The button to which my-invention pertains has an integral neck portion through which the hutton is sewed on thegarment and it is an object of my invention: to provide-said neckiportionin j elongated, tapered form to fit a vcorrespondingly shaped buttonholewith the larger end of the neck portion at the larger end iofthe'buttonhole '10 above mentioned; and"; g andthe smaller end of theneckportion' towards Flgl 6 1s a cross-sectional "vlew ta'k 011 llne the smaller .endof the buttonhole-tofi t theneck il itgftirgz "f 1 v v -h ;'t'h:-: portion within the buttonhole without: undue ni o I orrns omy mv'en 1011 ass OIWIIY'IIL e pressure'on orspreadin of the-same and having drawing, vl f f s t enc k-port on of the butfiatzsides and-rounded ends to avoid-frayin or tou -a d t md j at s-ft h po t -t e damaging the buztonhole in themovementroftll eilgalts arilrfilegrgll gonnectecliditi herring the neck portion herein. 1n fin 8 I e e '9 5 1H B J Ai'further 'object 'of my invention-is to'provide D m 'under pressure in a die ofm q; the neck portion with-a substantially uniform" rnaterials of anv desired colors; Thehead porj cross-section throughout its height to -avoid q Hoare v n anvs ape 'desl d clr ula 7 holding the garment layer having the'buttonhole w he e how r and mjfi'lgs. l t t p a 1 in a definite position on theneck portionwhere zu age lief ,{tihe leadhfiptgtlol g gi wgg g by to prevent wrinkling orcrowding of 'said 'gar- Ome mp8 .C 3 d 'y i ment layer at the button especially with respect n P k or beiornarne te fa cu ab e to the heavier overcoat materials where larger 20' 1mpres s dt e for buttons us mllltary tt are 9 uniforms. . This is aided by having the neck portion substantially uniform in cross-section throughout its height so that the side and end surfaces of the neck portion may continue uninterruptedly to the outer end of the neck portion for a smooth overlapment of the garment layers when fastened together by the button.
The neck portion l terminates at its outer end in a flat surface M. This surface is coextensive with the cross-section of the neck portion as shown herein. Said surfacehas an area sufficient to firmly support and'maintain' the button in outstanding relation on the garment layer when sewed thereto. Hence the surface M holds the button from sagging or hanging over in a tilted positicnlto prese'rve'a neat appearance for the garment. V
' In'both forms of button shown, the neck portion I has a roundedor curved corner l5 at its lower inner end to preventpuncturingthe garment material in the manipulation of the button in unbuttoning it repeatedly and frequently in the use of the garment.
In Figs. 1 to 4, the neck portion I has a thread receiving opening l6 extending laterally through the neck portion. so that .thebutton may be sewed on the garment layerv by a side sewing operation, the fastening thread I! passing through thegarment layer and the opening IS. The neckportion l hascountersinking recesses l8, 18 in its sides at the; opposite ends of the opening IE to ,disposethe fastening thread I! out of contact with the edges of the buttonhole to avoid cutting either of the same to fray the buttonhole or loosen the connection of the button with garment. w V T In theformbf button shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the neck portion I- has vafpair. of openings l9, [9 extending therethrough axially of the button to receive the fastenin threads which sew the'butsubstantially flat sides and rounded ends to avoid fraying the buttonhole by contact of the neck portion therewith, said neck portion being perforated to receive the sewing thread which seforming to the ,tapered'shape of the neck portion to firmly support, the button throughout the length of the neck portion'on the garment layerwhen sewed. thereto and hold the button from sagging.
. avoid fraying of the buttonhole. by contact of the neck portion therewith,- said neck portion having an opening extending laterally theregarmentlayer when sewed thereto and. hold the ton on the garment layer. It will be noted from Fig. 6; that the openings l9 extend completely throughthe button from topitobottom, there being a bridge portion 20 therebetween to sup-- port the thread loops at the top end of thebutton. In,-a button" of this type the fastening threadis completely housed within and protected by the neck'portion Z. Bothzbuttons are well adapted for use onv overcoats and other garments comprised of the heavier materials, the neck portions firmly supporting the buttons-in outstanding positions on the garments, saving the buttonholes I and the fastening threads, and
holding the buttons from tilting over and sagappearance required 'ingly' shaped buttonhole with the wider end of the taper at the largerend .of the buttonhole and the narrowerend of the taper towards the smaller end of the buttonhole to fit the-neck portion within the buttonhole without undue spreadin of the same, said neck portion having through to receive the sewing thread which secures the button to the garment layer and having countersinking recesses at the opposite ends of said opening to dispose the sewing thread out of contact with the sides of the buttonhole, said neck portion extending outwardly from the head portion to a substantially uniform extent throughout the length of the neck portion and terminating at its outer end in a substantially flat surface conforming to the tapered shape of the neck portion and co-extensive with the lateral dimension thereof to firmlyseatthe button through the length of the neck portion on the bUttOIlEIIOm sagging. l.
