'7 Claims. (01. 268-117) This invention relates to power operated windows and has particular relation to windows operated by fluid pressure.
According to the invention a pivoted window such as the side ventilator window commonly employed on automotive passenger vehicles may be operated, through the direct connection of a shaft extended along the pivot axis, by a fluid operated motor of the vane type. Means may be provided for latching the shaft against turning movement to prevent unauthorized opening or closing of the window, and a release mechanism for the latch may be associated with manually operable valve means through which the operator is enabled to direct fluid pressure to the motor for operating the window between opened and closed positions.
These and other objects and advantages of the I invention will become apparent from a perusal of the following description of the structure disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an automobile door having a ventilating window to which the invention is applied;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the inner wall member of the door taken approximately along line 2-2 of Fig. l and showing the motor, latch and valve control unit in plan;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately alOng line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fi 5 is a rear elevational view of the motor unit with parts broken away andappearlng in section;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan sectional view taken along line 6-6 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a. view similar to Fig. 6 but with one of the valves in operating position;

As shown in Fig. l the vehicle door I0 may have a pair of window openings II and I2 separated by a vertical bar l3, the forward opening l2 being provided with a ventilating window I4 pivoted along a substantially upright axis by being mounted upon a shaft l5 and a trunnion I6 journaled in the window frame. The shaft l5 appearing in vertical is joined to a shaft extension I! by a coupling 20, the shaft extension I? being journaled in a motor casing it that is secured by means of a bracket It to an inner wall 2i of the door. The motor casing is has a substantially arcuate chamber at, with a wall substantially concen-= trio with the axis of shaft extension ii, and in the chamber is a vane piston 29 secured to the shaft extension 5 l. Secured to the bracket W at the juncture of the plates 22 and 23 is a valve body 32 having a valve seat 33 upon which are mounted for horizontal sliding movement a pair of valves 34 audit which may be of similar but reversed formation. Valve 34 has a recess 36 normally connecting ports 31 and 38 which are formed through the valve seat 33, the port 31 being in communication with a tube 39 extending to a suitable source of suction such as the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine and the port 38 communicating with a conduit 4| which opens into the motor chamber 28 on the right side of the vane piston 29 as the parts appear in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. The other valve 35 likewise has a recess 36 which normally opens communication between another port 31 extending through the valve seat 33 into communication with the suction conduit 39 and a port 42 which extends through the valve seat into communication with a conduit 43, the latter opening into the motor chamber on the left side of the vane piston 29 as the parts appear in Figs. 1, 2 and 5.
When either of the valves is shifted forwardly, that is, to the left as the parts appear in Figs. 3 and 4, the respective port 38 or 42 is uncov ered so as to admit atmospheric air through the connected conduitswll and 43 into the motor chamber, and the port 31. is blocked. This atmospheric air may enter the valve chamber through apertures 44 formed in the plate 23 above the valve body 32 and passes through a filtering element 45 which may comprise a pad of felt or similar material which is separated from the valves 34 and 35 by a thin metal plate 46.
For shifting valve 34 there is provided an actuator member 41 having a bifurcated portion 48 straddling a ridge 49 formed on the back of the valve and provided with a push button 5|. Acting between the push button and the valve body is a coil spring 52 for maintaining valve 34 in its normal position establishing communication'between the suction conduit and the right side of the motor chamber,
The valve 35 is provided like the valve 34 with an actuator, indicated at "I2, 2. button H secured to the actuator, and a spring. for urging the actuator and button assembly to a position wherein the valve opens communication between the suction conduit 39 and the left side of the motor chamber.
Interposed between the spring 52 and the valve body is a felt washer 53 for filtering such air as may pass into the valve body past the actuator 41. The buttons 5| and H may be slidingly received in the bores of tubular extensions 56 from the valve body, the extensions being capped by a trim plate 51 secured by a screw 58 to the valve body.
Secured to the shaft extension I! is a detent member 6| in the form of a notched wheel for cooperation with a latch '82 carried by a lever 63. The latter is pivoted at 84 to plate 23 of bracket :9 and has a spring 65 bearing upon its free end 66 for holding the latch engaged with the detent member. The spring is supported on a pin 61 and has an anchoring leg 68 extending through an aperture in the plate 23. On the end of the actuator member 12 and also on the end of the actuator 47 is provided a recessed portion 69 for receiving the end portion 66 of the lever 63.
In normal inoperative condition of the apparatus, with the valves in the position shown in Figs. 3, 4, 6 and 9, both sides of the motor chamher will be connected through the tube 39 to the source of suction and the window M will be held against turning movement by reason of the latch 62 being held engaged in a notch ,of the wheel '60 by the action of the spring 65.
When the button 5i now is depressed, the re sulting movement of the actuator member 41 will shift the lever 63 to release the latch and simultaneously will shift the valve 34 to a position opening port 38 to the atmosphere, with the result that atmospheric pressure will be applied to the right side of the motor chamber as the parts appear in Figs. 1 and 2 while suction will continue to prevail in the left side of the motor chamber. As a result the vane piston, shaft and window I 4 will be moved counterclockwise as the parts appear in Figs. 1 and 2, further opening the window. Release of the button 5| will. permit the valve and latch parts to return to their normal positions. again latching the window against unauthorized or accidental movement and again causing suction to be applied to both sides of the motor chamber. a
When the other button, H, is depressed, the latch mechanism will likewise be released but in this instance the valve 35 will be shifted to admit atmosphere through port 42 to the right side of the motor chamber caus ng the vane and shaft tomove clockwise. closing the window.
It will be understood that the structure here in shown and described is merely illustrative of the inventive princi les involved and that these principles may be otherwi e embodied without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination. a window frame. a window pivoted thereto, a shaft extended from the window along the axis of the pivot, a chambered casing, a vane on the shaft and disposed within said casing for operation to angularly move the shaft and window about said axis, valve means mounted upon said casing for applying a fluid pressure differential to opposite faces of the vane to effect such movement, manual means operable for actuating the-valve means, a latch normally holding the shaft against movement relative to the casing, and means operable by and during the operation of said manual means to positively move the latch to release the shaft for fluid actuation.
2. In combination, a window frame includin an adjacent vehicle body portion, a window pivoted to the frame, a shaft extended from the window along the axis of the pivot into said body portion, a casing having a substantially semicircular arcuate chamber received in said body portion, a vane piston within said chamber and secured directly to said shaft for imparting angular movement to the latter, latch means interposed between the chamber and window and directly engaging the shaft to lock the window, valve means for applying a fluid pressure differential to opposite faces of the vane piston to effect such movement, and a manual control common to both the valve means and the latch means and operable to manually release the shaft and apply the fluid pressure;
3. In combination, a window frame, a window pivoted thereto, a shaft extended from the window along the axis of the pivot, a casing having an arcuate chamber, a vane piston on said shaft and disposed in said casing for angular movement therein about the axis of the shaft, valve means for selectively applying differential pressures to opposite sides of the chamber to cause movement of the piston, said valve means including a. pair of manually actuated members, manual means for selectively actuating said members, a latch cooperating with said shaft for normally holding the latter against turning, and a part engaged and shifted by said manual means when either of said members is actuated for manually releasing said latch.
4. In combination, a window, fluid pressure mean including an angularly movable shaft for operating the window in both opening and closing directions, valve means including a pair of independently movable manually actuated members each for controlling operation of said fluid pressure means in one of said directions, detent means associated with said shaft and a latch member normally engaging said detent means to hold the shaft against angular movement, said manually actuated members and said latch member having associated parts for releasing the latch member from the detent means when either of said manually actuated members is operated.
5. In combination, a window, fluid pressure means for controlling the movement of the window in both opening and closing directions and said means including a toothed member movable therewith, valve means for controlling said fluid pressure means including a pair of push members, each of said members being depressible independently to effect movement of the window in one direction, a latch member engaging the toothed member for holding said fluid pressure means against movement, and each of said push members upon depression thereof being engageable with said latch member for disengaging'the latter from the toothed member.
6. In combination, a window, a fluid actuated device for operating the window, a latch for holding the fluid pressure device against actuation, valve means for applying fluid to said fluid 2,327,064 pressure device to cause actuation thereof, said shaft against such angular movement, valve means for applying fluid to said device to cause actuation thereof, said valve means including a member movable to efl'ect admission of fluid to the device to cause movement of the window in one direction and also including a second member movable to effect admission of fluid to the device to cause movement of the window in the opposite direction, said members being independently movable and each being provided with means for releasing the latch upon movement thereof.
