(Cl. 91-45) The present invention relates to spraying devices and more particularly to mechanisms for automatically spraying such articles as have more or less flat surfaces with thick edges or flanged vborders or rims or the like so as to coat the surfaces thereof with sprayed material such as vitreous enamel, ceramic material, synthetic enamel, asphaltic compounds for sound deadening etc.
It is particularly designed for use in an automatic reciprocating spraying machine of the type disclosed in the Bremsen et al. Patent No. 2,246,502 granted June 24, 1941, for Automatic spraying machine.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a novel sprayingdevice for automatically coating not only the upper surface of an article being moved in a given path. as on a traveling conveyor, but also the lateral or edge surface portions, such as flanges both inside and outside, by giving the spraying means movements across the line of travel of the articles in given time relation thereto so that the coating will be uniform over the whole extent of the Asprayed surfaces whether parallel to the line of reciprocation of the spraying device or at right angles thereto, by so adjusting the position of the spray nozzles of the spraying device as to havethe normal lines of spraying directed componently downwardly, laterally and forwardly or rearwardly whereby as the spraying -devic'e reciprocates across the line of travel of the articles all exposed or presented surfaces of the articles will be simultaneously sprayed and coated. In this way many of the mechanical steps or operations heretofore necessary to complete the coating of the various surfaces of an article are eliminated and the speed of production is enhanced.
More particularly the novel means comprises an upright supporting means adjustably connected to a carriage or the like which is adapted to reciprocate laterally and preferably aboidtlzie.l conveyor and its line of travel, andhav'ig at its lower end a supporting bar extending parallel to the line of travel of the conveyor. To this bar are connected spray gun supporting bars which are adjustable linearly of the main supporting bar, and also angularly about the main supporting bar; and to these latter spray gun supporting bars are connected the spray guns which are adjustable linearly of and angularly about the spray gun supporting bars. In this way each gun may have universal adjustment to direct the spray from each gun componently forwardly or rearwardly, laterally and downwardly toward the traveling article being sprayed and while the spraying means is generally reciprocated crosswise and above the travel of the articles on the conveyor, whereby all surfaces exposed above the conveyor will be sprayed simultaneously.
In the case of a hollow article having perimey tral flanges extending upwardly both the inside and outside walls of the flanges will be sprayed because 'of the particular adjusted positions of the spray guns. it will be understood that the invention comprehends the use of anyother number of spray guns such as merely one spray gun or three or more spray guns, if and when desired, by having, if necessary, more spray gun supporting bars clamped to the main supporting bar.

Referring more in detail to the drawings the embodiment chosen to illustrate the invention is shown in association with a part of an automatic reciprocating machine comprising a crossbeam I carrying a chain 2 operating over sprocket wheels .-/ro'ta'tably carried by the beam. Along the beam I reciprocates a frame 4 by way of wheels 5 along a track Bcarried by the beam. At a suitable point, as below the frame 4, is a crosshead 'l having upright hollow bars or tubes 8 adjustably mounted and clamped in the frame 4 depending on the height desired for the spray guns over the traveling articles.
Depending from the crosshead l is a bracket 9 having at its lower end a sleeve I0 adapted to be fixed by way of a setscrew II to an intermediate part of a main supporting bar or tube I2. The bar I2 is elongated and at any predetermined point along each of its free end portions While two spray guns are shownv is clamped a split collet type of clamp I3 held in clamping condition by a clamping screw I4. Each clamp I3 has a socket I5 for slidably holding a clamping member or block I6 having an apertured extension Il through which extends a spray gun supporting bar I8. Around the block I6 and seating on the body of the collet clamp I3 is a saddle piece I9 having a curved seat or saddle for the seating of the supporting bar I8. The clamping block has a threaded socket in which the threaded end 2i o the screw Id operates.
By turning the screw I4 in the loosening direction the clamping extension I? may rise and release the bar I8 so that it can be adjusted linearly and angularly, and at the same time the pressure of the saddle piece i2 is also released to permit the opening of the jaws of the collet clamp i3 about the main bar i2 to permit linear and angular adjustment of the collet clamp along and about the main supporting bar i2. An opposite turning of the screw iii will cause a closing or clamping of the collet jaws on the main supporting bar I2 and also a drawing-in of the saddle block to clamp the gun supporting bar I8 to the saddle 20.
The crosshead l has a hub 22 in which reciprocates a connecting rod 23 operated by suitable mechanism (not shown) on the crossbeam I, as disclosed in the aforesaid patent, the lower end of the rod 23 being connected to a cam 2d for operating against a roller 25 carried by a Valve stem 26 of an air control valve 2li suitably supported in the bracket 9. This air valve may be O the type shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 in the Green Patent No. 2,264,521 granted December 2, 194i.
Adjustably secured, both angularly and linearly, to the free ends oi the supporting bars i8 are spray guns 28 having suitable apertures for receiving the bars i8 and setscrews 29 for securing the guns in adjusted position. The spray guns used are of the diaphragm operated type such as disclosed in the Harrison et al. Patent No. 2,266,365 granted December i6, 1941.
Extending downwardly ahrough the tubes B are hoses 3u and 3i for supplying respectively coating material and air to the spray guns. The lower end of the material tube 3u is connected to a T-tting 32 from which run hoses 33 to connections 34 at the gun nozzles. The lower end of the air nozzle 3l is connected t0 a 'T-tting 35 from which run air hoses 36 by way of conections 3l forming part of the guns and leading to the valve controlled air passage in the guns. From the T-tting 35 air passes by way of a connection 38 to the cam controlled valve 2'I. From the valve 21 the air passes by way of a connection 39 to a T-fitting 40 from 'which run hoses di to connections 42 on the guns and communicating with the diaphragm chambers of the guns.
In the operation of the device the chain 2 causes a lateral reciprocation transversely above the conveyor and the articles carried by it. During the reciprocation the connecting rod 23 moves downwardly and remains downwardly until the end of the reciprocation whereby the cam 24 acts against the roller 25 to open the air valve 2l. The air as it passes from the air valve 21 passes by way of hoses 4I to the diaphragm chambers of the spray guns. The air then moves the diaphragms of the spray guns first causing the air valves in the spray guns to open and to permit air passing by way of hoses 36 to pass to the air nozzle portion of the spray guns, and then the diaphragms act to open the needle Valves in the spray guns to permit the passage of the coating material from the hoses 33 to and through the material orifices of the spray nozzles, all of which is well understood from the Harrison et al. patent referred to above.
From the above it will be apparent that the position of each spray gun may be universally adjusted so that each spray gun may project the coating stream or spray not only downwardly toward the upper surface of the article being sprayed but also at an angle laterally and either forwardly or rearwardly so that the same stream can spray any of the upright wall surface portions of the article such as the inner and outer vertical walls of flanges or similar rim portions of the article.
While we have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodiment o the invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but comprehends other constructions, arrangements of. parts, details, features, and the like, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus disclosed the invention, we claim:
l. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured to said main supporting bar, and a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar.
2. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar linearly and ang'ularly adjustably secured to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured to said main supporting bar, a spray gun linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said auxiliary supporting bar, and means for securing said spray gun to said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position.
3. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar adjustably secured to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting 'bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, means for securing said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position to said main supporting bar, and a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar.
4. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar adjustably secured to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, means for securing said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position to said main supporting bar, a spray gun linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said auxiliary supporting bar, and means for securing said spray gun to said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position.
5. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said supporting member, means for securing said main supporting bar in adjusted position to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured to said main supporting bar, and a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar.
6. A spraying mechanism comprising a recipro- 2,328,448 l cable carrier having a supporting member, a
main supporting vbar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said supporting member, means for securing said main supporting bar in adjusted position to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, means for securing said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted Vposition to said main supporting bar, and a' spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar.
7. A. spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier havinga supporting member,amain supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said supporting member, means for securing said main supporting bar in adjusted position to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured to said main supporting bar, a spray gun linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said auxiliary supporting bar, and means for securing said spray gun to said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position. l
8. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said supporting member, means for securing said main supporting bar in adjusted position to said supporting member, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, means for securing said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position to said main supporting bar, a spray gun linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said auxiliary supporting bar, and means for securing said spray gun to said auxiliary supporting bar in adjusted position.
9. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a supporting member, a main supporting bar angularly and linearly adjustable relative to said supporting member, means for securing said main supporting bar in adjusted position to said supportingy member, a spray gun supporting bar angularly and linearly adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, means for securing said spray gun supporting bar in adjusted position to said main supporting bar, a spray gun angularly and linearly adjustable relative to said spray gun supporting bar,
and means for securing said spray gun 'in adjusted position to said spray gun supporting bar.
10. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a depending arm provided at its lower end with a clamp means, a main supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured in said clamp means and having a free end portion extending beyond the clamp means, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said free end portion of said main supporting bar, a clamp means adjustably secured to said free end portion of said main supporting bar and to an end portion of said auxiliary supporting bar, and a spray gun adjustably secured to the other end portion of said auxiliary supporting bar.
11. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a crosshead extending in the path of reciprocation of the carrier, an arm rigid with said crosshead and extending downwardly therefrom, a clamp means at the free end of said arm, a main supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustably secured in said clamp means and extending transversely of said crosshead, an auxiliary supporting bar linearly and angularly adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, a clamp means adjustably secured to said main supporting bar and to said auxiliary supporting bar, and a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar.
12. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a crosshead extending in the path of reciprocation of the carrier, an arm rigid with said crosshead and extending downwardly therefrom, a clamp means at the free end of said arm, a main supporting bar adjustably secured in said clamp means and extending transversely of said crosshead, an auxiliary supporting bar adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, a clamp means adjustably secured to said main supporting bar and to said auxilitary supporting bar, a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar, a connecting rod vertically reciprocable in said crosshead and having a cam at its lower end, an air control valve carried by saidarm and having a stem operatively associated with said cam, and an air duct connected to said control valve and to said spray gun.
13. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a crosshead extending in th'e path of reciprocation of the carrier, an arm rigid with said crosshead and extending downwardly therefrom, a clamp means at the free end of said arm, a main supporting bar adjustably secured in said clamp means and extending transversely of said crosshead, an auxiliary supporting bar adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, a clamp means adjustably secured to said main supporting bar and to said auxilitary supporting bar, a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar, iittings carried by the crosshead, material and air ducts connected to said fittings, a material duct connected to one of said fittings and to said spray gun, an air control valve carried by said arm and connected to the other of said iitting, movable cam means carried by said crosshead and operatively associated with said control valve, and an air duct connected to said control valve and to said spray gun.

A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a crosshead extending in the path of reciprocation of th'e carrier, an arm rigid with said crosshead and extending downwardly therefrom, a clamp means at the free end of said arm, a main supporting bar adjustably secured in said clamp means and extending transversely of said crosshead, an auxiliary supporting bar adjustable relative to said main supporting bar, a clamp means adjustably secured to said main supporting bar and to said auxiliary supporting bar, a spray gun adjustably secured to said auxiliary supporting bar, a connecting rod vertically reciprocable in said crosshead and having a cam at its lower end, an air control valve carried by said arm and having a stem operatively associated with said cam, fittings carried by the crosshead, material and air ducts connected to said fittings, a material duct connected to one of said iittings and to said spray gun, and an air duct connected to said control -valve and to said spray gun.
15. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a crosshead extending in th'e path of reciprocation of the carrier, a main supporting bar extending transversely of said crosshead, means for linearly and angularly adjustably securing said main supporting bar to said crosshead, an auxiliary supporting bar extending transversely to said main supporting bar, means for linearly and angularly adjustably securing said auxiliary supporting bar to said main supporting bar, a spray gun extending transversely of said auxiliary supporting bar, and means for adjustably securing said gun to said auxiliary supporting bar.
16. A spraying mechanism comprising a reciprocable carrier having a crosshead extending in the path of reciprocation of the carrier, a main supporting bar extending transversely of said crosshead, means for adjustably securing said EYRICl GUSTAFSSON. JOHN W. BAUR.
