J. KINHART. Y Machine for Shearing Metal.
No. 232,829. Patented Oct. 5,1880.

PATENT MACHINE FOR SHEARING METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,829, dated October 5, 1880.
Application filed January 3,1880.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN KINHART, of Athens, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Shearing Metal; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the machine adjusted to shear thin iron. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the machine adjusted to shear thick iron.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine for shearing iron adapted to shop use and easily transportable, and at the same time adapted to cut various thicknesses of iron; and it consists in a heavy frame adapted to be fastened to a block or bench, and in which works a shearingknite pivoted at one end, the other end being provided with lugs which enter slots in a swinging stirrup attached to the operating-lever, whereby the relative movement of the shearing-knife is controlled.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A A is a frame provided with cars a a, for securing it to a block or bench. To the lower uprights of the frame, at b, is pivoted a shearing-knife, B, its opposite end being provided with lugs i t, for the purpose hereinafter described. In the frame the uprights between which the knife is pivoted are shorter than the other two which serve as a guide, and the knife, in descending to make a cut, passes its edge below the basepieces of the frame-work which form the resisting media.
The tops of the uprights are joined bya stout metal yoke,O, which projects beyond the taller uprights, and has pivoted in it, at d, a lever, D, which actuates the knife through the medium of a swinging link, E, provided with a series of slots and offsets, 66, for engaging the lugs i 2? on the end of knife 13. The swinging link E, being pivoted to the lever at 12, makes the lever one of the second class, the fulcrum being at d.
When thin iron is to be sheared the lugs it are placed in the lowest offsets in the swinging link, and a cut is made by moving the lever D in a comparatively short are.
If the iron to be sheared is thick iron the lugs '13 i are placed in one of the upper offsets, e e, in proportion to the thickness of iron, and the shear is made by moving the lever in an arc of about the same length.
I am aware that heretofore, in a shearingmachine, a swinging knife has been operated by a lever pivoted in the same frame with the knife and connected to the knife by a link, and I am also aware that a pair of operating-levers have been connected in a metal-punching machine by means of an adjustable link provided with recesses, and hence I do not claim such combined agencies broadly; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improvement in machines for shearing metal, the notched link or stirrup E, suspended from the actuating-lever D,jointly with the lugs i, on the end of the shear-blade B, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN KIN HART.-
