4 Claims.
This invention relates to buttons and more particularly to a button having a hollow metal cap and a rigid reinforcing non-metallic body insert provided with a garment-attaching eye at the rear portion thereof.
One object of this invention is to provide a button of the above nature which will be eco-' nomical in the use of metal and which may be employed for dress or uniform buttons having embossed designs on the top portions thereof.
Another object is to provide an embossed button of the above nature in which the design on the front of the button will remain always in one position and will be prevented from twisting with respect to the reinforcing insert and garment-attaching eye.
A further object is to provide a button of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, ornamental in appearance and very efficient and durable in use. With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may be conveniently em bodied in practice.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a top perspective view of a uniform button embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom perspective view of the Referring now to the drawing inwhich like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral It in- I dicates a convex sheet metal cap having an embossed raiseddesign H pressed into its convex upper portion, and also having a cylindrical bottom skirt E2, the lower edge E3 of which is bent inwardly and engaged tightly with a solid nonmetallic body insert I i, preferably formed of Bakelite or other similar moldable composition, said edge l3 having a flush joint with the substantially fiat bottom surface It: of the insert I l.
The non-metallic insert I4 is provided with a convex top portion it which is identical in shape with the embossed design H on the top cap Hi said design being shown as a raised star. By means of this construction, the cap it and the insert 14 will be interfitted snugly together in such a manner that the top metal cap II will be positively prevented from twisting with respect to the body insert Hi, thus maintaining the design in the proper right-side-up position at all times.
In order to attach the button to'a garment,
provision is made of a looped wire eye ll, having abutting inwardly curved neck portions l8 and H) which terminate in a pair of outwardly turned legs 20 and 2| which are adapted to be embedded in the lower part of the plastic body it during the process molding the latter.
Provision is also made of a reinforcing metal cup 22 having an open top rim 23, which cup is also embedded in the plastic body during molding, and has a central aperture 24 in its bottom surface loosely embracing the necks l8 and ill of the wire looped eye l'l.
, In order to complete the manufacture of the button and provide for a more rigid construction, the reinforcing metal cup 22 is secured to the garment-attaching eye H as by a ring of solder 25, said solder being attached to the neck p0rtions l8 and 19 below the cup 22 and to the outturned legs 20 and 21 above the base of said cup 22. i
While it is preferred to make the non-metallic button insert I4 from plastic molded composition of the Bakelite type, it is also within the spirit and scope of the invention to make said insert from glass or ceramics.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
1. In a button constructed of metallic and nonmetallic materials, a hollow metal cap having a raised design impressed thereon, a body insert of rigid non-metallic material having its top surface shaped to fit into said cap and provided with an embossed design interfitted with the design on said cap for preventing relative rotation therebetween, garment-attaching means embedded in said body insert and projecting below it, and a metal cup surrounding and, reinforcing said attaching means and also embedded in said body insert said cup being rigidly secured to said garment-attaching means.
2. In a button, a hollow metal cap, a rigid nonmetallic body insert fitted into and secured to said cap, said body insert being provided with a projecting looped garment attaching eye having a pair of necks and out-turned legs embedded in the central portion of said body insert, said legs being reinforced by a metal cup secured to said eye and embedded in said body insert, said cup having a central aperture surrounding said necks.
3. In a button, a hollow metal cap, a rigid nonmetallic body insert fitted into and secured to said cap, said body insert being provided with a projecting looped garment-attaching eye having a pair of necks and out-turned legs embedded in v the central portion of said body insert, said legs being reinforced by a metal cup soldered to said eye and embedded in said body insert, said cup having a central aperture surrounding said necks. 4. In a button constructed of metallic and nonmetallic materials, a hollow metal cap having a raised design impressed thereon, a body insert of rigid non-metallic material having its top surface shaped to fit into said cap and provided with an embossed design interfitted with the design on said cap for preventing relative rotation therebetween, garment-attaching means embedded in said bodyinsert and projecting below'it, and a metal cup surrounding and reinforcing said attaching means and also embedded in said body insert,.said cup being rigidly secured to said gar'-' ment-attaching means, and said cap having a a depending flange embracing the periphery of said body insert and bent inwardly against the back of said insert to lock said cap securely in position.
