Y 16 Claims. This invention relates in general to packages for small articlessuch as' tablets, 'pills or buttons, l
or powdered or granulated material, or liquid or paste, one object ofthe invention being to provide a package that shall include a novel and improved construction and combination of a bag or envelo'pe for the articles or material having an initially sealed and tamper-proof foldable closure, and a foldable cover for enclosing the envelope or bag and comitructedto cooperate with said foldable closure after the closure has once been unsealed or opened so as to hold the4 closure in closed position when the cover is folded to enclose the bag or envelope and to release said foldable closure when the cover is unfolded for access to the bag or envelope, whereby `the bag can be repeatedly opened and closed easily and quickly. and shall be held rmly closed. l
Another `object is to provide a package that l shall-include a novel and improved construction and combination of a bag or envelope formed of 4 flexible material, and a foldable cover formed of ing a modlncation of the invention and showing thebag sealed. and l 4Figure 9 is a similar view showing the bag y opened and inverted for removing vthecontents from the bag.
Specifically describing the form of the invention shownin Figures l to 5 inclusive, the package comprises a bag,` envelope or like container A formed of suitable material. 'preferably thin and flexible sheet or strip materiall such as paper, "cellophane," Plioiilm," metallic foil, cloth or the like, especially sheet material which itself is thermoplastic and canbe softened by heat-i or has a thermoplastic or fusible coating, `so that the juxtaposed layers of material can be fused or .caused to adhere together by application of heat and pressure, or with glue. to form a seal. As
shown, the bag comprises a single'strip of marelatively stiffer material for enclosing and protecting said bag or envelope, with one end of said bagor envelope permanently connected adjacent oney end of` said cover and the bag or envelope provided with a fold intermediate its length with which the other end of the' foldable cover shall cooperate to hold the bag or` envelope ilat in proper position and against crumpling in the cover.
Other objects, advantagesand results of the invention will appear from the following description in conjunction with the, accompanying drawings in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package con- -vstructed in accordance withmy invention and showing the cover opened.
g `Figure 2 is a similar view showing the initial 1 `.position of the parts of the package during 010B- ing of the package. l
Figure 3 wis a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the package showing the parts in a subsequent positionduring closing of the package.
Figure 4 is a view similar the package closed.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 5-5 ofFigure 4. y
Figure 6 isa view similar to Figure l showing a modifled form of the package.
Figure 'I is a horizontal sectional view on the line 1-1 of Figure 6.
Iilgureisaviewsimilartolligure lillustratto Figure a showing terial folded longitudinally with its edge portions secured together as at I.
The bag A is associated with a cover B'which is foldable around the bag to enclose and protect the bag and also to receive printed matter such advertising material. Preferably thecover is formed of a single strip of material relatively stiffer than material of which the bag A i`s formed,
and is folded at 2 aroundvone end of the bag and -secured to the bag as by adheslveor by heat and p crimping where the material of whichl the bag is formed is thermoplastic.
VThe other end of the bas Ah'as a neck portion I and is initially sealed or closed in any suitable manner as 'by crimping l. so that the bag is tamper-proof. VThe bag may be opened by tearing the material across the neck as` at lil to form an opening Il, and after the baghas once been opened, it is closable by transversely folding the bag as at 5 inwardlyV of the opening Il.
'Ihe body portion of the cover strip lies along or is juxtaposed to one side 4of the bag A, and the cover strip has a second fold I to receive the fold I of the bag and to form a cover flap Cthat 4is hingedly connected 'att 6 to the body portionof the cover strip. The flap C' is folded at 1 to form two hingedly connected sections I and 9, the latter of which isV adapted to be arranged in side-by-side relation to' and beneath the section I as the cover is folded about the package. The section B is of a sizel to cover the side of the package opposite the body portion l. of the cover strip, and the section 9 is voffsuch 4size that its free end. edge lil may separably enter the fold l of the bag so as to stretch and u hola sst the bag between said :oid and the ypoint of connection 2 of the bag with the coverand at the same time hold the transverse Afold I of the bag between said end edge and the fold 6 of the cover when the cover is folded around the bag to enclose it. as most clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
Suitable means may be provided for holding the closure flap C in this cover-closing position, but as shown the marginal end portion II of the cover strip beyond the fold 2 is inspaced yrelation to the side of the bag A so as to releasably receive the fold 1 of the closure ilap when the cover is folded around the package, to hold the-closure flap against unfolding, as shown in Figure 4.
With this construction it will be observed that the fold '2 of the cover strip closes and reenforces one end of the bag A, the cover protects the relatively thin and weak material of the bag, the cover flap firmly holds the closure fold 5 of the bag against unfolding, and the section 9 of the closure flap also serves in the nature of a spring follower and stretches and holds the bag in proper position and against crumbling or displacement in the cover. After the bag has been opened initially by removal of the tearing flap 30, the bag can be closed and opened repeatedly by simple folding and unfolding of the cover flap C and the fold 5 of the bag.
A modification of the invention is shown in Figures 6 and 7 where the bag or envelope D is formed of two separate sheets I2 of material that are crimp sealed together along the longitudinal margins, as at I3, and one end, as at Il. The other end of the bag is initially closed as by a crimped seal I5 which provides a tearing flap like the flap 30. The cover of this form of the package is of the same structure and cooperates with the bag D in the same manner as in the form shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive.
Figures 8 and 9 illustrate another modification of the bag wherein the bag E is formed of two superposed layers of packaging material, such as Puoi-lim, that are crimp sealed or bonded together along their marginal portions as at I6 to form a receptacle to hold small articles such as pellets F, or liquid, paste, powdered material, etc. The sealed or bonded portions I6 of the layers of material are so shaped as to provide a discharge or pouring neck I1 for the bag and to provide a tearing flap I8 which can be torn across the neck to form a discharge or pouring orice I9. 'I'he bag E is enclosed in a cover G that may be substantially identical in construction with the cover B.
The bag is initially sealed to enclose the co tents and make the package tamper-proof, andwhen it is desired to open the bag, the flap I8 is torn off, after which the bag may be inverted as shown in Figure 9 for removal of the contents. The discharge neck 'Il provides a restricted discharge for the contents lof the bag so as to restrict the flow of the contents of the bag through the orifice I9. After the bag has once been opened, it can be again closed and then repeatedly opened and closed by folding of the bag in thecover as described in connection with the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive.
Other modifications in the structure and combination of the bag and cover will occur to those skilled in the art as within the spirit or scope of the invention. f
