Description

Sept. 21, 1943.
H. B. cRANsl-IAW SPUTUM CUP med oct. a,l 1942 Patented Sept. 21, 1943 SPUTUM CUP Harold B. Cranshaw, Newton, Mass., assignor to Burnitol Manufacturing Company, Charlestown, Mass., a corporation of Maine Application October 8, 1942, Serial No. 461,273
4 Claims. (Cl. 4-271) 'Ihis invention relates to receptacles of the type made from sheet material, such, for example, as sputum cups and the like containers which are intended to be destroyed after use.
In articles of this character it is essential that the receptacle be provided with a suitable cover which is normally closed and which may be conveniently opened, and it is the principal object of the present invention to provide a receptacle of this type, having a normally closed cover member which is hinged to the receptacle without the use of fastening means other than those constituting an integral part of the cover and receptacle, and which is constructed so that the cover may be conveniently opened by the hand or nnger holding the receptacle. v
Another object is to provide a receptacle Wherein the cover is integral with the cup, both parts being formed with complementary interlocking means so designed that the receptaclemay be quickly erected and assembled so that the parts are not subject to accidental separation.
Further objects will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which a cup embodying the present invention is formed; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective of the cup and cover in assembled relation.
The embodiment herein shown comprises a cup C formed from a single piece of berboard or the like sheet material and provided with an integral hinge I-I which supports a cover C formed integral with or adapted to be joined to the hinge so as to be pivotally supported in normally closed position, both the hinge and cover members being provided with interengageable parts constructed and arranged to provide an interlock preventing separation of the parts.
The hinge section H is formed with locking tongues having pointed ends 2 l, and the cover C' is formed with lateral cut-outs or recesses 22, the length of which is somewhat shorter than that of the outer edges of tongues 26. When the cup and cover are assembled as shown in Fig. 2, the tongue 2U may be bent or exed upwardly into the recess 22 so that their pointed ends 2| overlie the adjacent edges of the cover and thus provide an interlock eifective to prevent separation of the parts.
It will be noted that the supporting hinge is integral with the side wall and that the cover and hinge are formed with integral interlocking parts which are effective to hold the cover in normally closed position and prevent separation of the parts. It will also be noted that the marginal portions of the cover overlying the supporting hinge provide a lever-'like handle by means of which the cover may be conveniently swung open when thecup is held in the hand.
'From the foregoing it will be evident that a characteristic feature of the invention `consists in that the cover is held against the side wall extension at each edge of the cover, thereby maintaining the two parts in close juxtaposition throughout the entire Width of the cover.
While I have shown and described one concrete embodiment of the invention, it is to'be understood that this disclosure is for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in shape, proportion and arrangement of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalent elements for those herein shown and described may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A receptacle of the class described comprising a cup having a side wall formed with an integral extension including inner and outer sections, the inner section providing a, supporting hinge and the outer section being bent upon the inner section to provide a cover for the cup, said sections having at each lateral edge interengaging integral parts constructed and arranged to provide an interlock eective to hold the cover in normally closed position 'and prevent separation of the parts, said parts comprising a shoulder at the lateral edge of one of said parts and a tongue on the other part overlapping said shoulder.
2. A receptacle of the class described comprising a cup having a side wall formed with an integral extension including an inner section providing a supporting hinge and an outer section bent upon the inner section to provide a cover for the cup, the inner section having locking tongues at its lateral edges and the outer section having parts shaped to accommodate the ends of said tongues, said parts comprising shoulders at the lateral edges of the outer section and said tongues overlapping the shoulders.
3. A receptacle of the class described comprising a cup having a side wall formed with an integral extension including inner and outer sections, the inner section providing a supporting f hinge and the outer section being bent upon the inner section to provide a cover for the cup, said sections having interengaging integralparts conhinge and the outer section being bent upon the inner section to provide a cover for the cup, said sections having interengaging integral parts constructed and arranged to provide an interlock effective to hold the cover in normally closed p0- sition and prevent separation of the parts, said parts comprising a tongue on the inner section overlapping the outer section, the tongue projecting in non-overlapping nelationship to the inner section when it is in overlapping relationship with the outer section.
