4 Claims. (01. id-424.8)
This invention relates to a novel supporting means for a device employing an adjustable elemen An example of such a device is a radio coil unit having a screw-adjustable elementfor changing the electrical characteristics of the unit.
While the invention is capable of use for supporting objects generally, it is particularly diof coil units for modern radio receivers, such as intermediate frequency transformers, having a presettable element which may be adjusted for changing the tuning of the coil and associated units.
The principal object of the invention is to provide novel means for supporting and actuating a screw-adjustable element such as above-mentioned.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel coil unit-supporting device which maybe economically manufactured and readily assembled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel coil unit-supporting device made entirely of metal stampings.
The invention may be more clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view of a coil assembly embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a principal part of the device of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to Fig. 1 ther is shown a portion of a metal coil shield container i within which a pair of coil units 2 and 3 are mounted on a flber insulating plate 4. In Fig. 2 the coil winding 5 is shown on a tubular form or sleeve i, which may be formed of cardboard, the coil being protected by a covering of wax l. The base of sleeve 6 is provided with an inturned annular flange 8 as shown. The sleeve 6 is secured to the plate 4 by a stamped eyelet 9 having a body portion terminating at one end in an outwardly flanged head it. To secure the eyelet 9 to sleeve 8, the latter preferably is formed with an annular recess or groove ii in which the eyelet flange I ll may be seated as shown in Fig. 2. The assembly of sleeve 8 and eyelet 8 may be held to plate 4 by extending the eyelet through an opening in the plate and securing the assembly therein with any suitable fastening means such as a spring fastener II of conventional form.
As noted above the coil unit is of the type havdesired inturned lip.
ing an adjustable element. This may be a core member I! of comminuted iron slidably disposed in sleeve 8. A threaded adjusting screw i4 may be used to adjust the core l3 axially of sleeve 6 and coil winding 5. Screw i4 is attached to member II and extends through eyelet 9. In accordance with the present invention eyelet 9 is formed with an inturned lip IS on the outer end of the body portion and extending over a portion of the circular end. This lip i5 is best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 from which it will be seen that the lip serves as a single screw thread which may be formed when the eyelet is stamped or which may be formed on a performed eyelet by obliquely striking the end thereof so as to shorten the axial length of the eyelet along one side to provide the Screw i4 is threadedly engaged with lip l5, and core I 3 may thus be held in a preset position or may be adjusted axially of coil 5 by th adjustment of screw i4.
In the case of a multiple coil assembly, as illustrated in Fig. 1, two or more coil units may be secured to an insulating plate in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. The coil assembly may then be placed within the coil shield container i with the screws |4,'and in some cases the end portions of the eyelets 9, the container as illustrated. The coil assembly including plate 4 may be held in position relative to the container i by fastening means it, each of which is preferably fastened on the associated screw i4 so as to lock the same against rotation in addition to securing the coil assembly within the container byproviding a force longitudinally of the axis of the eyelet. One well known form of spring fastener having a detent ll engaging the screw threads is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, and it is believed that the manner of assembling and locking the elemen in place will be clear from the illustration.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the present invention provides a fastening device '10! coil units and the like so designed as to be adapted for economical manufacture and simple assembly, yet the device is entirely reliable and positive. An important advantage of the device is that it eliminates the necessity of providing internal threads on the element which is threadediy engaged with screw it, and it enables the use of the simple stamped eyelet 8 as the said element. It will be understood, of course. that the invention is not limited to the specific form illustrated but is capable of modification within the scope of the appended claims.
extending through openings in gaging saidthread so I claim: 1 l. A device for supporting a tubular object havina an adjustable member, comprising a metal stamping having a hollow elongated body portion secured to and extending axially outward from the tubular object. a mounting plate having an opening therein, the outwardly extending hollow body portion or said stamping extending through the mounting plate opening and constituting the sole support for said tubular object, a member engaging said stamping hollow body portion for attaching the stamping to said mounting plate an inturned to secure the tubular object thereto, lip at the outer end of said stamping body portion providing a screw thread, and screw means associated with said adjustable member extend-- ing through said that said adjustable member may be adjusted by rotation of said screw 4 means.
2. A device for supporting a tubular object having an adjustable member in a container having an aperture therein, comprising a mounting plate having an aperture therein registering with the aperture of said container.- 9. metal stamping having a hollow' elongated body portion secured to and extending axially outward stamping body portion and enfrom the tubular, object through the apertures in the mounting plate and container, and constituting the sole support for said tubular object,
an inturned lip at the outer end of said stamping body portion providing a screw, thread, screw means associated with the adjustable member extending through said stamping body portion' by means or an out-turned flange on the'inner end of the hollow body portion thereof which is interlocked with the adjacent end of said tubular object.
4. A device as claimed inrc1aim 2 wherein the metal stamping is secured to the tubular object by means or an out-turned flange on the inner end of the hollow body portion thereof which is interlocked with the adjacent end of said tubular object. i
