MARZlLLl ER 2,333,483 W LIVING EQUIPMENT 0R FURNITURE Filed Ja nlj 2 1, 1941- 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 2, 1943 UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE LIVING EQUIPMENT a FURNITURE Paul Marzillier, Milwaukee, v ApplicationJanuary 21, 1941, Serial No. 375,11 I d Claims. ((-2) Y The invention relates to aportable unitary piece of living equipment or furniture which can be readily put into its appointed location, which fits into many types of rooms and buildings and which is designed to be readil m'onirerted so as to serve a plurality of 'uses.
\ The principal object of the invention is to provide a unitary article of living equipment which is arranged to normally conceal an extensible bed,
while at the same time a; simple manipulation converts the device for anotheruSe su'ch as a writing desk and/or bookcase; while in both positions affording access to storage cabinets which themselves maybe adapted t'o a plurality of uses.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a piece'of living equipment of aforementioned-type which in either its closed or' open position does not detract from the appearanceof the room in which it'is placed, but on thecontrary lends proprietary atmosphere to-such room and gives it the appearance and usefulness of a conventional bed or living or'dravving room or the like.
Another object is to provide fora novel method of combining a'bed with-other featuresincorporated in a single piece of equipment. 3
Another object is to provide a piece of room equipment which does not require thatthe room be specially designed for its placement.
Another object is to provide a piece of con vertible living equipment which whenarranged for either'use preserves the atmosphere of the room typical'of such use. I 7
The accompanying drawings illustrate one embodiment of the invention'in which the device normally serves as a combination desk and bookcase, while in the extended position the device serves as a bed. At the same time the device provides storage spaces for books, ffiles,' wardrobe and thelike. In the accompanying drawings a Fig. 1 showsthe devic'e in the closed position installed in aroom, I V
Fig. 2 shows the desk -portion opened for use as a writing desk or the like, h
Fig. 3 shows the devicecompletely opened with the bed in the position for use, V Y,
Fig. 4 shows the'device' when used as a desk with one of the'compartments opened' to permit access to the storage space in the desk, while a Fig. 5 is a cross sectionthrough the device in the position shown in Fig. 2. 1 7
Referring to the drawings the same illustrates a cabinet having a bottom wall I, a rear wall 2, end walls 8 and a top 3, hinged at 4 to the rear wall 2, sothat it may be opened to afford access to a compartment 5.- The compartment 5 is formed by a bottom member'G, a front wallLthe top part of rear wall 2, the top 3 and the end walls 8. The latter also forms with the bottom wall I, the rear wall2'and the Wall 6 a'lowe'r compartment 9 adapted to receive the frame I0 of a bed. 7 The frame Illfcomprises thepartition memberl l, side walls l2 and front and re'ar'rails [3 which are arranged toreceive a bed spring l3? and mattress l4 of any desired conventional type, suitable fastening means being provided to hold the spring and mattress in the frame when th same is tilted to a vertical position.
The frame I0 is provided with front legs I 5 an its rear end is hinged by a pivot I! extending through a side wall attached to a forward extension IB of the'bottom' I "and side members 20 of the frame 10. The front legs l5 are preferably pivoted so that in the vertical position of the bed frame they fold inwardly so as not'to interfere with the cabinets 23. "Fastened'to'the front or bottom side' of the frame l0 intermediate of its ends is a longitudinal wall or sh'elf' I!) which together with side members 20 attached to frame l0 and a top member 2 I, attached to the main frame, form a rectangular opening or compartment which may be 'closedby a lid 22 which is hinged to permit opening thereof to form an extension of the bottom l9 so as to serve as a writing surface; and the compartment maybe provided with any desired arrangement of pigeon holes or compartment for the'storage of writing material and the like. Hinged to the side walls 8 on either side of the device are cabinets 23 which may have any internal arrangement of shelves or the like and which as shown in Fig. 3 may be swung into any desired angular position and thus are made accessible and'in this position permit the lowering of the bedto'its normal position. Front and rear may be closed by doors. 'I'he cabinets 23 maybe subdivided in'any desired manner and may be provided with doors on either side as may be convenient' to provide access to the interior with the equipment in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The shelf l9 together with the bottom extension I8 and the side member 20 form in theclosed position'a lower'well 24 to provide for leg space for a user of thede'sk, when the leaf 22 is in the horizontal position. This lower well 24 may be provided with atiltable box 25 adapted for the reception ofpillows or'any other material desired. I Said box'25 may be suitably hinged at position, and may be latchedin th closed position by any suitable means.
In order to protect the contents of the desk compartment when the bed is swung downward it is desirable to provide a further partition 29 at right angle and attached to the bottom member H to move therewith. In the closed position the lid 22 abuts the partition 29. The latter is preferably made transparent or provided with a transparent insert to permit lightfr-om a lamp to shine on the writing surface. The lamp 30 may be a tubular fluorescent lamp attached to the under side of the extension 2!.
In the device shown in the drawings the compartments 23 do not extend down to the bottom extension [8 but interposed between the former and the latter is a compartment 2'l'wh'ich is pro- The compartments 21 are of a height to permit the bed upon being opened to clear these compartments or drawers.
To close the device the bed is first folded up- WR-IGL- thereafter the compartments .23 are swung inwardly ,into the position shown in Fig. 1 to present the appearance of a closedrdesk. If it is desired to use theidesk it-is only necessary to open the i-id or shelf .22 as shown inl ig. 2 and/or to swing out the cabinets 23.
Eli-g4 shows-the inside of :one of the cabinets 2,3 which may be arranged to serve as wardrobes or like alone,-or as aforestated may serve as a wardrobe accessible when swung outwardly as in Figs. 3 and 4 while the front part which may be closed by a door and which is accessible when the cabinets are swung inwardly as in Figs. 1 and 2, may serve .as a {book cabinet or the like.
