Rollers 40, which may be subjected to a pressure by means of springs or cogs, are movablein slots 4| in the frame 24, and insure proper contact of the paper pattern with the top layer of the cloth.
When the machine in operation i traveling over the cloth and the vacuum is; applied to the hollow portion 21, powder from the powder box or roller is sucked by means of the vacuum in said hollow portion 21 through the perforations 42 of the paper pattern 31,. leaving a distinct marking upon the surface of the top layer '36'o-f the cloth.
The slidable blocks 34 are adjustably connected i by a chain 43 to sprockets 44 in order to regulate the heights of the marking member 12 and roller 35 in relation to the number of layers of the cloth. The said adjustment is accomplished by means of a ratchet 45 and pawl 46.
As shown in Figure 3,- the powder box or roller 35' comprises a cylindrical member 41 made,-for
instance, of meshed wires, the: surface of which is- At covered by a thin cheese cloth-like material. each end said rollers are provided with studs 49 adapted to be journaled in the slidable block members 34.
As shown in Figure 4,the said rollers may also t consist of a rubber material 50, provided with fine slits 5| therein. 7
The modification shown" in Figures 4 and 5 will clearly lend themselves to-be used with a liquid marking material disposed therein.

In Figure 'I is shown a stantially rectangular shape, said powder box is at its bottom provided with-a perforated surface 54 in the form'of a cheesecloth. A three-way valve 55 is secured .to the top of the powder box- 53 so. that the latter may be connected to a vacuum source aswell as to a compressed air supply.

The modification illustrated in Figure 12, shows a machine 24 made for spreading and marking.
In this construction a double set of hollow members 21' are employed; said members will in the respective positions shown in Figures 14 and 15 tend to tuck the cloth under the clamping members 25. I I i The hollow members 21' are secured at each end to members 6|, which-are pivoted at 62 to w the slidable block 34'; said hollow members 21 may by means (not shown herein) be placed in position; as indicated in the Figures 14 and 15. The spreading member 21' can spread two .pieces of cloth at the same time, or one piece of cloth and the paper pattern, while doing the marking simultaneously.
Theblock members 34 are provided with extensions 63, whereby to accommodate the rollers 40 and the paper pattern roller 38'.
By this construction any adjustment by means of the chain 43 and sprocket 44 automaticallysecured to blocks depending upon the direction of the movement of i the. machine, as illustrated in details in Figures 14 and 15, perform the marking of the cloth, as previously described in Figure 1.

as shown in Figure 16; and it would fromthis appear that the device shown in Figure 16 may serve as'an ordinary spreading machine, and the machine shown in Figure 1v as a marking machine alone.

A machine for marking, and combined marking and spreading of cloth, comprising a. frame member adapted to travel over a number of layers of cloth arranged upon a table, means for securing said cloth to the table, block members adjustably arranged in said frame member, a sub-' 1 stantially cylindrically shaped powder roller formed with a sieve-like surfaceand disposed in said block members, a cloth-spreading and marking member cooperating with said powder roller and being mounted in said block members, and a paper pattern arranged on top of a layer of cloth, said layer of cloth and paper pattern being disposed between said owder roller and cloth spreadingv member, the latter having blade-like projections upon each side thereof and a vacuum chamber formed with perforations therein, hollow shafts in continuation of said vacuum chamber adapted to connect'said spreading andmarking mounted upon the ends of the roller,

a powder box disposed in the block members, and 1' acloth spreading member mounted in therlatter and adapted for reciprocal movement, said cloth spreading member being adapted-to cooperate I with thepowder box, and a three-way valve arranged at the top of said powder box, whereby a vacuum or compressed air maybe applied, re-

5. In a device, as claimed in claim 4, and wherein rollers movably mounted in the frame proper are adapted to insure a suitable contact of the paper pattern with the top layer of the cloth.
6. In a device,'as claimed in claim 2, and wherein the table is provided with rails, and rollers mounted upon'the frame and adapted to travel upon said rails.

In a device, as claimed in claim 4, and wherein the block members are connected to the "frame by a chain and sprockets, whereby to regulate the height of the spreading and marking member and the powder box member relative to double-set of cloth-spreading members associated] I with said block members, and means for connecting the latter to said spreading members,
