Description

Sept. 14; 1943. I M. BRUEI-ILI 2,329,245
CALF FEEDER Filed May 22. 1941 INVENTOR. Mary 'b uek? tome y Patented Sept. 14, 1943 UNHTED STATES PATENT OFFICE ,CALF FEEDER Mary Bruehl, Mount Clemens, Mich.
I Application May 22, 1941, Serial No. 394,603 (01.119-71) 1 Claim.
This invention relates to farm apparatus and"" weig'ht of the receptacle 5, which is particularly to equipment for use on a dairy farm.
An object of the invention is to provid a device for feeding calves, so that with its use much of the handling of the animals ,now necessary under present practices may be dispensed with.
When a calf is fed by the cow it is the usual practice to take the calf to its mother at regue lar intervals. This requires a lot of handling before the calf is old enough to be weaned. As the calf increases in'size and strength it oftentimes becomes almost unmanageable. If there are numerous calves to be taken care of it becomes a chore of considerable magnitude.
With my'improved calf feeder the calves can remain intheir own quarter and can be fed with great efliciency, by an inexperienced hand or by a child.
This also permits usual manner.
Another advantage of my device is that with its use it becomes a simple matter to gradually change the calf from a liquid to a solid diet.
the cows to be milked in the With its use it is also possible to feed the calf skimmed milk, either with or without the by the device may be anchored to awall if dey with a flared rim [3.
This allows the opening of the receptacle 5 to be disposed in an angular position so that the calf can reach the interior of the receptacle more readily. a
The frame 5 is provided with means [4 wheresired. I
On the interior of the receptacle 5 is positioned thehollow fitting I5, which comprises a convex base 1'6 and an angularly disposed neck H. The base it is preferably removably secured to the bottom 18 of the receptacle 5 by means of bayonet 51017519, which engage suitable studs 20 fixed in the bottom of the receptacle 6. Th base I6 addition of other foods, such as calf meal and the like.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, reference being made from time to time tothe accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig-1 is a sectional view of a device embodyme my invention. v
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view, with parts broken away, of the device illustrated in Fig. l.
The invention resides in the particular combination and arrangement of parts.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing', it will be understoodgthat in'the embodiment herein disclosed, my device consists genis perforated, as at 2|, so that liquid may reach its interior; The .upper end of the neck I! is reduced and. flared, asat 22, and secured thereto is a soft-rubber member. 23, which is made to simulate the teat of 'a'cow. A tube 24 is fitted into the member 23 and extends to a point near the bottom of the receptacle 5, so that liquid may be drawn through it when the calf sucksonthe member 23.
On the bottom exterior of the receptacle 5, immediately beneath the fitting i5, is an electric heating element 25, which is secured to a suitable insulator 26, carried by the housing 21, the latter being held in position; by the lower ends of the studs 20, heretofore described.
The fitting I5 can readily be removed so that the'interi'or of the receptacle 5 can be washed and sterilized. In practice the fitting I5 is also removed when the calf is being taken from a purely liquid diet to a solid diet so that the transition from onediet to the other is accom ,plished with a minimum of disturbance to the erally of a receptacle 5, which is preferably-made of aluminum or other suitable-material, and supported as illustrated-and described hereinafter, by means of a framework 6, which can be made,
of pieces of angle iron secured together by any.
suitable means. The framework 6 other by cross memebrs H], II and I2. The upper cross members ['2 are disposed in an inanimals habits.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
c A calf feeding device comprising the combination of .a bowl-like member having an off center fiat portion, means including a teat simulating 'clined' position and are adapted tosupport themember angularly secured to the inside of said bowl and covering said flat portion, a heating element housing supported on the outside of said bowl and covering said flat portion, and a heat-v ing element in said housing, adapted toeapply-J heat to the said flat portion of said bowl.
