This invention relates to grinding machines, and more particularly to a truingapparatus for truing'the operative .face of a grinding wheel.
, One object of theinvention istoprovide :a simple and thoroughly practical grinding wheel truing apparatuswhich is arranged for truing either a true cylindrical, tapered a; formed face on a grinding wheel. Another object of the invention is to provide a truing apparatus having a freely-movable roller-supported slide for supporting the truing tool. Another object of the invention is to provide a truing apparatus with a cylindrically shaped truing tool slide having a forming bar which passes thorugh an elongated slot in said slide and an adjustable follower axially located within the slide so that the thrust. of the follower relative to the slideis in an axial direction, thereby preventing. cramping of the slideduring a .truing operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a longitudinally andtransversely movable truing tool slide. provide a truing apparatus having a longitudinally movable slide and a transversely movable truing tool slide thereon and a forming bar and a follower arranged so that the thrust of the latter isin an axial direction relative to the truing tool slide. A further object of the invention is to provide a truing apparatus which may be adjustably swivelled to facilitate the truing of a tapered face on will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.

The slide 26 serves as a support for a transversely movable truing tool slide 40. The slide 40 is preferably cylindrical in shape and is preferably supported by a roller support in order to facilitate a free movement of the slide relative to the longitudinallymovable slide 26. Two sets ofspaced supporting rollers are provided, 'each comprising three symmetrically arranged rollers.
The forward end of the slide 40 is supported by a pair of rollers 4| and 42 which are in turn supported on fixed studs 43 and 44, respectively. An upper roller 45 is supported by means of a stud 46. The stud 46 is provided with an eccentric portion 41 by means of which the axis of the roller 45 may be adjusted toward and from the axis of the slide 40 whereby the roller 45% may be roller 50. The support for this set of rollers is identical with the set just previously described.
The lower supporting rollers 48 I and 49 are mounted on fixed studs and the upper roller 50 is adjusted on an eccentric stud to facilitate adjustment of the roller 50 as'desired. It will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure that by adjustment of the rollers 45 and 58,the slide 40 may be freely moved without lost motion therebetween. In order to provide free movement thereof, a roller 55 is mounted on a stud 56 which is fixedly mounted relative to the slide 26. The roller 55 rides against one side face of the guide 44. When it is desired to adjust the position of the eccentric 58, the nut 6| may be loosened and the stud 59 rotated by placing a screw driver in'the slot formed in the upper part' of the 'screw" threaded portion of the stud 59 to position the eccentric 58 and the roller '51. After thedesired adjustment has been made, the nut 61 is then clamped :in position rigidly to maintain the eccentric 58 and the roller 51 in'adjusted position.
By this adjustment of the roller 51, lost motion maybe taken up and the slide held so that it travels freely in a straight line path.

To facilitate adjustment of the' follower 13 relative to the slide 48, a nut and screw adjusting' mechanism is provided, comprising a rotatable'screw' which is screw threaded into a threaded aperture 8| formed within the left-hand end of the sleeve 15 (Fig. 4). The outer end of the screw 40 is formed as an enlarged head 82 having spokes 83 which serve as a hand wheel to facilitate adjustment ofthe screw'to position thefollower 13 as desired. The operation of this improved truing apparatus will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure. Assuming the rollers 45, 50 and 51 to have been previously adjusted to facilitate a free controlled transverse movement of the transversely movable truing tool slide 40, the truing tool 12 together with the transverse slide 40 and longitudinally movable slide 25 are moved longitudinally by rotation of the manually operable traversing wheel 31. The spoked wheel 83 may be rotated to adjust the screw 80 so as to adjust the position of the follower 13 relative to the transversely movable truing tool slide 40 so as to position the diamond or truing tool 12 in operative truing contact with the periphery of the grinding wheel H. The truing tool 12 may be adjusted transversely to govern the extent'of the truing operation by manipulation of the spoked wheel 83. After the truing tool has been adjusted transversely, the truing tool may be traversed longitudinally by rotationof the manually operable traverse wheel 31 to traverse. the truing tool 12 across the face of the grinding wheel H to true a true cylindrical surface on the periphery of the wheel II. The desired amount of truing may be obtained by manipulation of the spoked adjusting wheel 83 and by actuation of the manually operable traverse wheel 31.
If it is desired to true an irregular or curved I face on the periphery of the wheel I I, the forming bar 55 may be readily removed and replaced with a similar bar having a formed surface of a shape corresponding to the shape desired to be reproduced on the periphery of the grinding wheel, after which the operation of the truing apparatus is identical with that previously described.
If it is desired to true a frusto-conical face on the periphery of the grinding wheel II, the
clamping bolts 22 and 23 may be loosened and the plate [8 swivelled in either direction about its supporting stud I 9 as a pivot, after which the plate l8 may be clamped in adjusted position by clamping the screws 22 and 23, after which the diamond may be traversed across the periphery of the grinding wheel I l in a path at an angle to the axis of the grinding wheel ll so as to true a tapered face on the periphery of the grinding wheel ll.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention apparatus in which the various objects hereinbefore set forth together with many thoroughly practical advantages are We claim 1. In a truing apparatusfor a grinding machine having a rotatable grinding wheel, a truing apparatus base, a transversely movable slide on said base which is arranged to move in a plane normal to the axis of the grinding wheel, a truing tool on one end of said slide, an elongated slot passing through said slide, a forming bar exforming bar and follower being arranged so that the thrust thereof on the slide is in an axial direction to preventcramping of the slide. 7
2. In a truing apparatus for a grinding machine having a rotatable grinding wheel, a truing apparatus base, a transversely movable slide 'which is arranged to move in a plane normal to the axis of the grinding wheel, an anti-friction support on said base to support said slide, a truing tool on one end of said slide, an elongated slot passing through the axis of said slide, a forming bar extending through said slot and fixedly supported relative to said base, an axial bore in said slide, an adjustably mounted follower supported therein, and yieldable means to maintain said follower in operative engagement with said forming bar.

In a truing apparatus for a grinding machine having a rotatable grinding wheel, a truing apparatus base, a longitudinally movable slide thereon, a transversely-movable cylindricallyshaped slide which is arranged to move in a horizontal plane normal to the axis of the grinding wheel, a plurality of sets of spaced symmetrically arranged rollers on said longitudinally movable slide to support said transversely movable slide, a truing tool on one end of said transversely movable slide, an elongated slot passing through the axis of said transversely movable slide, a forming bar extending through said slot and fixedly supported relative to said longitudinal slide, an adjustably mounted follower, an axial bore in said transversely movable slide adjustably to support said follower, and yieldable means to maintain said follower in operative engagement with said forming bar, said forming bar, follower and yieldable means being arranged so that their thrust is in an axial direction relative to the transversely movable slide to prevent cramping thereof.

In a truing apparatus for a grinding machine having a base, an angularly adjustable swivel platen thereon, a longitudinally movable slide on said platen, a manually operable nut and screw mechanism to traverse said slide longitudinally, a transversely-movable cylindricallyshaped slide on said first slide which is movable in a plane normal to the axis of the grinding wheel, an anti-friction support on said first slide to support said latter slide, a truing tool fixedly A mounted adjacent to one end of said latter slide. an elongated slot passing through the axis of the second slide, a forming bar fixedly mounted relative to said first slide and passing through said slot, an axial bore extending within said second slide, and a follower adjustably mounted within said bore.

In a truing apparatus for a grinding machine having a base, an angularly adjustable swivel platen thereon, a longitudinally movable slide on said platen, a manually operable nut and screw mechanism to traverse said slide longitudinally, a transversely-movable cylindricallyshaped slide on said first slide which is movable in a plane normal to the axis of the grinding wheel, a plurality of sets of spaced symmetrically-arranged rollers on said first slide to sup, port said latter slide, a truing tool fixedly mounted adjacent to one end of said latter slide,an elongated slot passin through the axis of the second slide, a forming bar fixedly mounted relative to said first slide and passing through said slot, an axial bore extending within said second slide, and a follower adjustably mounted within said bore. In a truingapparatus for a grinding machine having a rotatable grinding wheel, a truing apparatus base, a. transversely-movable cylindripally-shaped slide thereon, a truing tool supported adjacent to oneend of said slide, two sets of spaced, symmetrically arranged rollers on said said slide, a horizontally extending forming bar passing through said slot and fixedly mounted to said base, an adjustable follower within said slide .which is engageable with said forming bar, and a pair of spaced tension springs which are arranged in a horizontal plane with the follower, forming bar and the axis of the slide yieldably to maintain said follower in operative engagement with said formin bar.
