This invention relates to a spout construction for containers. relates to containers formed of cardboard and the like adapted for the transportation and dispensing of liquids, such as milk, of the type disclosed in Patent No. 2,218,670, October 22, 1940. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a discharge opening having a spout adjacent thereto to facilitate pouring the contents from the container. In the previous constructions employed hitherto, as in the aforementioned Patent No. 2,218,670, it was found difii-' cult to pour the contents without spilling. The" present invention overcomes this diiliculty by providing. a spout portion which is formed from a tab portion integral with the container without involving the use of additional materials or' increasing the cost of manufacture.
The invention is applicable to paper containersof various types and is susceptible of difier ent uses. The embodiments disclosed in the following speciflcation are set forth by way of example only for illustrating the inventive can- In the drawings:
More specifically the invention upper panels 89, 90, 9| and 92. Panels 89 and 9|, -are cut at their free edges so as to have a ,U-
shaped contour indicated by numerals 93 and 94. When these panels are folded over into abutting relation as shown in Figure 4, the cut out portions form a rectangular opening through which the contents can be poured. Panel 92 is provided with a .tongue portion 3|! formed by a U-shaped cut line H which is hinged on line'lll.
Panel 90 is provided with an outwardly hingeable tab portion l which is formed by cut . score lines 5, 1 and 6. The tab is adapted to be hinged along score line 2. U-shaped out lines 3 and t i provide legportions 5B and 5| which are hinged to the tab along lines 40 and ti. A portion 8 is cut out in order to permit grasping of the free edge of the 'tab' in order to hinge same outwardly.

Figure 7 is a fragmental enlarged perspective In forming the carton from the blank, the walls are set up in right angular relation and glue panel '84 is glued to the inner face of panel 80. The bottom flaps 85 and 81. are then folded inwardly and flaps 86 and 88 are folded thereover in overlapping relation and glued together. Up:- per panels 89 and 9| are then folded. inwardly. Panel 92 is then folded thereover and then panel so is folded over and adhered to panel 92- by suit able adhesive H3, except that no adhesive is applied adjacentthe dispensing opening as indicated by numeral 29'. The container may be waterproofe'd with paramn wax or other suitable composition, being coated inside and outside.
In using'the container, the tab is grasped adjacent the opening 8 and pulled outwardly to the position indicated inFigure 2. Portions 28 v and 25 of the tab are then folded along score view of the container showing the pouring opening uncovered,

Figure 10 is a view showing in plan a portion of the inner face of the blank.
Referring to the drawings, Figures 1 to 5, thecontainer is made from a blank, as shown in Figure 5,'sultably cut and scored to provide side wall panels as, 8|, 82 and 83 and glue panel.
The side wall panels are provided with bottom end panels 85, 88, 8'! and 88 respectively and lines 9 and it to form a spout as shown in Figure 3. At the same time the leg portions 50 and will be folded into position so as to lockagainst the free edges. 5 and 5 of the receptacle thereby gflrmly retaining t e spout in position. The tongue portion at 'ing glued to tab i will also be bent outwardly thereby providing an opening in the receptacle for pouring the contents therefrom.
A further modification of the container construction is illustrated in Figures 6 to 10 wherein the container is similar to the construction illustrated in Figure 1. Leg portions 58 and Bi formed by U-shaped cut; lines 3 and 4 extending below the hinge line 2 are hinged respectivelyalong lines 40 and 4| to the body of the tab. In opening this container, the tab l is first pulled outwardly as shown in Figure 7. Portions 23 and 25 are then folded along score lines 9 and l0 to form a spout as shown in Figure 8 and the leg portions 50 and 5| are at the same time positioned into locking engagement with the corresponding free edges 5 and 6 thereby insuring retention of the pouring spout during pouring 0f the contents in the container.

' 2.-A container for use in the storage, transportation and dispensing of pourable materials. said container being fabricated of a plurality of fiat angularly disposed marginally interconnected panels and being stir! and self-supporting, one wall thereof being cut or scored to provide a displaceable tab integrally connected to the wall by an uncut portion which constitutes a. hinge line about which the tab may be swung outwardly to uncover a pouring opening, said tab being provided with spaced score lines intersecting said hinge line, said score lines extending from said hinge line in convergent relation, and a pair of spaced parallel slits extending from each end'of the hinge line, and a transverse slit joining the extremities of each pair of slits to provide leg portions at each end of said hinge line, said tab when hinged outwardly on said hinge line and folded along said spaced score lines forming a spout portion and said leg portions folded at right angles to said spout portion and the ends thereof defined by said transverse slits engaged in abutting contact with a cut portion of said wall for retaining the spout portionin position.
