This invention relates to locks particularly adapted for use in connection with trunks or other equipment having hasps, keepers and locking means therefor.
In trunk locks it has heretofore been common to provide a lock which may be opened either by a key or by combination means. In this type of lock the locking means has usually been mounted on the trunk within the keeper plate andthe combination means only has been mounted on the hasp. Such an arrangement does not lend itself well to employmentv ofv a standard key operated lock, and thejuse of a standard key operated lock in conjunction With the combination means is very desirable from the standpoint of availability as Well as'economy. Moreover, mounting of the `key operatedrlock mechanismen the trunk Within the keeper plate and mounting of vthe locking means only ony the hasp involves considerable installation trouble -in attaining the proper co-operative action between the mechanism and the means because of inaccessibility of the key operated lock mechanism. Further, the keeper plate, with the`key operated lock mechanism therein; 'and the hasp which carries the combination means,k are both riveted to the trunk, and in the event of trouble Yin in stallation of the combination means in -co-'ope'rative relation with the key operated vlock -mechal nism, the keeper plate, or the hasp, or both, may have to be removedl from the trunk after Vbeing riveted thereon,`with resulting danger of damage to the trunk. Slidably mounted in the casing 21 to pass in and outof the bolt openings 28 are spaced, opposed lock bolts 3|' formed integrally with a pair of lock bolt plates 32 slidably loverlapping each other in said casing, each having'aligned, spring receiving slots 33. Positionedin kthe slots 33 and bearing against lugs 34 on the plates 32 are small coil springs 35 which act to force the plates 32 and the bolts 3| outwardly in opposite directions so that said bolts normally project outwardly of the casing 21 through the bolt openings 23.Y The springs 35 and beveled faces 35 on the bolts 3| enable said bolts to snap past the circular edge of thekeeper plate opening 2| when the liasp l5 vis swung toward the same. Thereupon the bolts 3| through the action of the springs 35 engage lthe backof keeper plate I8 adjacent the opening 2 to lock the trunk.
The lock bolt plates 32 are provided centrally thereof with key lugs 31 and key spaces 38 (Figure '1) which, when the plates are assembled together, present a key opening 39 (Figure 4) disposed centrally of the lock. In accordance With my invention, the bolt plates 32 are provided with pins 4l] forming part of a connection whereby the lock may be operated through the medium of means hereinafter described.
Arranged for partial rotation in the casing 2l', and bearing against the lock bolt plates 32, is a substantially circular connector plate 4| (Fig- -ures 5 and '1) providedv with a key opening 42 axially aligned with the key opening 33 of bolt plates 32. The connector plate 4| has diametrically opposed, substantially triangular shaped Acam openings 43 in which extend the pins 40 oi bolt plates 32. Pivotally mounted, as at 44, upon the connector plate 4| isa lever 45 which has at its free end a disk engaging lug 43. Secured to the opposite end of the lever 45 is a leaf spring 41 that extends between the side wall of the casing 21 and a lug 43 on the connector plate 4|. A key plug 49 (Figures 2 and 9) is provided axially with opposed inreaching slotted openings 50 which, when said plug is fitted in casing 21, are aligned with the key openings 39 and 42 of bolt plates 32 and connector plate 4|, respectively. When opening the lock by a key inserted through the openings 50, 42 and 39 whereupon, by vturning the key in the proper direction to engage the key lugs 31, the bolts 3| and plates 32 will be drawn inwardly toward each other so that Vrthe lock may be opened.
The key plug 49 is provided with an enlarged head 5| and a reduced shank 52.` The shank 52 has rotatably fitted thereon a ring53 having peripheral key Ways 54 and 55. Mounted on the ring 53 is a lock casing cover` plate 55 provided centrally with an opening 51 and lugs 51', 51" which fit in the key ways 54 and 55 of said ring. The cover plate 53 is provided with diametrically opposed lugs 58 for securing the plate 56 on the casing 21 in the recesses 29 thereof. The cover plate bears against the head 5i of the key plug 49 and said key plug and the ring carry lock opening means preferably arranged and con structed as follows.

Rotatably mounted on the ring 53 Aand bearing against the washer 64 is a disk 65 provided centrally with an opening 66 through which the ring 53 extends. Secured to the disk 65 is a lug G1 which extends into the slot 62 of the disk 60 for interengagement therewith. The disk also has a lugr 68 extending in a direction opposite that of the lug 61 and having a function to be presently described. The disk 55 has a peripheral notch 69, and mounted, on the ring 53 and bearing Aagainst. said disk is a Washer 'l5 having a lugr 19 iitted in the key way 54 of said ring.

Under these conditions, the-lugs58 of cover plate 56 will be aligned with the recesses29 in the casing 21 so thatupon pressing-the lugs' in said recesses, the

The casing 21 and parts'therein are now placed in the cup I6 of the haspy i5 so that thefront vend of the key plug lI9 projects forwardly ofthe hasp through an opening 84.-(Figure 2) formed in the hasp cup I6 centrally thereof. The dial 89 contains key slots 89 aligned with thev key slots 50 of the plug 49 and with the key Aopenings 39 and 42 of the bolt plates 32 andthe `connector plate-4|, respectively. The dial 88 has an annular beveled portion 90 providedr therearound with a scale including the usual graduated marks and 'numbers herein shown as comprising the 'series 0 to 9, inclusive. Throughrotation of the dial 88 predetermined numbers 'of this series .are successively brought opposite a mark 9| on the keeper plate `I8 to set the disks 69, G5 and 1| so that the Vlock may be opened by the dial.
In the operatio-n of key, the hasp will be closed as `shown in Figures l to 33, inclusive and the bolts 3|v will be engaged t8- at the' rear. The key is inserted through the openings 39,59, 42 and 39 of the dial '88, key plug 49', connector plate 4|, and bolt plates 32, respectively, whereupon-by turning the key in the proper direction it engages the lug-S -"31 Yof the bolt plates 32, thus drawing said plates and the bolts v3| inwardly againstthe plate and bolt expanding `action of vthe springs 35, and disengaging the bolts from vthe Akeeper plate' |18. A key operated lock standard construction may, in accordance with my invention, be ernployed in conjunction with. combination means on a hasp, through the novel arrangement and yconstruction of the parts and connections com'- prising said invention, and while the Yuse of Aa standard key operated lock is contemplated and, with thev exception of the pins 4|),v is in all sub.- stantia'l respects disclosed 4in conjunction with the form of embodiment of my invention herein .illustrated `and described, itis to. be. expressly ofy its openings 43 er1- ing plug therefor both mounted understoodthat my invention is not limited yto such a lock or said form of embodiment or otherwise than by the terms of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a lock having akeeper and a hasp hinged for swinging movement relative thereto, the combination of a lock having a key operated opening plug mounted on the hasp, lsaid lock being disposed lrearwardly of the hasp for co-operation with the keeper and said plug being rotatably disposed in an opening extending through said hasp, interengageable combination disks rotatably mounted on the key plug, control means interengageable with one of said disks and xed on the key plug, a dial fixed on the key plug forwardly of the hasp and operable to rotate the plug and the control means thereby to set and unset the disks, and mechanism actuated by the control means for connecting the lock therewith when the disks are set and for disconnecting the lock from said control means when said combination disks are unset.
2. In a lock having a keeper and a hasp hinged for swinging movement relative thereto, the combination of a lock and a key operated opening plug therefor both mounted on the hasp, said lock being disposed rearwardly of the hasp for co-operation with the keeper and said plug being rotatably disposed in an opening extending through said hasp, interengageable combination disks rotatably mounted on the key plug, control means interengageable with one of said disks and fixed on the key plug, a dial fixed on the key plug forwardly of the hasp and operable to rotate the plug and the control means to set and unset said disks, and mechanism enabling the lock to be operated either by the dial or a key, said mechanism comprising a device actuated by the control means for connecting the lock therewith when the combination disks are set, and means onthe control means for disconnecting said device therefrom when said disks are unset.
3. In a lock having a keeper and a hasp hinged for swinging movement relative thereto, the combination of a lock and a key operated opening plug therefor both mounted on the hasp, said lock being disposed rearwardly of the hasp for :3o-operation with the keeper and said plug being rotatably disposedin an opening extending through said hasp, interengageable combination disks rotatably mounted on the key plug, control means interengageable with one of said disks and xed on the key plug, a dial fixed on the key plug forwardly of the hasp and operable to rotate the plug and the control means to set and unset said disks, and mechanism controlled by said control means enabling the lock to be operated either by the dial or a key, said mechanism comprising a plate rotatably mounted between the control means and the lock and connected with the latter, a detent pivotally mounted on the plate and connecting it with the control means when said disks are set, and a cam on the control means for disconnecting said detent from the control means when the combination disks are unset.

In a lock having a keeper and a hasp pivoted for swinging movement relative thereto, the combination of a lock and a key operated openon the hasp, said lock being disposed rearwardly of the hasp for co-operation with the keeper and said plug being rotatably disposed in an opening extending lthrough said hasp, -disks rotatably mounted on the key plug, conings of the connector interengageable combination trol means interengageable with one fof said disks and fixed on the key plug, a dial xed on the key plug forwardly of the hasp and operable to rotate the plug and the'control means to set and unset said disks, and mechanism: controlled bythe control means enabling the lock to be operated either by the dial or a key, said mechanism comprising aplate rotatably 4mounted between the lock and'said disks, `a spring controlled detent Ipivotally mounted on the plate and connecting it with the control means when said disks are set, pin and cam .connections between Vthe plate and the lock,.and a camA on` the, control means for disconnecting said detent therefrom when the combination disks are unset. y
5. In a lock having a keeper anda hasp pivoted for swinging movement relative thereto,y lthe combination of a'lock anda key operated opening plug therefor `both mounted on 'the hasp, said lock being disposed' rearwardly of the` hasp for co-operation with the keeper and said plug being rotatably ldisposed inan opening extending through said hasp, interengageable combination disks rotatably mounted, on the key plug, a control plate fixed on 'the key plug and'interengageable with one of said disks, said control plate having a shoulder in the periphery thereof, a dial fixed onthe key plug and operable to rotate the plug and the control plate lto set and unset said disks, and mechanism enabling the lock to be operated either by the'dial or a key, said mechanism comprising a connector plate rotatablymounted between the lock and the control plate, said connector plate having a central opening for passage of the key to the lock and diametrically opposed cam shaped openings, pins on the lock extending in the cam shaped openplate, a spring controlled detent pivotally mounted on the connector plate and engaged with the shoulder of the control plate when 'said disks are set, and a cam on the control plate for disconnectingl the spring coni trolled detent therefrom Whenrthe combination disks are unset.
6; In combination with a spring actuating lock bolts, a key plug through which a key may be inserted to rotate the plug and unlock the bolts, and combination means mounted on the key plug, of a dial fixed on the key plug to rotate it and set said means, a plate between said means and the bolts, bolt unlocking connection between the plate and the bolts, and a device on the plate for connecting it with the key plug when saidmeans is set, to thereby unlock the bolts with said dial.
7. In combination with a lock having a pair of opposed spring vimpelled bolts, a key plug through which a key may be inserted to rotate the plug and unlock the bolts, and combination disks mounted' on the key plug, of a dial fixed on the keyV plug to rotate it thereby to set and unset said disks, a, plate between the permutation means .and the bolts, bolt unlocking connection between the plate and the bolts, a device on the plate for connecting it with the key plug when said disks are set, whereby to unlock the lbolts withA said dial, and means fordisconnecting said device from the key plug when said disks are unset, whereby to unlock the bolt with a key instead of with the dial.
