The present invention relates to windows and operating. mechanisms therefor and has particular relation to such mechanisms oi this kind operated by fluid pressure and other power devices.
Heretoi'ore window operators, used on motor vehicles, have comprised various power actuated devices including those utilizing suction available in the intake manifold 01' theengine or other sourceoi less-than-atmospheric pressure,
to raise and lower the windows, the devices being controlled by suitable means. In the case 01' suction operators, in order to prevent the unauthorized i'orcing opening of windows, means have been provided to prevent movement of the windows except under the influence of suction.
It is desirable not to apply such locking means to prevent movement in the opposite direction, since it may he wished to close a window at times when the fluid pressure differential or other source 01' power i not available, as for example it may be desired to close the window 01 an automobiie when the engine, depended upon as the source oi. power, is not running, and perhaps cannot be run by reason of some mechanical defact or the like. V
Ordinarily, however, the windows of a vehicle when fully opened are in the well of the door below or so close to the sill that they cannot be gripped with the finger so as to be raised manually.- It is an objective of the present invention to overcome this di'fliculty; to provide means for raising a window slightly, so that it may be engaged and raised by the hands at time when no power is available to raise the window.
These and other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of the typical embodimentoi the invention shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the window, window actuator, and control therefor;
Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the valve unit employed to control the actuator, with parts appearing in section; and,
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a valve actuating element.
As shown in Fig. 1 the window ii in fully opened position is in the window well formed by the inner and outer surfaces of the body or door and may have its upper edge even with or slightly below sill i2 on the bottom wall 01' the window opening. The actuating means maycomprise a cylinder i3 hinged at H to a stationary partoi the structure having the window opening, a piston l5 movable in the cylinder being eflective through piston rod it to swing bell crank lever i'l about the latters pivot Ill. The bell crank carries a roller i9 engaged in a track 2l secured to the lower edge of the window, so that upon counter-clockwise movement of the bell-crank (movement of piston to the'right) the window will be raised or closed. and upon subsequent clockwise movement of the bellcrank, the window will again be opened.

Each of the valves, which may be of any suitable type, such as'the construction shown in said application of Anton Rappl, Serial No. 383,176, may have a spring backed, manually depressible push button having a stem 23 provided with parts 23 for engaging the valve, the valves being sb arrangedthat depression of upper push button 26 ,may break prevent openingmovement of the window, i. e.,

In order to bring the window partially out of the well and above sill l2 within the grasp of the hands so that it may be raised manually, a spring I is disposed between a'fixed abutment member 42 and head 43 of a rod 44, the latter in the illustrated embodiment being mounted for sliding movement in member 42 and valve body 24, and

It will be understood that the window and operating mechanism may be of any suitable construction, including suitable counterbalancing means, if desired. The present invention provides spring means for initiating movement of th window from one terminal position, from opened position in the form shown, which may be especially advantageous in the case of a window that is not fully counterbalanced.
It will be understood further that the apparatus herein shown and described is merely illustrative of the inventive principles involved,-and that the same may be otherwise embodied without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims,
What is claimed is: I
1. In a window construction and operatin means therefor, a framing structure and a window slidably movable therein between an opened position completely within said structure and a closed position, power operated means for moving the window between said positions, spring means compresse as the window approaches one terminal position for urging reverse movement thereof upon subsequent expansion of the spring. means for preventing such expansion of the spring from a compressed condition, a. control element for the power operated means, and joint means effective upon actuation of said control element to release saidspring for expansion to raise the window above the sill should the power means fail to function.
5. In a window construction and operating means therefor, a framing structure comprising a well and an opening and a window-slidably movable therein between opened and closed posimeans therefor, a framing structure having a well and a sill and a window slidably movable therein between opened and closed positions,-

and manually operated means for releasing the latch means.
2. In a window construction and operating means therefor, a framing structure and a window slidable therein between opened and closed and spring means compressed upon the window reaching an open position for subsequent expansion to initiate movement. of the window from said open position to a position slightly above the sill upon failure of the power means, means for normally holding said spring against such expansion, and means for releasing said holding means.
7. In a window construction and operating means therefor, a structure comprising a well and a frame and a window slidably movable therein between an opened position within the well and a closed position in the frame, power operating means for the window, spring means compressed upon the window reaching an open position, a clutch permitting compressive movement of the spring means while holding the spring against expansion, and means to release saidclutch to allow expansion of the spring from compressed position to initiate movement of the window from said open position to a position where a part of the window is raised out of the well and is exposed in the frame sufliciently to be manually operate to complete the closing.
8. In a window construction and operating means therefor, a framing structure and a window slidably movable therein between opened and closed positions, power operated means for moving the window, spring means compressed upon the window reaching a terminal position,
for subsequent expansion to initiate movement of the window from said terminal position, means for normally holding said spring against such expansion, said means comprising a spring pressed rod mounted for slidable movement in 1a fixed portion of the'structure, a pair of spring pressed clutch members for holding the rod normally against slidable movement in one direction,
cam means for releasing the clutch members to allow slidable movement, and means for releasing said holding means.
9. In a window vconstruction and operating means therefor, a training structure having a well and a window slidable therein, fluid pressure operated means for moving the window between an open position in the well and a closed position relative to said framing structure, means for controlling said fluid pressure operated means, spring means operable for urging initial closing movement of the window out of thewell, and latch means releasably holding said spring means inoperative and operable torelease such spring means to so function when the fluid pressure operated means fails to operate.
