3 Claims: (Cl. 24-73) This invention relates to clips. More particularly, it relates to a specific form of clip adapted for anchoring a hollow channel-shaped molding having inturned flanges to a sheet metal panel.
The clip of the present invention is primarily designed for anchoring a channel-shaped molding strip having inturned flanges in predetermined position on a sheet metal panel in such a manner that the molding strip is permitted to substantially overhang the marginal edge of the panel surface and yet at the same tim be retained in rig d predetermined position.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a clip which is adapted for mounting on. a sheet metal panel adjacent the marginal edge thereof. which clip is provided with means adapted to engage the marginal edge of the panel in order to obtain rotative movement of the clip with respect to the panel on which it is mounted.
Still further, the present invention conteme plates the provision of a clip construction in which the portion of the clip engaging the mold ing strip is constructed in such a way that it is adapted to engage both sides of one of the flanges of the molding in order that one side of the molding may be completely and firmly supported irrespective of the panel With which the clip is associated.
Many other objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following specification and the drawing relating thereto.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 illustrate an assembly of a sheet metal panel or frame member, a hollow channel-shaped melding having inturned flanges and a specific form of clip embodying the improvemenis of the present invention used for anchoring the molding in predetermined position. with respect to the panel.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the specific form of clip illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevaticnal view of the clip construction shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the clip shown in the preceding figures of the drawing.
With more particular reference to the drawin in Figure 1, a section of paneling 5 is shown which may comprise a hollow, tubular sill member as illustrated or may simply be a single flat section of paneling having a marginal edge 6.
The improved clips of the present invention are designed and intended for anchoring a chanrel-shaped molding strip 1 having inturned flanges 8 and 9 in predetermined position along the marginal edge of the paneling 5 in such a manner that a substantial proportion of the molding strip projects beyond the marginal edge 6 of the paneling to which the molding strip is attached.
It will be readily appreciated that in a construction of this general character, it is essential to provide means for engaging both sides of the flange 9 of the molding inasmuch as this flange must of necessity be supported entirely independently of the panel.
The specific clip construction illustrated comprises a single integral sheet metal stamping in having an aperture 13 therein adapted to receive a bolt l2. Bolt 12 is adapted to pass through a complemental aperture in the paneling 5 and receive a nut I 4, the bolt I2 and nut 14 serving to positively anchor the clip construction in predetermined position with respect to the panel.
At the lateral sides of the clip I, lugs iii are rovided which are bent downwardly and, as is seen in Figure 1, the rear side edges of the lugs I5 are adapted to engage th marginal edge of the paneling 5, thereby precluding any possibility of any rotative movement of the clip ID with respect to the paneling after the clip is mounted in predetermined position therein.
It is likewise seen that these downwardly extending lugs l5, together with the surface of the clip 10, serve to provide members of angle section which serve to provid a rigid support for the molding strip which the clip serves to mount.
The inner edge of the clip I0 is provided with a central upturned cam surface lug l6 and a pair of spaced spring fingers ii. The lug I6 is adapted, as is seen in Figure 1, to engage the marginal edge of the inturned flange 8 of the molding strip 1 and constantly urge the same into flush engagement with the surface of the paneling 5. The spring fingers ll serve to provide cam surfaces which facilitate spreading of the flanges of the molding strip to permit the molding strip to be snapped over the clip to mount the molding strip in position and it i similarly seen that the extreme ends of these spring fingers I! serve to constitute safety catches which tend to preclude the possibility of removal of the molding strip once the same has been snapped into predetermined position.
On the opposite side, the clip is similarly provided with a pair of spring fingers l8, whose construction and function are substantially the same as the spring fingers I'I just described, and a similar cam surface lug l9, similar in construction to the cam surface lug I6, described above.
It will be seen, however, that the cam surface lug l9 engages the inturned flange 9 of the molding strip 1 and instead of forcing this flange into flush engagement with the surface of the panelin-g, forces the flange of the molding strip into flush engagement with the upper surface of the body portion of the clip, thereby permitting the mounting of this marginal edge of the molding at a point substantially spaced from the marginal edge of the paneling.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the above described embodiment of the invention is merely illustrative of one specific form of clip embodying the improvements of the invention. It will be appreciated that a clip embodying all of the above improvements may be provided which would include as an integral part thereof means for anchoring the clip to the panel thereby dispensing with the nut and bolt assembly used for anchoring the specific form of clip shown. It will be similarly appreciated that the specific form of clip illustrated in the drawin and described above is particularly adaptable to any installation where it is desired to support one portion of the molding in position spaced from the marginal edge of the supporting panel.
As is conventional in clip constructions of this general character, assemblies such as have been described above are usually employed for the purpose of mounting a molding strip of considerable length in predetermined position with respect to a panel of considerable extent. Consequently, it is conventional to employ a relatively large number of clips identical to that described above for mounting a single molding strip and these clips may be anchored in position at suitable intervals along the panel to which the molding strip is to be attached.
In assembly of the construction described above, a plurality of these clips may be anchored to the panel and the molding snapped into position thereon. The spring fingers l1. and I8 will serve to spread the flanges 8 and 9 of the molding strip and the cam surfaced lugs l and I!) serve to force the molding strip into predetermined position with respect to the surface of the 5 panel 5 and with respect to the surface of the Clip Hi.
What is claimed is:
1. A clip for securing together a sheet metal panel and a channel shaped molding strip com 10 prising a body portion having inturned flanges along the side thereof adjacent one end of the body portion. out-turned cam portions formed on opposite end edges of said body portion, and spring fingers having their end edges directed toward the end edges of said cam portions and disposed beside said cam portions.
2. A clip for securing together a sheet metal panel and a channel shaped molding strip comprising a body portion having inturned flanges along the sides thereof adjacent one end of the clip, said inturned flanges terminating between the opposite end edges of said body portion to provide shoulders, out-turned cam portions formed on opposite end edges of said body portion, and spring fingers having their end edges directed toward the end edges of said cam portions and disposed beside said cam portions.
3. A clip for securing together a sheet metal panel and a channel shaped molding strip comprising a body portion having inturned flanges along the sides thereof adjacent one end of the body portion, said inturned flanges terminating between the opposite end edges of said body portion to provide shoulders, out-turned cam portions formed on opposite end edges of said body portion and located centrally of said body portion. and a spring finger disposed at each side of said out-turned cam portions and having its end edge directed toward the end edge of the adjacent cam portion.
