SAND-BAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,266, dated October 12, 1880. Application filed August 18, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lewis B. LUPTON, of Comanche, in the county of Comanche, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to sand-bands for vehicle-hubs; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a side View, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional "16W.
Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
The object of my invention is to prevent sand and dirt from Working in between the axle and hub and into the axle-box of a vehicle, and for this purposeI employ the improved construction of parts which ,I shall now proceed more fully to describe.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the spindle of the axle; B, the axle-box, and C the hub, which may be of metal, wood, or of both materials combined.
D is the axle, which is provided adjoining the spindle with a flange, E, upon which is adjusted a collar, F, of sheet metal or other suitable substance, projecting into a recess in the hub, where it is tightly fitted.
G is a packing-ring, of leather or other suitable material, fitted upon the spindle within collar F, and held up to the juncture of the hub and spindle by means of an angle-plate, H, adjusted upon the axle by means of one of the clips, I, by which the axle and axle-tree are connected, or, if preferred, by some other suitable means.
From this description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, durable, and easily applied.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the hub C, axle-box B, and axle D, having flange E, of the collar F, packing-ring G, adjustable angle-plate H, and clip I, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS R. LUPTON.
