Description
Nov. 9, 1943. B. HENDON 2,333,931
BLACKOUT SHADE Filed Aug. ll, 1942 I N V EN TOR. EM/AM//v /L/E/VD o/v.
55 I( 50 52 BY C WWA/Ess: I ATTORNEYS.
Patented Nov. 9, 1943 [UNITED The present'inven'tion relates to new and useful improvements in lamp shades, and more particularly it pertains to a lamp shade especially adapted for use in shielding or masking sources of light during the so-called blackout periods.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a novel construction of lamp shade which will effectively mask or shield a source of light to an extent which will render the same invisible from without the compartment in which the light source is located, and yet provide suflicient illumination within said compartment, to render visible the general locations of its various furnishings and contents.
It is a further object of the invention, so to construct the device that it may be employed in connection with lighting fixtures of conventional construction and type.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood for which purpose, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing and the following description thereof.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp shade constructed in accordance with `the present in?l vention, illustratingl one manner in which the shade may be employed,
Figure 2 is an enlarged central vert-ical sectional View of the shade illustrating the light source therein,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 2, and;
Figure 4 is a central vertical sectional view on a reduced scale illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the shade is designated B. y
While the shade may be constructed in many shapes or forms, I prefer to make the body portion I thereof of cylindrical form as herein illustrated.
The body portion has a fixed end wall ll and a removable end wall I2, the latter having an annular flange I3 which receives and frictionally engages the open end I4 of the body portion I0 to retain the removable end wall upon the open end of the body portion to close the same.
The body portion ID and the xed end wall l l are provided with a suitable lining I5, and the removable end wall I2 has a similar lining I6.
These linings I5 and I6 are formed from any suitable fire resistant material which is also possessed of opaque qualities to render the shade both lire resistant and opaque when the body portion and end walls are formed o-f Such materials as do not have these qualities.
The fixed end wall Il has a centrally disposed opening 20 for the reception of a combined plug and socket fixture 2| which latter is formed with means for retaining it in position in the open-` ing 20.
In the present embodiment of .the invention the plug and socket member 2| is provided with two spaced beads 22 which form an intermediate channel 23 for the reception of the dening edge of the opening 20 of the housing end wall Il, it
being understood that the material of the end `wall will be of such character as to provide a -slight yielding action which will permit of. passage of the edge of the opening 20 to position inthe channel 23 between the beads 22.
Disposed centrally of the removable wall l2, there is a relatively small light emitting opening 24 which is preferably circular in form.
Means is provided to concentrate the light emitted from the housing into beam form, as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing, and as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing this means consists of a body portion 26 having an inwardly turned flange 2l on one end thereof.
The inwardly turned flange is of such width that whenv it is turned inwardly as above described, its inner edge denes an opening 28 of substantially the same diameter as that of the light emitting opening 24 as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing..
The light concentrating means in this form of the invention is permanently secured to the inner face of the removable end wall I2 by placing the outer face'of the iiange 21 in contact therewith and securing it in such position by a suitable adhesive, stapling, or the like.
In that form of the invention illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, the light concentrat-l ing means consists of a tubular member 3U which is of an external diameter to have a friction fit within the opening 3| of the removable end wall 32 of the housing 33. member 30, when in operative position, has a portion 34 which projects slightly into the housing 33 and a relatively longer portion 35 which projects beyond the outer face of -the end wall 32.
It will be understood that in both forms of the invention, the light concentrating means will have the opaque and the re resisting qualities or characteristics.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel This tubular A shade of the type described 'comprising incombination, a cylindrical housing, an opaquev While the invention has been herein disclosed inV its preferred form, it is to be understood that Vit is capable of embodiment in such other forms lining therefor, an end wall having alamp socket receiving opening thereinxedly secured to one end of the cylindrical housing. an opaque lining for said fixed `end wall, al removable end wall having a light emitting opening therein for closing the opposite end of the housing, an opaque lining for said removable end wall. and
means carried by said removable endwall for concentratingrthe lightemittedIrom the light emitting opening thereof into beam form, said I i. means comprising a, cylindrical member having a i Aflanged end dening an Lopening oi' a diameter as rightfully fall within the scope vof thegapf'A pended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byiLetters Patent, is:
Aequal to that of the opening in the removable l, end wall, said member projecting inwardly from `and being secured to the inner face of the removable end wall with its -opening in registration with the opening therein.
BENJAMIN HENDON.
