LIVESTOCK FEEDER Filed May 5, 1943 INVENTORI CLARE NCE E. HEDHIC'K Bra/5, /Z
Patented Nov. 30, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIVESTOCK FEEDER Clarence E. Hedrick, Newton, Kans.
Application May 5, 1943, Serial No. 485,731
1 Claim. (01. 119--54) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in live stock feeders and more particularly to the feeding of hogs. Attention is now directed to the fact that improvements herein disclosed were not involved in my former patent on a feeder, issued June 18, 1935, and bearing No. 2,005,188. The said improvements herein disclosed consist,
First, of an oscillatable cylindrical food container pendantly carried by chains or other flexing elements to selectively space the lower extremity of the container from the bottom of the base;
Second, the said base bottom being two-ply wood, the grain of which is transversely assembled, oil treated and secured together;
Third, the feed trough partitions being turned to intersect the longitudinal center of their respective sides of a polygonal outer wall of the troughs to eliminate acute angles where the walls of the troughs join, and being so assembled, the angles of the sides will extend outward, providing more room to the advantage of livestock while feeding on the substance contained in the troughs; and
Fourth, the bottom of the base, being so treated, as above stated, is means 'to eliminate the metal lining as provided in my said former patent.
The said improvements being the principal objects of this application will hereinafter be more fully explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters will apply to like parts in the different views thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the feeder, parts removed for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 33 in Fig. 2.
As a more concise description of the drawing, it will be seen that the structure consists of a base comprised of a bottom I constructed of twoply wood material A and B respectively as shown in Fig. 3, said plies being oil treated to render the same impervious to moisture, the plies being transversely assembled and secured together by screws or the like, the contour of the bottom being polygonal in form, and having a vertically disposed wall 2 peripherally secured thereto and extending upwardly therefrom to function as outer walls for a plurality of feed troughs radially extending from the center of said bottom, the troughs being formed by partition walls 3 radially positioned in spaced relation and seating edgewise on the bottom with their outer ends abutting said outer walls and being secured to the longitudinal center of their respective polygonal sides of the said outer end walls of the troughs. The other ends of said partitions terminate equally a spaced distance outwardly from the center of the bottom and each end is secured to an annular band 4 adjacent the upper corners of said partitions, whereby said band is well spaced upward from the bottom, it being understood that the upper edge of the partitions slant upward from their outer ends as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby ample space is providedfor vertical adjustment of a cylindrical feed container 5, the diameter of which is less than that of the band on which it is pendantly carried. Being so arranged will provide ample room for oscillatory movement of the container.
The pendant carrying means consists of chains 1 and hangers 8, said hangers having a hook formed on each end thereof and oppositely turned to engage both annular band and links of the chain selectively with respect to the links, where.- by the lower extremity of the container is spaced selectively from the bottom to control the flow of food substance into the troughs. It will be seen that one end of each chain is secured to the container at its lower extremity while the other ends are engaged by their respective hooks.
Secured to the upper side of the feeder bottom in axial alignment with the container is a conical element 9, the apex of which is positioned above the lower end of said container to serve as an agitator for ground feed contained therein during oscillatory movement thereof. Furthermore, the said conical element being so positioned will function as a deflector for the feed whereby the troughs are well supplied as the stock feeds thereon.
Such modifications may be made as lie within the scope of the appended claim.
Having fully explained my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In live stock feeders, of the class described, a base horizontally disposed and polygonal in contour, a wall vertically extending and being secured to the periphery of the base and following the polygonal sides thereof, a plurality of partitions, there being one for each side of the polygonal wall to form troughs, one end of each partition abutting its respective side wall at the longitudinal center thereof and radially extending inward of the base and secured thereto, the
upper edge of each partition slanting upward and inward from the wall, the inner ends of said partitions terminating a spaced distance outward from the center of the base and vertically disposed, an annular band secured to the said inner ends adjacent their upper extremities, said base having a conical element secured thereto and centrally positioned with respect to the said annular band, a tubular feed container and a plurality of short lengths of chains, one end of each chain being secured to the annular band in spaced relation therearound, the other ends being secured to the lower extremity of the said feed container to permit rocking movement thereof each way from its longitudinal center to equally dispense the feed at the inner ends of the troughs when the feed container is rocked.
