6 Claims. (01. 3 41) 4' The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in electric razors, or shavers, of the type comprising a head including coacting stationary and reciprocating cutters, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means for retaining the whiskers as they are cut, thus preventing said whiskers from falling on the operator or on the friction bearing surfaces of the razor head and causing excessive wear.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a whisker or beard retaining means of the aforementioned character which is adapted to be mounted directly on the reciprocating cutter for operation therewith.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an electric razor of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, and which may be manufactured at low cost,
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing an electric razor equipped with the present invention being emptied.
Figure 2 is a view principally in vertical section through the head portion of the razor.
. Figure 3 is a View principally in vertical section through the reciprocatin' cutter, showing the whisker or beard retaining means thereon.
Figure 4 is an elevational view of the whisker or beard retaining means.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of the recipro cating cutter, showing a modification of the invention mounted thereon.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral l designates an electric razor or shaver comprising a head portion which is designated generally by reference numeral 2. The head 2 includes a stationary, tubular, outer cutter 3 having mounted therein a tubular reciprocating cutter 4. A motor driven lever 5 actuates the reciprocating cutter 4.
Plugs 6 of suitable material close the ends of the reciprocating cutter 4 for retaining the beard therein. The plugs 6 comprise enlarged outer portions 1 providing shoulders 8 for abutting engagement with the ends of the reciprocating cutter 4.
The plugs 6 further include, on their inner ends, apertured ears 9. A coil spring ID has its ends connected to the ears 9 for yieldingly securing the plugs 6 in position in the end portions of the reciprocating cutter 4. One of the plugs 6 further includes, on its outer end, a thumb knob II the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
It is thought that the manner in which the invention functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the plugs 6, which move with the reciprocating cutter 4, close the ends of said reciprocating cutter in a manner to retain the beard therein. When it is desired to empty the reciprocating cutter 4, one of the plugs 6 is removed therefrom against the tension of the coil spring l0 through the medium of the knob H. As suggested in Figure 1 of the drawings, this may be expeditiously and conveniently accomplished by engaging the thumb of the hand which holds the razor with the knob ll. When this withdrawn plug is released, it is pulled back into its respective end portion of the reciprocating cutter 4 by the coil spring ID. If desired, the other plug 6 may be,
permanently or fixedly mounted'in the reciprocating cutter 4.
In the modification illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings, plugs l2 and 13 are mounted in the end portions of the reciprocating cutter 4. The closure plug I3 is mounted for swinging movement on the reciprocating cutter 4 through the medium of a spring hinge I4. A thumb piece [5 is fixed on the outer end of the closure plug l3.
Through the medium of the thumb piece IS, the plug I3 may be conveniently swung outwardly on the spring hinge l4 to open position with the hand which holds the razor. After the reciproeating cutter 4 has been emptied, the plug I3 is released and the spring hinge l4 immediately returns same to closed position.
It is believed that the many advantages of an electric razor embodying the present; invention will be readily understood, and although preferred forms of the device as are illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In an electric razor comprising a head including a stationary cutter and a tubular reciprocating cutter operable therein, means cutter operable therein, a removable closure for I one end of the reciprocating cutter, and a spring operatively connected to said closure for yieldingly securing same in closed position.
4. In an electric razor comprising a head including a stationary cutter and a reciprocating cutter operable therein, closure plugs engaged in the end portions of the reciprocating cutter and 20 operable therewith, one of said plugs being removable, and a spring operatively connected to said one plug for yieldingly securing same in closed position.
5. In an electric razor comprising a head including a stationary cutter and a substantially tubular reciprocating cutter operable therein, closure plugs mounted in the end portions of the reciprocating cutter and operable therewith, and a tensioned spring mounted longitudinally in the reciprocating cutter and having its ends connected to the plugs.
6. In an electric razor comprising a head including a stationary cutter and a substantially tubular reciprocating cutter operable therein, closure plugs mounted in the end portions of the reciprocating cutter, and a spring hinge pivotally connecting one of the closure plugs to the reciprocating cutter.
