1 Claim.
This invention relates to water treating apparatus, and more particularly to a chemical injection nozzle for delivering reagent or chemical into a water treating apparatus for mixture with and treatment of water in the apparatus.
An object of the present invention is to provide a chemical injection nozzle structure whereby any desired projection of a predetermined quantity of chemical into a water treating apparatus may be provided by simple, easy adjustment of the nozzle structure.
With these and other objects in view, as may appear from the accompanying specification, the invention consists of various features of construction and combination of parts, which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing, showing a chemical injection nozzle for water treating apparatus of the preferred form embodying the invention, and the features forming the invention will be specifically pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the nozzle housing showing the nozzle proper in side elevation.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the outlet end of the nozzle taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the improved chemical injection nozzle structure includes a nozzle retaining and guiding housing I, which may be attached in any suitable manner, as by the flange 2, to the shell of a water treating apparatus of any approved type (not shown). The housing I has axially aligned cylindrical portions 4 and 5 at its upper and lower ends, and a valve seat forming sleeve 6 is removably inserted into the upper cylindrical portion 5. The bore 1 of the sleeve 6 has the same diameter as the bore 8 of the cylindrical portion 4 of the housing I, and the diameter of these bores is such as to receive and snugly fit the exterior diameter of the nozzle 9.
The nozzle 9 is in the form of a straight tube and has a flange l0 carried thereby intermediate of its ends for connection with the flange H on the top of the housing I. The flange Ii! being connected to the flange I and the nozzle 9 being inserted through the sleeve 6 and the cylindrical bore 4, serves to hold the nozzle 9 firmly and securely in place.
The outlet orifice of the nozzle 9 may be regulated to provide the desired projection of the predetermined quantity of chemical into the water treating apparatus. This regulation of the outlet orifice of the nozzle 9 is provided by means of the orifice plug structure 14, which comprises a conical body I5 having a plurality of radiating ribs l6 formed thereon. The outer edges of the ribs parallel to the axis of the conical body I5 are threaded for threaded engagement with the outlet end of the nozzle 9. As hown in Figure 2 of the drawing, the ribs it having outwardly flaring projections I7 on their lower ends, the outer surfaces of which incline parallel to the outer surface of the conical body I5, and these projections l1, engaging the inclined inner surface [8 of the outlet end of the nozzle 9 form stops for limiting the insertion of the orifice plug [4 into the nozzle 9. By varying the degree of insertion of the orifice plug M into the nozzle 9 the crosssectional area of the outlet orifice between the conical body l5 and the inclined surfaces l8 at the end of the nozzle 9 may be varied to regulate the delivery of chemical or reagent into the water treating apparatus through the nozzle 9. The conical body l5, cooperating with the nozzle, will form a spray device, causing the reagent or chemical introduced into the water treating apparatus to be sprayed therein for mingling with the water within the apparatus.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction or arrangement of parts shown, but that they may be widely modified within the invention defined by the claim.
What is claimed is:
In a water treating apparatus, an injection nozzle structure comprising a tubular nozzle having an outlet end, a plug having a conical body coacting with said outlet end to provide an outlet orifice, and means fixed to said conical body and adjustably connected with said outlet end for adjusting the conical body relatively to said outlet end to vary the flow capacity of the outlet orifice, said means being provided with stops engageable with said outlet end in the minimum flow position of the conical body.
