The cover is perforated as shown at 25 and has integral therewith a recessed strip 26 which extends partially around the periphery of the opening 25, and which is provided with holes to accommodate the screws 24. By this construction, the screws 24 securely hold the cover to this end of the base 3.
The strip 26 has a protruded portion 21 which is integral therewith and which is offset below the bottom of the strip to act as an upper guide for the bolt end IT, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The aperture 25 is closed by a member 28 which may be glass or any other brittle substance that can easily be broken by a sharp blow of a hamber. The glass 28 is held in the under rabbeted portion of a ring 29 which rests upon the strip 26 and also upon a protruded portion 30 of the cover top 5. The glass, therefore, is securely held between the tongue of the rabbet portion of the ring 29 and the strip 26 and also between the ring and the protrusion 38. Fixed to the underside of the ring 29, preferably integral therewith, is a trunnion-likeelement 3|, having a cross pin 32 therebetween and fixed thereto, note Fig. 5. Across the underside of the ring is provided an offset tongue-like portion 33 which is integral therewith and adapted to slide ,under the top 5, as shown. In order to place the ring and its glass in the opening 25 of the cover, it is first necessary to slide the portion 33 beneath the periphery of the opening.
Fixed to the base plate 3' are trunnion- like supports 34 and 35 having pins 36 and 31 respectively as shown, see Figs. 2 and 5. These trunnions are adapted to receive a latching device such as the one indicated by 38 which has a hole to receive either pin 36 or 31 depending upon which trunnion it is desired to place the latch.
, lhe top of the latch device terminates in a hook like end 39 to snugly engage the pin 32. This latching device also has an offset portion 48 to be engaged by compression spring 4|. Both inner sides of the trunnions 34 and 35 have slightly rounded recesses 42 and 43 respectively to provide a track to hold the spring 4|. When the ring 29 is latched to the detent as shown clearly in Fig. 5, it can not be released without first breaking the glass.
By having the two trunnions 34 and 35, the ring 23 may be turned around in the opening 25 of the cover so that any reading placed on the outside thereof can be arranged in proper upright position so as to be clearly read. The reading matter on the outside of the ring may include the following: In case of fire, at the top thereof, and Break glass, at the bottom thereof. This clearly indicates how the door, to which the lock is attached, canbe opened.
In order to resiliently float the bolt l4 upon the plate 3 so that it can reciprocate between the guides 2| and 22, a semi-cylindrical bossed portion 44 is placed upon the plate 3 as shown, note Fig. 2, and it is preferably integral with the plate. Both ends of the bore of the element 44 are open, but the central part thereof has a thickened wall portion 45 to provide shoulders and to act as spring stops. In opposite ends of the bore are compression springs 46 and 41. The spring 46 continually urges the tongue I3 outwardly toward the right in Fig. 2, beyond the end of the plate 3. The spring 4'! lies between the stop 45 and a shoulder 48 of a cam pin or lunger 49 which is configurated as shown best in Fig. 4. A piston-like portion 49' snugly ento the sides of the bore.

A stabilizer pin 50 extends from the opposite end of the position 49' and is concentric with the spring 41 and the bore. The push pin 5! engages the inner side of the end plate I! of the bolt and continually urges the bolt away from the keeper 2.
The cylindrical element 44 has at one end thereof a conical shaped boss 52 which extends upwardly to a position substantially on a. plane with the underside of the glass 28. This boss has a bore 53 centrally thereof to snugly receive a round pointed lock pin 54. The pin 54 has a recess 55 elongated as shown and deep enough to receive a cross pin 56 which has its ends fixed This recess permits the pin to reciprocate vertically within certain predetermined limits and is so arranged that the upper end of the pin 54 can be in contact with the underside of the glass 28 while its pointed end is resting upon the surface of the push pin Whenever the glass 28 is broken, the pin 54 is free to rise and is forced upwardly by the cam surface of the element 49 because of the compressed conditon of the spring 41, see Fig. 2. This action causes the push pin 5| to thrust the bolt [4 to the left, to the position shown in Fig. 6. The tongue i3, therefore, retracts from the keeper 2 allowing the door to which the lock is attached, to be opened.
In order to control the bolt of the look so that it may be opened without breaking the glass and also so that it may be permanently locked even though the glass may be broken, the cover I is provided with a conical like boss 51, note Fig. '7, which has a bore 58 to receive a cylinder key locking mechanism59 which may be termed the auxiliary lock. The particular cylinder lock emplayed i of little moment so'long that it is operable and adapted to turn axially with respect to the bore 58 when released by key or other means such as a dial control.
The bottom of the lock has a triangular slot 68 diametrically across it to receive a bent up portion 6| of an arm 62 configurated as shown. Two legs of the arm, 63 and64 are bored to receive screws 65 and 66 which engage threaded bores 61 in the cylinder lock. By'this arrangement, the arm 62 will swing with the lock 59 when it i rotated. The cylinder lock is provided with the usual keyhole 68 to receive a key, not shown. The arm 62 may be swung to the neutral position, as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1, so that the tongue of the bolt is free to leave the keeper when the glass 28 is broken. The arm may also be turned to the position shown in Fig. 6 so as to hold the bolt from the keeper. The rounded end of the arm act against the bar l8 of the bolt when the lock 58 is turned to open the main lock. The arm may, however, be placed as shown in Fig. 9 so as to force the tongue l3 into the keeper. If left in this position, the arm I will prevent opening of the look even though the claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

bolt slidable in a guideway on the plate under the cover, the bolt having a tongue to enter and bolt and a second spring for forcing the boltaway from the keeper, a cam'surface on the campin, a lock-pin engaging a lower portion of the cam surface and the underside of the breakable plate, said lock-pin adapted to move toward the plate when it is broken to release the cam-pin and force the bolt from the keeper to release the door and allow it to be opened.
2. In a lock device having a base and cover adapted to be fastened to a door, a chamber under the cover havin means to provide a guideway, a bolt slidably positioned in thetguideway, a tongue fixed to the bolt and adapted to be protracted from the chamber and retracted into the chamber, a first spring continuously urging the bolt in one direction to protract the tongue from the chamber, a cam-pin having a part thereof in contact with a portion of the bolt, a second and stronger spring urging the calm-pin in a direction opposite to the force direction of the first spring,

The device recited in claim 2 wherein the bolt is provided with a pair of spaced apart cross-bars, a lock attached to the cover and having a key controlled rotary part thereof extending into the chamber, an arm fixed to the rotary part and positioned between the said bars, said arm pressing against one of the bars to move the a bolt when turned in onedirection, said arm preventing any movement of the bolt when the longitudinal axisof the arm is parallel with the longitudinal axis ofrthe bolt.
