thereafter it is preferable'to fold, the upper ones down and the lower ones up individually and alternately, these operations being continued with each of the strips until all of them have been so folded into place. The ends of those folded upwardly, are cut off flush with the upper surface of the body as it is built up, while those folded downwardly are cut off to such a length that they will approximately meet the front face of the foremost of the remaining strips of the lower set. At the completion of this operation the assembled body will appear about as shown in Fig.5.
Next the body so built up is placed in a suitable mold where, with the aid-of heat and pressure, it is molded into its final form, as shown in Fig. 1, and the rubber binding material'with plies is required for this purpose it can readily be introduced. Usually, however, this is not necessary. 1 I
In this connection it may be pointed out that the picker must, be finished to three fixed dimensions in order to function properly injagiven loom with a certain picker stick, shuttle, and box clearances.
as above described, while subject. to much ariation to suit therequirements of different looms,
must beso predetermined that after-tile,body
has been molded to the desiredform the finished article will have the necessary dimensions.
It should be observedithat in the'completed article the fabric plies 5 of the p'adare' mechanically interlocked with the loop section 2 by virtue of thefact that'they encircle the latter section at its forward end. The plies 5 also bind the intermediate filler section I firmly in place against the forward end faceof the loop 2 and against the lower forward edge thereof, and an especially secure union of all ofthese parts is provided by the interleavingof the overlapped ends of the strips 5 at the forward face of the filler section. This mechanical arrangementof the plies cooperates with the adhesion of the rubbery impregnating [medium in' binding the parts of the entire body together into a solid integral structure. I 7 I The bias cutting of the fabric'pieces 5 and I is of advantage in producing a pad's ection 4 which will better resist the disintegrating engagement of this member with the metal end of the shuttle. It will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 1 that as the diameter of. the hole b increases, due to wear, and finally begins to break through at the sides of the pad 4, the warp and filling threads still resisting such breakage have long lengths anchored securely in the body of the block. On the other hand, if these warp or filling threads were parallel to the edges of the block, the horizontal threads would offer less and less resistance to the spreading action on the block as the edges of the hole b approached the vertical edges of the block. Practically all Consequently, the. number of plies used in makingup the sectionsof the picker,
integral structure.
of this resistance ultimately would come on the vertical threads which are not so disposed as to effectually resist such action. The diagonal cutting, however, so disposes both sets of threads that they are diagonally related to the lateral faces of the block and thus both the warp and filling are more favorably positioned to resist those forces tending to spread the block.
Pickers made in accordance with this invention have proved in actual practice to give an exceptionally high period of serviceability. At the same time the expense' of manufacturing them, while. slightly higher than prior art constructions of a similar type, is within entirely reasonable limits.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will beevident that the invention may be embodied in otherfor'ms' without departing from the spirit or scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim as new is:
