vention is to provide a shaving device wherein,
the cutter guard and hair guiding means is mounted for free rotational movement during the shaving operation and may be rolled over the face instead of being dragged, as in the usual arrangements.
A further object is to provide a shaving device having an improved cutting blade'arrangement.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved shaving implement of the above type, in which a plurality of blades are driven by a single motive device butare supported for independent edgewise movement under the action of centrifugal force during the shaving operation.
Other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a shaver embodying the features of the herein described invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the same, with a portion of the casing cut away at one end and showing the cutting head and adjacent portion of the casing in section; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken through the blade guard, the blade and associated parts of the guard being shown in full lines, taken substantially on the line III- -III of Figure 2.

Surrounding the outer ball race, there is provided a ring member 2| having a shallow groove 22 at its lowermost end portion. This groove is on the inner surface of the ring and provides a seat for the outer ball race. The upper inner portion of the ring 2| is provided with suitable teeth to form an internally toothed ratchet wheel,

A cutter guard 24 of frusto-conlcal shape is secured to the ring 2|, the cutter guard being provided with an integral peripheral flange 25 which is adapted to be disposed over the outer surface of the ring 2|. This flange, ring 2|, and outer ball race are secured together to form a unit by means of suitable screws 26 which are arranged to have their innermost ends set against the outer ball race.
With the arrangement just described, it will be apparent that the cutter guard will be mounted so that it may rotate freely about its axis during the shaving operation. Thus, the cutter guard may 'be rolled over the face during the shaving operation and will not be dragged over the skin, as in More specifically, the casing perforations may be slots,holes and the like which will receive the hairs and permit them to project through the inner surface of the guard, where they may be severed by a suitable cutter.
As clearly shown in Figure 2, the closed end of the casing may be provided with a central bore 28 which is fitted with spaced bearings 29 and 30 for supporting the adjacently disposed ends of a main driving shaft 3| and a shaft extension 32. The adjacently disposed ends of the main shaft and the shaft extension may be interconnected in the space between the bearings 29 and 30 by a flexible shaft coupling, as generally shown at 33. r
The shaft extension 32 projects within the cutter guard 24 and has its axis coincident with the axis of the guard. This shaft is of bifurcated or split construction throughout a portion of its length for overlappingly eceiving the innermost edges-of a pair of radially extending cutter blades 35 and 36. The innermost edge of each cutter blade is provided with spaced slots 31 for respectively receiving an associated pin 38 carried by the shaft. The pin and slot arrangement enables the blades to move outwardly and inwardly in an edgewise direction under the action of centrifugal force when the shaft 32 is being rotated during the operation of the shaver.
The outermost edges of the cutter blades are angularly disposed to respectively define inclined cutting edges 39 which are adapted to engage the undersurface of the cutter guard and he slid thereover, when the shaft extension 32 is rotated.
In the shaver described herein, the extension shaft is rotated in one direction only. With the cutter guard mounted for rotation, it will be apparent that there would be a tendency for the cutter guard to follow the direction of movement of the cutter blades. In order to constrain the cutter guard against rotation in the same direction as that in which the cutter blades are moving, there is swingably mounted on the ring l8 a latching pawl 40. This pawl is pivoted at one end on a pivot screw 4| and is arranged at its free end to engage the inwardly extending teeth 23 of the annular ring 2|. The pawl 40 is retained in latching position by means of a suitable spring 42 which is anchored atone end to the retaining ring I8 and has its free end bearing against the pawl.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the present invention provides an improved shaver having an improved cutting head construction which utilizes a novel cutter blade guard; which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and is not apt to get out of order or give trouble over long periods of use; which embodies a novel cutter guard and hair guiding means mounted for free rotational movement during the shaving operation so as to enable the guard to be rolled over the skin instead of being dragged, as in the usual arrangements; which utilizes an improved cutting blade arrangement; and in which an improved shaving implement is-provided having a plurality of blades driven by a single motive device, but wherein the blades are supported for independent edgewise movement under the action of centrifugal force during the shaving operation.
It will, of course, be understood that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and it is, therefore. not the purpose to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described, a cutting head having a perforate portion, a rotatable shaft, a blade carried by the shaft for rotation therewith and having a cutting edge for cooperating with said portion, means independent of said shaft supporting said portion for rotation in a direction the same as or in opposition to the rotation of said blade, and means for opposing rotation of said portion in the direction of movement of said blade.
2. In a device of the character described, a cutting head having a perforate portion, a ro tatable shaft, a blade carried by the shaft for rotation therewith and having a cutting edge for cooperating with said portion, means independent of said shaft supporting said portion for rotation in a direction the same as or in opposition to the rotation of said blade, and ratchet means opposingrotation of said portion in one of said directions,
3. A hair cutting device comprising an elongate casing, a perforate member mounted for free rotation 'on one end of the casing, means for constraining the free rotation of said member in one direction only, a rotatable shaft separate from said perforate member and disposed with its axis extending longitudinally within the casing and having one end adjacent the perforate member, and a cutting blade carried by and movable with the shaft, said blade having a cutting edge engageable with and movable over the undersurface of said member, said blade and member being movable in opposite directions but constrained against movement in the same direction.
4. A hair cutting device comprising a hollow housing, an anti-friction member having its inner raceway embracing an end of said housing, a perforate cup-shaped cutting head surrounding and being connected to the outer raceway of said anti-friction member, a rotatable shaft within and extending beyond said casing and terminating in spaced relation from said cutting head, and a cutting blade carried by said shaft for movement together with and relative to said shaft, said cutting blade having a cutting edge for cooperating with said cutting head.
5. A hair cutting device comprising an elongate hollow housing having adjacent annular recesses of different diameters at one end, an anti-friction bearing member seated within one of said recesses, means in the other of said recesses for maintaining said anti-friction memberin said one recess, a cutting head having a thin frustoconical perforate portion and 'a cylindrical portion, said cylindrical portion being connected to said anti-friction member for free rotation therehollow housing having adjacent annular recesses of different diameters at one end, an anti-friction bearing having its inner raceway seated within one of said recesses, an annular ring in the other of said recesses having a peripheral portion seated on said inner raceway, a second annular ring embracing the periphery of the outer raceway of said anti-friction bearing and having teeth on its inner periphery above said outer raceway, a spring pressed ratchet on the flrstmentioned annular ring engaging said teeth for restricting rotation of said second annular ring in one direction only, a perforate cup-shaped cutting head embracing said second annular ring for rotation therewith, a rotatable shaft in and ex: tending beyond said one end of the casing and terminating in spaced relation from said cutting head, a slot through said shaft in its portion extending beyond said casing, spaced pins bridging said slot, 8. pair of blades having cutting edges along opposite margins and overlapping portions seated within said shaft slot, and registered slots in the overlapping portions of said blades for receiving said pins therethrough, said pins and slots cooperating to guide said blades in edgewise movements radially of said shaft in response to centrifugal force for seating the cutting edges thereof against the inner surface of the perforate cutting head when said shaft is rotated.
