embracing a wall support member.
2. In an anchoring device, a iiat center section of angular coniiguration, a pair of elongated end sections extending from one straight edge of the center section, a pair of elongated end sections projecting in a direction opposed to the rst mentioned end sections from the angularly oiiset edges of the center section, the said end sections being disposed in parallel spaced apart pairs and having apertures therein for engaging plaster elements and right angular anges formed at the outer edges of the said end sections.
3. In a device of the character described, a center section, and a plurality of end sections having bendable connection with opposed edges of the center section, the said end sections being disposed for bending from positions proximately co-planar with the center section to positions perpendicular thereto, the end sections at one side of the center section having their bendable connections disposed in transversely offset positions whereby the end sections may be arranged to ernbrace members of varying cross sectional contour.
