3 Claims.
This invention relates to road- Scrapers and more particularly to an open runner Vscraper of that general class shown and described in my prior United States Patent No. 2,215,830, the presentinvention being an improvement fthere- The object of the invention is to provide a'road Shaper having a scraping blade,` the front cutting edge of which is so disposed with respect to the adjacent opening in thev runner that, as the machine travels over a roadbed, the material at one side of the roadbed will be carried through the opening in the runner toward the opposite side of said rcadbed. g
A further object of the invention is to provide an open runner and scraping blade assembly especially designed for use as a left hand runner but which, if-desired, hand open runner. i
A further object is to provide a scraping blade having a 'terminal angularly disposed scraping lip which serves to gather loose surface material on the outside of the-runner and'deliver said material through the open runner to the opposite side of the machine, thereby materially increasing the effective scraping area of the machine and, consequently,` the eiciency thereof.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of machines so as to increase their utility, durability and eiciency.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a left hand open runner showing the same in position on a road scraper.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the runner and scraping blade assembly, taken on the line Z-,Zof Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective View of the forward end of the scraping blade and its associated parts.
The improved device forming the subjectmatter of the present invention comprisesa'supporting frame 5, to the lower portion ofwhich are rigidly secured front and rear longitudinally disposed runner sections 6 and 1, said runner sections being of diiierent lengths and spaced apart to form an intermediate opening 8 through whichY may be used as a rightis provided with an angularly disposed' scraping;
lip I which serves to gather loose material onV the outside of the runner and deliver said material through the opening 8, tothe opposite side of the machine, thereby increasing the effective,
scraping area of said machine. The lowertpor-A tion .of the blade 9 is provided with a sharpenedscraping edge II which merges into a similar scraping edge l2 formed on the lip l0.
Riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the" rear face ofthe scraping blade 9 is a right angle bar I3 and Welded or otherwise secured to the upper web of the bar I3 is a similar right angle bar I4. The scraping blade 9 is provided with a vertical extension or plate I which serves to conne'the loose surface material in contact with the forward face of the scraping blade and-pre Vent said loose material from being carried rearwardly between the right and left hand runners of the scraping machine. v-The forward end of the` extensionor plate I5 4is bent rearwardly, at I6, and secured to the adjacent portion of the angle iron I4 to'form a closure and also to reinforce and strengthen the device. A vertical guide post I1 is secured to the frame 5, near the forward end of the runner section 1, said guide post having a cylindrical sleeve I8 connected with the blade assembly and provided with a threaded nut I9 adapted to receive a correspondingly threaded adjusting rod 20. The upper end of the threaded adjusting rod 20 is provided with a universal joint 2l operatively connected with an operating shaft 22 extending to a point adjacent the drivers seat and provided with a hand wheel 23, by rotating which the scraping blade assembly may be adjusted vertically to permii-l a shallow or deep cut, or a leveling of the surface of the roadbed.
Secured to the angle bar i4 is a rearwardly ex tending brace 24 comprising integral converging:
; arms connected at their point of intersection.
with a straight brace or plate 25, which latter brace is also secured to the bar I4. The braces;
A2i! and 25 not only serve to reinforce andi strengthen the scraping blade assembly but also: serve to house and protect the adjusting mechanism for the scraping blade. It will thus be seen that as the scraping lip IU projects laterally beyond the runner section l, when the machine is caused to travel over a roadbed, said lip will gather loose material on the left hand sideof the machine and deliver same to the scraping blade 9 and be guided by said scraping blade to. the right hand side of the machine. It Wl1 further be noted that by operating the hand g the art and further description is deemed un,
necessary.
Having thus described the invention,vvhatwflis;M
