LIPSTICK RECEPTACLE Filed DSC. 10, 1941 A f @ff e r 25 ,ifm
Patented Nov. 9, 1943 LIPSTICK RECEPTACLE Herbert S. Ruekberg, Chicago,. Ill., assignor to Elmer ErMills Company, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Application December 10, 1941, Serial No. 422,338
(Cl. 20G-56) 1 Claim.
a structure of the type specied which is easily assembled and disassembled for purposes of reloading the carrier element thereof after the initial lipstick or the like has been consumed.
A suitable embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a sectional perspective view partly in elevation, showing a lip-stick receptacle constructed in accordance with the invention, the cover element of the same being shown in central longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the device, the vertically reciprocable carrier for the lipstick being shown in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a plan sectional view of the same taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of a helically slotted member of the device rotatable with respect to other parts to impart reciprocable movements to the carrier.
Fig. I5 is" an enlarged perspective View of the lipstick carrier.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail central longitudinal sectional View of the device devoid of the cover element and showing the carrier and the sleeve within which the member shown in Fig. 4 is rotatable with said carrier disposed in position for removal and replacement.
rlhe structure comprises a cylindrical member I, composed of a suitable plastic material, such as polystyrene, which is provided internally with a longitudinal groove 2 of appreciable depth.
Rotatably engaged in said member I is the hollow cylindrical member 3 rigid at one end with a peripherally recessed head 4 and which is equipped between its ends with a helical slot 5 of a length arcuately, of substantially twice the diameter of said member 3 and of a pitch of substantially 45 degrees in the instance illustrated, said pitch and length being variable at will.
The slot 5 terminates at a point spaced from the upper end of Vthe member 3land also terminates at a point spaced from the annular groove 6 in the lower end portion of said member 3, the said groove 6 being spaced from the head 4.
The said groove 6 cooperates with suitable formations such as rounded projections l, on the inner face of said end portion of the member I which are snapped into and out of said groove to hold the members I and 3 against relative longitudinal movement While permitting easy disengagement of the same from said member 3.
The cover'member 8 of the device receives telescopically the member l and has its lower end abutting the head 4 of the member 3. The lower end portion of said cover 3,v engages the lower end portion of the member I rmly frictionally in a well known manner to hold the latter and said cover fairly rmly but detachably engaged with each other.
The lip-stick carrier 9 is cylindrical externally and constitutes a receptacle for an end portion of a lip-stick or the like. The outer diameter of said carrier 9 is slightly less than the inner diameter of the member 3 so that, as shown in Fig. 6, said carrier may be canted with respect .to the member 3 to effect its removal from the latter when it is at the upper limit of its movement with respect thereto as determined by the upper terminal of the helical slot 5.
The carrier 9 is equipped adjacent its bottom surface with a radial projection or pin I0 which projects through the slot 5 into the groove 2 of the member when said carrier is axially aligned with the members I and 3 and is thus held against rotation with respect to the member I.
The lower end of the member I rests, normally, upon the head 4 of the member 3 and is held against rotation in one hand While the head 4 of member 3 is rotated to cause the helical slot of the latter to impart longitudinal movement to the carrier 9. A vent hole I2 is provided in the bottom wall of the carrier 9 to permit easy insertion of a. lip-stick and the removal of the unused end portion of same.
All parts above described are composed of plastic material of the same or respectively different colors, the only exception being the projection or pin I0 which, preferably is a metallic device embedded for the major part of its length in the bottom wall of the carrier 9.
In order to permit the device to be made cheaply without resort to anything more than molding in the well-known manner, common to the production of plastics, the slot 5 is bordered by bevelled walls II which permit easy removal of the member 3 from a two part mold separable along a diametric plane of said member3.
The assembled structure is rendered very ornamental in appearance by reason of the several diii'erent colors of its component parts without resort to further decoration.
I claim as my invention: y
A structure of the type specified which comprises a hollow cylindrical member rigid at its -closed end with a head presenting a peripheral ber, a tube composed o! resilient material telescopically disposed over said first-named member and rotatable relative thereto, said tube equipped internally with a longitudinal groove in which the outer end portion oi' said projection engages to prevent rotation of said container as said firstnamed member is rotated relative to said tube, the latter also equipped internally with projections adapted to be snapped 'into said annular groove to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said iirst-named member and said tube, said container being so loosely iitted into said nrstnamed member as to permit the same to be tilted when at the upper limit of its movement to effect Withdrawal of said projection from said helical slot and removal oi' said container from said rstnamed member.
