The present invention relates to excavating apparatus and more in particular to novel door mechanism like.
Among'the objects of'the present invention is to pro'vide a readily detachable hingeconnection for the door of an excavating implement whereby the'said door will have proper seating relation for dippers, buckets, scrapers or the an excavating implement incorporating structure in accordance with the present invention is shown as comprising a dipper formed with a back 2, a front 4, and interconnecting sides 6 with other members of the implement in closed position under all conditions and irrespective of irregularities and variations in'the castings or other members forming the said excavating implement.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a novel means for hingedly connecting the door of excavating apparatus to provide for the application of said door thereto without expensive machining and finishing, the said hinge connection permitting adjustment of the door with respect to the hinge element or elements so as to provide a suitable closure at all times.
More particularly the present invention comprehends a flexible, pivotal connection for a door for excavating apparatus with the provision of means limiting such pivotal movement, and which means may take the form of cushioning elements for effecting proper seating relation of the door and for limiting its pivotal movement with respect to the hinge elements.
' Another object within the purview of the presentin'vention is] to provide novel means in the form, of abutting elements on the door and one oif"mo re"operating elements for the excavating 4 apparatus, which abutment means may comprise cushioning elements, limiting the door in its movement to open position.

and 8, which may be of conventional design but as shown herein-conform to the disclosure of a copending application for Excavating implements, Serial No. 468,078, filed December 7, 1942.
As is conventional in this type of structure, the front at its upper or cutting edge In, is provided with a plurality, of teeth l2, and the said back is provided'with the lugs, as at l4, adjacent the sides 8 and 8 for connection to a lifting bail it. Also connected to the back 2, as at It, is a dipper stick 2!! which is further connected to the back 2 through the medium of the links 22, pivotally connected as at 24, to the pair of lugs 26 and 28 disposed in spaced relationto one another and formed on the said back 2.
The dipper herein disclosedis further provided with a door or closure member 30 adapted to close the opening formed by thefront, back and side elements hereinbefore referred to, and which door is pivotally connected, as at 36, to the hinge lugs 38 formed on the back member 2, through the medium of hinges .32 and 34 of the offset arm type. The door 30 is further provided with latch mechanism, generally referred to as 40, which holds the doorin locked position and which may be operated to release said door and permit. discharge of material carried by the dipper.
, The present invention in one of its aspects is concerned primarily with a suitable flexible mounting for the door 30 on the arms 32 and 34 to permit seating of the door under all conditions and irrespective of irregularities and variations in the formation and finishing of the front, back and side elements defining the opening for the dipper. Such novel connection is provided-in the present illustration by means of pintles 42 and 44 mounted in lugs or brackets such as46 provided on the faceof the door 30, and which serve as hinge means mounted in the arms "32 and 34 in spaced relation to the free ends thereof. This hinge connection permits relativemovement of the door 30 in respect to the hinge ele- --ments 32 and! and provides for the seating thereof under all conditions.
In order to limit the relative movement of the door with respect to the arms, each of said arms is provided on opposite sides of the hinge connection thereof to the door with the abutment pads'48 and 50 whichfare disposed't'o' engage with the door to limit its relative movement with respect to said arms. While these pads may take any form desired, nevertheless the present illustration discloses the same as being constituted of some resilient compressible material such as rubber or the like, which are secured to the inner face of the arms as by means of a screw or the like, and which are adapted to seat in recesses or sockets 52 provided in opposed relation thereto on the face of the door 30, thus assuring proper seating of the door and to cushion its movement with respect to'the hinge elements,
As a further novel feature of construction, the door 3|] is provided with an abutment flange 54 extending laterally of the same and which is-in position to engage the abutment pads 56 carried by the links 22 at the time that the door 30 reaches its full open position. These pads 56 are preferably mounted in sockets or recesses 58 provided in the links 22 and secured therein by the bolts, screws or the like 60. While the 'said pads may be of anydesired material, the same are preferably of some resilient or compressible material such as rubber or the like, so as to cushion and control the pivotally mounted door as the same is swung into full open position, thus providing a novel arrangement to prevent injury or damage to the parts of the excavating dipper and'its operating elements.
While I have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, itis to be understood that the in-. vention is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is: V
1. In an excavating implement the combination of a front member, a back member and interconnecting side members forming a bottom opening, a closure for said opening, one or more hinge elements for said closure, means for 'hingedly connecting said one or more hinge eletion of a front member, a back member and interconnecting side members forming a bottom opening, a closure for said opening, one or more hinge elements for said closure, means for hingedly connecting said one or more hinge elements adjacent one end thereof to one of said members, means for hingedly connecting said one or more hinge elements intermediate the ends thereof to said closure, and pads disposed on opposite sides of said hinge connection for said closure and arranged between said one or more hinge elements and said closure for limiting the relative movement of said closure with respect to said one or more hinge elements.

In an excavating implement the combination of a front member, a back member and interconnecting side members forming a bottom opening, a closure for said opening, one or more hinge elements for said closure, means for hingedly connecting said one or more hinge elements adjacent one end thereof to, one of said members, means for hingedly connecting said one or more hinge elements intermediate the ends thereof to said closure, and cushioning pads carried by said one or more hinge elements on opposite sides of said hinge connection for said closure and adapted to cooperate therewith to limit relative movement thereof with respect to said one or more hinge elementa' 4. In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member, one or more hinge members for connecting the same to said implement,-a hinge connection between said closure tion of a closure member, one or more hinge members for connecting the same to said implement, a hinge connection between said closure member and said one or more hinge members intermediate the ends of the latter, and cushioning means carried by one of said first or second named members on opposite sides of said connection for limiting relative movement therebetween.
6. In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member hinged to said implement, operating means for said implement, one or more link members connecting said means to said implement, and means on said closure and said one or more link members adapted to cooperate for limiting movement of said closure member.
'7 In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member hinged to said implement, operating means for said implement, one or more link members connecting said means to said implement, and cushioning means on said closure and said one or more link members adapted to cooperate for limiting movement of said closure member.
8. In an excavating implement, the combination of a. closure member hinged to said implement, operating means for said implement, one or more, link members connecting said means to said implement, said closure member being provided with a flange, and means carried by said one or more link members adapted to engage with said flange for limiting movement of said closure member.
. 9. In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member hinged to said implement, a dipper stick connected to said implement, one or more link members connecting said implement and said dipper stick, said closure member being provided with a flange, each of said one or more link members having arecess, and a cushioning member carried in said recess to cooperate with said flange for limiting movement of said closure member.
10. In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member, one or more hinge members for connecting the same to said implement, a hinge connection between said closure member and said one or more hinge members intermediate the ends of the latter, abutment means between said closure member and said one or more hinge members, a dipper stick connected to said implement, one or more link members connecting said implement and said dipper stick, said closure member having a flange, and abutment means carried by said one or more link members engageable with the flange of said ment in open position.
11. In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member, one or more hinge members for connecting the same to said implement, a dipper stick connected to said implement,
one or more link members connecting said implement and said dipper stick, and abutment means carried by said one or more link members engageable with'said hingedly connected door for limiting its movement in open position,

In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member, one or more hinge members for connecting the same to said implement, a dipper stick connected to said implement, one or more link members connecting said implement and said dipper stick, said closure member having an abutment, and abutment means carried by said one or more link members engageable with the abutment'of said hingedly connected door for limiting its movement in open position.
13. In an excavating implement, the combination of a closure member, one or more hinge members for connecting the same to said implement, a hinge connection between said closure member and said one or more hingemembers intermediate the ends of the latter, abutment means between said closure member and said one or more hinge members, a dipper stick connected to said implement, one or more link members connecting said implement and said dipper stick, said closure member having laterally extending abutment means, and abutment means carried by said one or more link members engageable with said laterally extending abutment means of said hingedly connected door for limiting its movementin open position.
