This invention relates to Weapons such as pistols, revolvers, rifles and other guns wherein compressed air or other gas is used as a propulsive medium for a projectile.
More particularly the invention relates to a compressed air cartridge for such weapons.
In weapons of the general type known as air guns or "air pistols it is common to provide a chamber permanently in or on some part'of the weapon and so connected to the barrel that a charge of compressed air may be admitted behind the projectile to propel the latter from the barrel. The repetition of discharges from such a weapon makes it necessary to repeatedly recharge the compressed air chamber which is a time consuming operation.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel compressed air cartridge for a weapon of this type which cartridge may be employed with the same facility in loading as the ordinary powder cartridge.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the acthan the bore In of the weapon and that the bore 1 I I I companying drawing and pointed out in the apthereof on an en- Y the same diameter as the bore I6, an abrupt. shoulder being formed at the rear end of said Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the valve used in this cartridge.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of the cartridge.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the present drawing the weapon parts are indicated in general at 5. This weapon includes a barrel 6 having at its rear end a cartridge chamber 1. A breech closure 8. is arranged at the rear of the barrel and is movable into and out of breech closing position, the means for so actuating the breech closure not being here shown as they form no part of the present invention. The breech closure or block 'is here shown as provided with a plunger 9 in axial 124-41) m alin'ement. with the cartridge chamber when the breech is closed. The purpose of this plunger will be presently explained but the operating means therefor are notshown as the specific It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the cartridge" I chamber 7 is of considerably greater diameter Ill is carried back into the chamber 1 through a boss I I so that an annular recess I2 is provided at the forward end of the chamber 1. I
The cartridge has a tubular body I3 of proper. diameter to fit snugly in the chamber 1. This body, has a rear end closure I4 formed integrally wardly in a bevelled valve seat I9. At its forward end the bore I8. opens into an enlarged" bore 20 of such diameter as to receive the boss I I so that the forward end of the assembled body I3 and valve seat. member may slide into the recess I2. member which hasa, body!!! fitting in the bore I8 and which is provided at its rear end with a head 22 having a bevelled face 23 normally seated on the seat I9. This valve member has a bore24 extending from'itsforward end; the head 22 closing the rear end of this bore. The forward end of the-bore 24 is enlargedto substantially enlarged portion to constitute a seat for the base of a projectile P. Ports 25 are formed in. the sidesof thevalve just forward of the head 22..
A stop stem or member 26 projects rearwardly I from the valve member to limit movement of the a valve with respect to the outer member of the cartridgeand a spring 2'lurges the valve against its seat. V
In preparation for use a suitable pipe fitting (not shown) is'applied to the valve member so j as' to push the valve rearwardly and open the.
Compressed air or gas is introduced through the fitting at the pressure desired after which the valve is allowed to close, the fitting is".
ports, 25.
removed and the projectile seated inplace.
In using the cartridge it is inserted in the: cartridge chamber and the latteris closed by Slidablein the bore I8 is a valve,
the breech block. In firing the plunger 9 moves forward carrying the cartridge with it until the valve strikes the rear end of theboss whereupon the cartridge body moves forwardly to open the ports 25 and allow the compressed air to flow from the body of the cartridge to the bore 24 and thus to force the projectile out through the bore l0. Upon opening the breech after firing the usual ejector finger will'engage the groove 28 and withdraw the cartridge which may be reloaded.
Having thus' described my invention whatl claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
The combination'of a gun having a cartridge receiving chamber, an annular boss formed on the inner end of the barrel of the gun and extending into the cartridge chamber with a bore therein aligning with the bore ofthe gun, said 7 boss being of lesser diameter than that of the cartridge chamber, a, compressed air cartridge having an enlarged bore in its forward end dis- .p'osed in the cartridge chamber with its bore disposedrearwardly of the boss of the gun and in alignment therewith when in normal position, a spring closed valve in the forward end of the cartridge and having a projectile receiving bore communicating with the compressed air chamber of the cartridge, said valve having its for- Ward end extending into the bore thereof'in close opposed relation to the boss of the gun, and means carried by the gun to simultaneously force 1 "the cartridge toward the barrel of the gun and open the valve by pressing it against the boss of the gun to eject a projectile retained by the valvein alignment with the bore of the gun.
