CALIBRATING MEANS FOR PISTON METERS I Filed NOV. 14, 1942 INVENTOR Azmm Z. 61%:
Patented Aug. 10,1943 I METERS Alfred L. Gris, Springfield, Mass assignerfto Gilbert, & Barker Manufacturing Company, West Springfield, 1 Ma Massachusetts Application more; 14, iMatseii iNc, 465,599: 7 Qsoiai si (ant -247) This invention relates .to improvements incalibrating' means for piston meters; enabling variation of the strokev of the pistonto be efiected in order to adjust the meter for the discharge' of a predetermined operation. t r V V 7 There are in'the prior art many-means for the 'same'purpose; In -meters using a crank'and con hecting rod drive between the pistons anwsha'ft,
the crank has been 'madeof' variable throwS In meters, wherein the pistons-act through cam followers on a cam-fixed to the meterShaft, the
cam ha beeri'made of variable'thr'ow as shown for example in UJS'. Patent No. 2,121',120,*granted June 21, 1938, on-aninvention of Warren-'13; 1'
De -Lancey. The necessity: for adjusting the and relatively inexpensive, construction, TIeS'OIt has been ,made to an adjusting 's'crew'which is mounted-in the ,cylinder head for adjustment in thedirection of the axis of the piston and which is adapted to be engagedbythe"pistonlto determine one end of the stroke thereof. One example of this construction is found in 'U. Si Patent N0.
,2.G91,912,;granted AugustBl, 1937, on an inven tion of.-Warren De Lancey. The construction has the disadvantage that it isnoisyin operation due to the impingement'of, theepiston', while trav= ,eling at'substantial' speed, with the fixed stoptr ".{I'hisinventionhas for an object the provision of an I adjusting screw, operable from outside the cylinder, whereby the cam follower, carriedby' t the piston, can be moved toward'or away from the cam onthe meter shaft to vary the stroke of the piston.
This arrangement measured quantity per cycle of,
is simple, inexpensive and ss.,. acorporation of of the calibrating means- In this drawing;the-calibrating;ineansihas been shown by way of illustrative example in connectionwith a piston mete'r of the typefshown inDe Lancey Patent No. 2,091,912 One of the plurality of cylinders isshown' ati15' and two others are shown in part at Band 1; "These cylinders radiate from a central chambe 8 and "throw'of such cranks Lor'cams' from outside the meter, leads to complicated 'and expensive struc,-' t mes which it is desired to avoid. For a siniple rtrolsjthe adniissionflof liquid to and thedischarg'e of liquid'ffom the cylindersla's by wayfoiconduits' such as 22; .1 Thi 'shaft 'alscgdrives whatever. reg-1' 1 'isterin'g ineans is usedfto indicate the I amount they are arrangedin opposed pairs] One of the i l pistons is shown at 9. L'Ifh'e two laterally-spaced w v members, shown in part-at I 0', are 'used to rig-idly interconnect the' 'pisto'n'fi to" the "piston inzthe opposed cylinderf' not "shown; The two halves ll andnl of piston lifbetween' which the piston leather'ES'iS cIamped fare he'ldtogetherfland to v members I ii by cap screws l4. V bearings l8intheupperand 'ber BL Oneof these followe to drive the va ve of t e meter whichi on of liquid passedthrough he'meizerr I operable in a commercially satisfactory manner.
While the construction involves l ost motion -betweenthe cam and one. of the-"cam followers,
the amount of lost motionis small and the en I v gagement between the follower and cam occurs atthe start of the stroke before thepiston has acquiredmuch speedwith gtheresult thatsuch engagement is notnoisy. r The invention will be disclosed tothe accompanying drawing-in which; 7
l and -2 are fragmentary sectional plan and sectional elevational views respectively, of
a piston meter; having a calibrating means .em-
bodying'the invention; V v r Fig. 3 is, an exterior encl'view illustrative of the means for sealing the calibrating means; and
with reference This'inventionprovidesaispecial mountingof a cam" follower, such as I afja'nd means whereby 0 its position -relative"'to1cam' 3lfi may be adjusted with conveniencei'andfacc cylinder and-' with other later be described.
