Description

(No Model.)
Snow vel." No. 232,456. Patented Sept. 21,1880.
NJEIERS. PNDTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASH NGTON UNITE STATES PATENT GEEICE.
HIRAM CLARK, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
SNOW-SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 232,456, dated September 21, 1880. Application filed April 9, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM CLARK, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snow-Shovels, (not patented to me nor, with my knowledge or consent, in any foreign country,) and of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a novel, simple, and conveniently-applied device for attaching the handle to the blade of the shovel, whereby the latter is thoroughly braced and the handle readily and perfectly secured thereto.
It also consistsin improved means of attaching the metal facing to the point of the shovel, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims. i
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a snow-shovel provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the attachment of the metal facing to the point of the shovel. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the said devices detached. and Fi 5 is an enlarged isometric detached view of-the device for securing the handle to the shovel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A denotes the shovel-blade, usually made of wood, and with an upwardprojecting plate or flange, a, at the rear end.
13 represents my improveddevice for attaching the handle to the shovel, the same consisting of a square cast-metal socket, b, terminating at an acute angle with a face, 0, extended the height of the rear end of the shovel, against which it is made to bear, and to which it may be attached by a screw or rivetpassing through the parts.
From the base of the'face 0 projects forward a shank or tongue, d, which bears against the under side of the shovel-blade, and is provided with holes 1, for the insertion of screws or rivets, by means of which it is attached to the shovel.
The upper end of the face 0 has a forwardprojecting hook, c, which engages the top and partly the ront of the rear plate, a, and is thus firmly secured thereto.
The socket b, with its tongue cl and hook e,
is cast in one piece, and when applied to the shovel inthe manner shown and set forth it thoroughly braces the same.
0 is a strip of sheet metal of a length to extend across the point or front end of the shovel-blade. It has at its center three longitudinal reverse folds, o 'v o, the central one of which forms a groove for the reception of a stiff plate, 8, which is secured therein by rivets passing through said plate and through the two jaws formed by the folds o c, at opposite sides thereof.
The free edges of the strip 0 extend rearward with a slight flare and embrace the front edge of the shovel-blade, which is beveled correspondingly and countersunk at the top and bottom, so as to bring the edges of the strip O flush with the surface of the blade.
By means of rivets passing through the two rearward extensions of the strip 0 and through theintervening edge of the shovel, the former, with its plate 8, is firmly secured to the latter. The return fold of the strip 0, which forms the groove containing the plate 8, abuts against the end of the shovel, and thus causes the latter to receive the jars which the plate 8 may be subjected to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the shovel A, provided with the plate a, the metal socket having the face 0 and integral tongue (I, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the shovel A,provided with the plate a, the metal socket Z2, having the face 0, the tongue (I, and hook c, substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination, with the shovel A, of the sheet-metal strip 0, having the folds o o '1), and the plate 8, inserted in the central fold, all constructed and combined substantially in the manner described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, this 5th day of April, 1880.
HEEAM CLARK. [L. s.]
Witnesses E. LAASS, WM. 0. RAYMOND.
