DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,557, dated October 19, 1880. Application led March 15, 1880. (N o model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN E. SCHMIDT, ot Rapidan, in the county ot' Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification.
The object ot' this invention is to provide a device to be attached to a vehicle for the purpose of equalizing;` the draft of three horses.
The invention consists'ot' several bars or le` vers for carrying the double and single trees, arranged upon the tongue or pole of the vehicle in such a manner that the draft or pull of one horse on the long arm ot' the main lever will equalize the draft or pull of two horses at the short arm thereof.
The drawing represents a plan of the device.
In the drawing, A represents the tongue or pole of a vehicle. B is a long bar or lever, pivoted near one end to the face of the tongue A by spring and bolt a, or other convenient device. This lever B is usually made ot' Wood, is about five feet long, and of the desired strength.
C is a brace, preferably ot' iron, pivoted at one end on the face of the tongue A, near the rear end thereof', as shown atb, said brace C eX- tending` diagonally and laterally forward until about on a horizontal line with the pivots of the bar or lever B, and then having its end turned at an obtuse angle, as shown at d, and extended parallel with the tongue A. Pivoted on this front end of the brace C is the short bar or lever D, which extends inward a little more than half-way over the tongue A, and at right angles thereto. A clevis,j`, connects the extreme end of the short arm of the lever B with this short lever D, near the pivoted end of said lever D, said clevis f serving as a fulcrum to said lever. From the free end ofthe long arm of this lever D depends a clevis, g, that carries a double-tree, E, (shown in dotted lines,) from whose end clevises, h 1L, the single-trees F F (also shown in dotted lines) may be suspended. This clevis g hangs centrally over the face ot' the tongue A, so that the double-tree E may extend equally on either side ot the said tongue.
On the extreme end of the long arm of the lever B is iixed a clevis, m, from which depends a single-tree, G, (shown in dotted lines.)
The brace C prevents an extreme rearward movement of the short arm of the lever D when horses are pulling at the double-tree E or at the single-trees F F, thereto attached, and consequently limits the rearward Inove- Inent of the long arm of the lever B, While the pull of one horse on thelong arm of said lever B, or on the sin gie-tree G, thereto attached, is calculated to hold said lever B at right angles to the tongue A againstthe pull or draft of -two horses at the other end ot' said lever B.
One horse attached to the long arm of the lever B, or two horses attached to the lever D, may draw the vehicle to which the tongue A is attached without disarranging the parts herein shown.
Having),` thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A draft-equalizer constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the long lever B, brace C, and short lever D, with their respective clevises and pivots attached to the vehicle-tongue A, as set forth.
HERMAN E. SCHMIDT.
