Speaking more specifically the invention per t i s to the provision of a file consisting of a multiple of separable jacket-holding means adapted to be removably assembled in containers in such'a manner as to permit visible exposure of the entire group of indexed upperends of the panels so assembled. I It is an object of this invention to improve upon means for indexing and filing document or written or printed data by providing, in conjunction with a'novel mounting means therefor, a com-- bined record bearer and document container consisting ofa jacket or casing quadrangular in cross section with open ends, there being space upon its outer surface for the reception of written lines and space within its interior for containing removable sheets and cards. i 7
Another object of the invention is the provi-. sion for'supporting the aforesaid jackets, a panel specially constructed with a view to supporting the jackets in an improved manner, said panel consisting of a base plate carrying longitudinally extending rods on which said jackets are slidably mounted in a detachable manner, the assembling of the labeled jackets uponsaid panel by means of said rods resulting in the alinement of the plane of the combined exterior label holding sur faces of the tops of said jackets within a plane adjacent to and parallel with the face of the supporting-panel, thus bringing said index lines into a visible, readable position in relation to an observer of the face of the panel. v
A further object'of the invention is attained by combining the labeled jackets and the rods which support them in such a manner that the uppermost jacket of each panel, upon being moved upwardly tov the limit of its travel, is automatically deflected upwardly and backwardly and then is stopped in a position whereinthe plane ofthe exterior label-holding surfaceof said uppermost jacket is thereafter held at a right angle to the-plane of the supporting panel and in a position wherein the index line of said jacket overlies the top end of the panel in a visible; readable, position.

As shown in Fig. 2 the lower jacket of the pack l2 contains a sheet 43 having a colored outer part 44 which is angularly deflected to cause it to underlie the color display window 42 (Fig. 1). Variously colored sheets may be inserted into other jackets, as indicated by con ventional color-indicating shading in the color windows 41. -A 'code of colofcintbiriat'ions can be used as an aid to the observer to determine at a glance the contents of a given jacket.

Each attached jacket has a flat, rectangular smrace along its free edge, the width of said surface being'equal to -the thickness of the fi-lled jacket. Upon this surface is inscribed an irrdex-ing line -45 designative of the 'contents of the jacket. This index line is clearly readable whether the jackets are in a pendant, collapsed position as shown in the lower ,pack 13 inF igs, l and -2, or when positioned in a horizontal manner as in the-central,filled pack 4-2, ;or when deflected upwardly as in the pack l t. It will ;readily be seen that this occurs as a result of the parallelogram formed by the four walls of -the open-ended jackets, and that the jacket, when swingably attached to an-upstanding panel, will always maintainin a vertical, readable position the index line '45 throughout all angular adjustmen-ts -to which the jacket may be swung.

It is to be understood that the backwardly directed arm it at the upper end of each wirerun 8 and 9, when made by a bending machine, will have its inner angle slightly rounded where it joins the main run. Hence when the upper edge portionof the narrow binding strip 40 of the ascending jacket encounters this rounded part it will be backwardly deflected and further upward pressure against the attached part of the jacket whether by the next underlying jacket or directly by the hand of the operator, will advance its said binding strip toward a horizontal position in respect to its width, causing said binding strip to swing the jacket to which it is attached to the upstanding position as shown in the upper portions of Figs. 1 and 2. And it is obvious that when the jacket is swung forwardly and forced downwardly to return it to its original position its binding strip will retrace its course in relation to the wire.
What is claimed is:
1. In a jacket file of the kinddescribed, an upstanding panel, a pair of parallel spaced apart retaining strips mounted upon said panel in an overlying spaced relation to the face thereof, each of said strips having at its upper end a backwardly deflected portion which loosely ex.- tends through a hole in said panel which is spaced considerably below the upper edge of said panel, said backwardly deflected portions being united behind the panel by a cross run, the free ends of said strips being anchored to a lower part'of the panel, a plurality of separate jackets, each of which has a straight edge portion which is slidably attached to said strips to slide along them to and from an adjacent relation to the upper end of said panel, said attached edge portion having a width substantially equal to the offset from the face of the panel of the upper end portion of each of said strips, and means extending through the attached edge portion of each jacket and underlying said strips to automatically backwardly deflect said jacket when it arrives at the upper limit of its travel.
2. In a jacket file of the kind described, an upstanding panel, a pair of parallel spaced apart retaining strips mounted upon said panel in an overlying spaced relation to the face thereof,
each of said strips having at its upper end a backwardly deflected portion which loosely extends through a hole in said panel which is spaced considerably below the upper edge of said panel, said backwardly deflected portions being united behind the panel by a cross run, the free ends of said strips being anchored to a lower part of the panel, a plurality of separate file jackets eachhaving a back edge portion whereby it is swingably and slidably attached to said retaining strips, said jackets each being of a slab-like shape to enable them to be grouped together in theirv mounted position in a superimposed flatwise contacting relation, the aforementioned backwardly deflected runs of said strips forming abutments whereby at the end of the upward travel of an attached pack of said jackets the uppermost jacket is flipped from a horizontal to an upstanding position with its back face abutting against the upper portion of the front face of the supporting panel.
3. In a jacket file of the kind described, an
elongated panel'h'aving throughit two apertures located inan end portion of saidpanel and on a line extending transversely thereof, said apertures being on opposite sides of the midlength of the panel and substantially equidistant from its side edges, a wire consisting of two main runs extending lengthwise of the panel, said runs being continued at their upper ends .as backwardly directed arms which extend, loosely through said apertures, the central portion of the wire uniting the back ends of said arms, said main wire runs being attachedto the lower ,portion of the panel and being swingable outwardly from the panel as far as the lengths of said wire arms will allow, a data-containing jacket of a slab-like shape, and-means carried by an edge portion of said jacket to attach it to said main wire runs in a slidable swingable manner, saidjacket being slidable upwardly along said main wire runs to their upper ends and then backwardly swingable to an upstanding position wherein .it restsupon said arms and its back side abuts against the upper part of the front face of said panel. 7
l. In an indexed file, an upstanding vertical support,a jacket having walls of semi-rigid sheet material disposed in a quadrilateral relation to each other, and means for attaching said jacket to one side edge of said support to be swung through a'vertical plane, the free side edge of said jacket having index matter upon its face, said face lying in a substantially vertical plane at whatever position'the jacket is swung in relation to said upstanding support.
5. In an index flle, an upstanding supporting panel, a pair of parallel, spaced apart longitudinally extending retaining strips carried by said panel in a spaced, overlying relation to one of its faces, -the lower extremity of each of said stripsbeing constructed and arranged to grip the lower edge of said panel, the upper extremity of each of-said strips being backwardly deflected in a short run and extending through an aperture spaced considerably down from the top of said panel, said short runs being in turn laterally deflected to maintain each short run in its aperture, -a plurality of data-containing jackets each slidably fastened to both of said strips, and a tierod bridging the space between said strips and having-its end portions slidably attached to them dividing said 'jacets into groups.
'6. The subject matter of claim 5 and, said laterally deflected portions of said short runs being united to form the midlength portion of the retaining strips considered as a wholeand said tie rod consisting of a wire having end curls whereby it is attached to said strips.
'7. Ina self-labeling visibly indexed jacket file, an upstanding back panel, a pair of parallel spaced apart retaining strips mounted upon said panel in an overlying spaced relation to the face thereof, a plurality ofseparate flle jackets each of quadrangular cross section and each of which vried by each said jacket and co-operating with said retaining strips to deflect bodily the uppermost of said flle jackets when it arrives at its uppermost position on the panel.
8. A jacket file according to claim 7, wherein locking means is provided for detachably connecting teach idle jacket to said retaining strips.

:11]. 1A self-labeling visibly indexed jacket file comprising a me jacket support, a plurality of separate jackets for containing removable sheets and cards, and means to :slidably attach said jackets to said support, said means including a plurality of retaining strips upon which said jackets are individually slida'bte, said jackets each comprising elongated sheet of paper iurnished with pairs of apertures, the apertures or each pair being located adjacent to and on opposite sides of 'one or the other of said retaining strips, and a locking strip extending through a pinrallity of said paired apertures when opposite end portions of said sh'eet .O'f paper are folded inwardly so as to be superimposed one upon the other and adhered to retain each file jacket cooperanvely with said retaining strips, said :sh'eet being crea'sed whereby in its fold'ed condition :it forms an enclosure quadrangular in cross section with open ends.

In a device of the kind described, an upstanding vertical ,panel, a plurality of record carriers quadrangular in cross section, means to mount said carriers upon 'said panel in a vertically slidable manner, the free :side edge of 'each of :said carrims :lraving index matter upon its face, said means including arms projecting through apertures in'said panel and being laterally deflected in ta spaced relation to the .back side thereof to automatically swing the uppermost carrier lrom an angular relation to said panel to a parallel relation thereto when said carrier is moved to the upper limitof its travel in relation to said ipan'el.

A jacket file according to claim 3, wherein solid data-containing jacket is composed of walls of semi-rigid material disposed in a quadrilateral relation :to each iother thereby forming an enclosure =quadrangular in cross section and each angle forming the quadrangular cross section being -a right angle.

Aj'acketfile according to claim 3, wherein said data-containing jacket is composed of walls of semi-rigid materialsdisposed in a quadrilateral relation to 'each other thereby forming an enclosure quadrangular :in cross section with open ends, each angle torming the quadrangular cross section being a right angle and the free side edge -01" said jacket having index matter on its face.

A self-labeling visibly indexed jacket file comprising a file jacket support, -a plurality of open-ended jackets of quadrangular cross section for containing removable sheets and cards, means to-sl-idably attach each -of said jackets to said :file jacket support, each of said jackets having an index line along the free side edge thereof farthest from the attached .side, and means-carried by saidfile jacket support and cooperating with said slidably attaching means whereby the uppermost jacket is bodily deflected when at reaches its topmost position.
