l lli' l /oaa 6740 54 62 pass through both theirscreens 24 and 33, and will drop down into the hopper 35. Y Y' This hopper discharges onto the transversely extending belt 31 whichcarries the crushed aggregate out of the machine.
Of course some of the material from thejau1 Crusher i3 will be so line that it will pass imfmediately through the screens 2li and 33 and Crusher will immediately pass through the coarse Y screen 24, so that only a fractional part of the entire volume ofaggregate is passed between AIhe primary roll 28-has been broken away 'to better illustrate the structure. Each roll includes a central hubV portion 53 having a radially extending flange as shown at 54 and at one end of the hub.
The outer or wearing surface of each roll is preferably made in the lform of a hollow cylinder or drum-like member 55 having the inner surface thereof tapered outwardly toward'the edges,
the primary 4rolls 2B and 29., The same is true l with the material discharged from the pri1nary` rolls 28l and 29, and afportion of this material will pass immediately through the screens 24 andv 33intofthe hopper 35 so that lthe secondary rolls needtoV work only on a still smaller portion of thev entire volumeof aggregate.
For instance, if half' ofthe aggregate from the Vjaw Crusher i3 has to pass through the rolls 23 and 29 and only half Yof the aggregate discharged from the rolls 228 and 2S has to pass through the rolls 3i and 32, the rolls 3l and 32 will have to Voperate only on about one-fourth of the entire volume of aggregate. By-using thedualor compound, double roll crusher and conveying system described, the
processof reduction of the aggregate may be accomplished in three smaller. steps as compared to the'two large stages of the conventional machine. I have found that ythe capacity of `a rock crushing plant is increased by as much as 50% by the use of my conveying system and dual or compound, double roll Crusher. Furthermore, the"V machine mayy handle larger aggregate if desired, and the increased production of. such a machine is accomplished with less wear and shock tothe parts of the machine because the lreduction at each stage is lessdrastic. Referring now to Figures 2 and 3Y in particular, in which the specific construction oi the dual -roll crusher is shownjrin detail:
A 'base or frame l5 mayl lnclude a pair of longitudinally extending members di and 221 which may-be in the form of Ystructural I beams. yThese yare adapted to be securely mounted on the upper surface of themain 'frame l@ ,of the crusher plant.
Y `A plate-like guide member i3 is mounted on the top surface of each of these frame members 4i and 42. Similar plates or guide members 114 are supportedat spaced distances above the bottom plate members 43 by means of spacer blocks l 45 and 4i positionedabove each endvr of each 'base member, and a pair of third spa-cer members 48 positioned intermediate the end spacermembers. Journal boxes le and 55 are positioned between the guide members i3 andel above each base member and adjacent the spacer members 46 at one end of the structure. The fixed roll shaft 52 is received for rotation in anti-frictionv bearings inl these journal' boxes. A labyrinth structure, indicated at 54, serves to Vprotect the bearings from entry of gr-it and from the loss of grease. w Y One ofthe primary rolls and one' of the'A secondaryy rolls Y28 and 3l respectively are affixed to this fixed shaft by keys or the like (not shown).
vthose heretofore described andshown asshovvnat5land53.y
' Ihe annular flanged portion 54 o'flthe hub is,
Aof course, provided witha similar taper so as to permit it to be snugly received within the tapered portion 51 of the outer wearing drum. An annular shaped web member 59 is adapted to be slidably received over the'end 53 of the hub op- 'po's'ite'the'annular flange and, at thersame time,
to be wedged tightly .into place within the tapered portion 58 of the outer drum.
I have found it desirable, when 'mounting a y lprimary and a secondary rollon the same shaft,
to placethe hubs in position on this shaft so thatv thev annular viianges are adjacent Vone another but spaced apart by means such as a washer 6|. When this arrangement is used,V the annular wedges 59 may be wedged into place and allY the parts of both rolls may be rigidly mounted in their respective ,positions by means of a'pluralityof tie rods 52 long enough to extend through both rolls and threaded'at their ends to receive clamping nuts 63. f
The movable or companion 3i are mounted upon another shaft 5i, and this shaft is in turn mounted for rotation in journal boxes 82 and 83 which are-substantiallythe same as that shownat. These two journal boxes 82 and, however, are provided with. guide members S34 along the lower and uppersurfaces thereof to permit them to beslidably received between the lower and upper plate-like guide bars [i3-,and lill respectively of the main frame, y
Y'Ihe intermediate spacer members :i8 arehiixedly mounted between the guide bars i3 and d by means such as the bolts Stand are also provided withopenings 8] in which adjustable stop members 85'a1ereceved. These threaded-stop members areadjusted oneach side of the Crusher-device to fix the closest distance to which the movable rolls 29 and .52 may approach the fixed rolls 25 and 3i. AWhen the stop members S7 are properly adjusted, they V arelocked in position by means oftheflocknuts 69.; Y
In order to provide a certain amount of resilience in the Crusher structure and to prevent breakage incase a piece of iron orthe like isV dropped into the Crusher, the movable rolls are biased toward the' stops byj means of yheavy springs Sh YOne of thesprings is ofcourse provided to actfupon eachiend ofthe movable Yroll shaft 8l. One end of one of the'springs Stis adapted to bear against' the spacer member 47 and the oppositeend of the spring to Vbear against and 83. at. all times, and"it will be apparent that roliste and s2 toy at 28 and A guide i l t t K fgsjilg t5111153111118'theadjustment nuts -96 farther vonto the adjustment or guiiierods will serve to place i i the crusher springs 9i under greater compression to thus permit the pressure on theaggregate fed between the rolls `to be increased vor 'decreased asv desired.
