1 Claim.

My invention relates to a new and useful skirt or article of clothing and has for one of its objects to provide an article of this kind in which the waist or belt line is expansible so that it will automatically adjust itself within certain limitations thereby often eliminating alterations and furnishing a comfortable garment to the wearer.

Another object of this invention is to make a skirt with elastic sections in the Waist band and provide an integral belt which covers said sections whereby any gathers or puckers resulting from the contraction of the elastic sections will not be visible while the skirt is being worn.

Another object of the invention is to fashion a skirt with a front panel from which the belt extends resulting in a smooth appearance and giving a slenderizing effect.

A further object of the invention is to utilize the panel, belt and contiguou component parts to provide pockets.

A still further object of the invention is to generally improve the construction of skirts and other similar articles of clothing whereby they may be manufactured in large quantities in a small number of sizes and which will generally fit purchasers having various waist line dimensions without alterations.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, in which Fig. 1 is a View of the skirt as it would appear on a wearer.

Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof.

Fig. 3 is a front view of a modification.

Fig. 4 is a front view of a further modification.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged top view of the waist band and belt when contracted.

Fig. 6 is a similar View expanded.

Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section on the line 'l'! of Fig. 3.

Fig. 8 is a similar view on the line 88 of Fig. 3.

In carrying out my invention as herein embodied l0 represents the skirt fashioned from a suitable or desirable number of sections ll, [2 and a front panel i 3, all sewn together along their meeting edges. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the se tions 11 terminate short o the upper end or top of the skirt and provide pqcketopenings l4.

In all instances the other sections I 2 of the skirt material and the panel 13 extend all the way to the waist band IE to which they are sewn by stitches [6, preferabl along the upper edge of said waist band. This waist band is made up of inelastic parts I! and elastic parts or inserts l8, thereby providing for the expansion and contraction of said waist band.

The panel i3 is provided with lateral wings I9 as parts of the belt 20, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, but said wing portions may be practically or entirely eliminated as shown in Fig. 4. In other words, the belt 20 really extends from the sides of the panel I3 and may include wing portions i9.

Said belt may be produced as integral parts of the panel as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 or it may be fashioned from separate pieces of material and sewn to the lateral edges adjacent the upper end of said panel, as shown in Fig. 3. One end of the belt 20 carries a buckle 2| to which the other end of said belt is detachably fastened. Th panel l3 and possibly portions of the belt 20, especially parts of the wings l9, are secured to the inelastic portion of the waist band in the front between the elastic portions [-8 and the balance of the belt, in some cases all of it, is unattached. Whether or not any part of the belt is fixed to the waist band depends upon the width of the waist band. In all cases those portions of the belt in the region of the elastic parts of the waist band must be of sufiicient width to cover any gathers caused by the contraction of the waist band.

A cord 22 is fixed to the waist line of the skirt beyond each elastic part IB and to the belt permitting limited movements of the waist line of the skirt and said belt relative to each other as the waist band eXpands and contracts so that the unattached portions of the belt covering the regions of the elastic parts of the waist band are held captive.

Gores 23, at least the width of the skirt sec tions II, are sewn to the elastic parts l8 of the waist band [5, to the upper portion of the panel I3 and other sections of the skirt width, the lower edges of said gores depending below the pocket openings and pockets 24 are sewn to the lower edges of said gores and to the upper edges of said skirt sections II.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4, the gores and pockets are eliminated and the upper ends of the skirt sections II are sewn to the elastic parts of the waist band I 5 to produce the same effect as in the construction first described.

The skirt is provided with a placket 25 closed by a hookless fastener 26 disposed in back of the free edges of the material where the placket is formed, and the meeting ends of the waist band may be temporarily secured by any suitable fasteners.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that a skirt made as herein described will fit persons having different waist measurements where the persons may be otherwise of approximately the same size. Also the skirt will accommodate variances in the waist line of the wearer should she gain or lose weight within certain limitations.

Whenever the waist band contracts there are gathers or puckers formed in the skirt material that is secured to the elastic parts of said band but these are not visible because covered by the belt structure and therefore the skirt retains its smooth appearance. a

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described as these may be varied within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:

In a garment of the kind described, a, waist band having elastic parts interposed between inelastic parts, a skirt secured to said waist band, said skirt including a front'panel located between the elastic parts of the waist band and a section on each side of said panel terminating short of the waist line and gores above said short sections within the area of the elastic parts 01' the waistband, said front panel having portions of a belt structure extending from the lateral edges SAMUEL KORSEN.
