The-hardlilberfpercussion head 32may have a right angularouter end periphery as'sho'wn in Figures land 2, or if preferred the outer end periphery thereof may be rounded as indicated at 44 in Figures 4 and 5. The-latter form is found desirable in tin shops, bicycle shops and the like where heavy work must be accomplished without cutting cr otherwise marring the metal being shaped.` i f In the embodimentflthe invention shownv in Figures 7,` 8, and 9, the body member H0 and handle ||2 are secured together as previously described. In this modification the metal percussion heads 45 are identical and areconn'ected to`and as shown, are integral with-the ferrules 46. Fastening means comprising screws 41 pass through the-'ferrules 46 into the'body member I Infor securing these parts in assembly. Preferably a little space indicated at 48 separates each ferrule 46 from the adjacent shoulder 49 -of the body member H6, so'that the shock to the'percussion head during use of the'mallet is transmitted to the center 'of the body member H0 rather than tov the edgesthereof. The ferrules 46 may, if desiredpbe swaged over the heads of the screws 41 Where indicated at 50 to prevent dislodgment of the screws during use of the mallet. y Y y It will thus beseen that the mallet of the present invention is a sturdy, economical, efdcient and attractive tool, and while butV two specific embodimentsY oi.' the Vinvention have `been herein y in said cavity for counterbalancing the handle when the body member is stood on end.
2. In a mallet, an elongated body member hav- `ing substantially flat ends, a handle attached thereto projecting laterally from the middle thereof, said body member having a cavity in each end thereof in the outer portion of the body member and in the plane ,common to the longitudinal axes yof said body member and handle, and a relatively heavy slug disposed in each of said cavities for counterbalancing the handle when the `body member is stood on either of its ends.
3. Inamallet, an elongated body member having substantially flat ends, a handle attached thereto projecting laterally' therefrom, said body member having a cavity in one end thereof in the outer portion of the body member and in the plane common to the longitudinal axes of said body member and handle, a relatively heavy slug disposed in said cavity for counterbalancing the handle when the body member is stood on end, a ferrule circumscribing said end of the body member and extending beyond said end, fastening means passing through the ferrule into the body member and through said cavity for securing the ferrule to the body member and sealing theslug in the cavity, and a percussion head Vsea-ted Within the ferrule in abutment with the body member.
4. Ina mallet, an elongated body member having substantially flat ends, a handle attached thereto projecting laterally from the middle thereof, said body member having a' cavity in each end thereof in the outer portion of the body member and in the plane common to the longitudinal axes of said body member and handle, a relatively heavy slug `disposed in each of said cavities for counterbalancing the handle when the body member is stood on either of its ends, a pair..of ferrules circumscribing the opposite ends of thebody member and extending beyond said ends, fastening means passing through each` ferrule into the'body member and through the adjacent ,cavity for securing each ferrule to the body member and for sealing the adjacent slug in its cavity, and a percussion head seated within each ferrule in abutment with the body member.
