J. E. SCHENKER RECORD HOLDER FILE Filed Jan. 16 1942 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 www- Jaiat .ZfJaemkn- June 29, 1943. J. E. SCHENKER I RECORD HOLDER FILE Filed Jan. 16 1942 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 29, 1943 UNITED STATES'FATENT orrlce Jack E. SchenkeryChic'ago, Ill. Application January 16, 1942, Serial No. 426,981
My invention relates to a file or album for containing phonograph records or the like which resembles a book when closed and an expansible file when opened, which file will simultaneously display a plurality of records, so that an individual selection can be made without the turning of pages or confusing searching for a particular record.
The invention has among its objects the production of a simple, desirable, efficient, inexpensive, practical and convenient device of the kind described that will afford most satisfactory protection to the contained records.
1 More particularly the invention has among its objects the production of an attractive file of the kind described, in appearance resembling a book consisting of two covers hingedly connected to- 'gether by a back portion and containing a plurality of individual but associated pockets or envelope units suitably secured to ether, the associatedpockets being-secured as a complete unit to'the inside face of each of the covers. The pockets are so constructed that they may be opened up or expanded topermit the ready removal or the insertion of any one of a number of records, or to be closed and embrace the records and securely retain the same in place when the covers are closed and the book or file set up or carried or otherwise handled.
' The invention has among its further objects the production of a device of the kind described inwvhich the pockets are provided with cover-like members and are automatically expanded and opened or closed upon grasping andopening or closing the covers of the file.
Another object is the production of a device in which'the covers may be opened out flat on a desk, table or other support, and all of the records and information with regard thereto dis played at one time without requirin the successiVe turning over of separate pages to separately display individual records for selection.
A further object is the construction of a file of the kind described, in which the records are all well protected against injury and in which the records are kept clean when the file covers are closed. Phonograph records being ordinarily comparatively fragile or at least breakable, the matter of protection is very important, and since the records are not as efiicient when they accumulate dust on the faces, the matter of keeping them clean or dustless is also of great importance.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described wil1 b obfclu'sive, each individual pocket unit is made up 11 Claims. (Cl. 12915) vious to those skilled in the art from the discloe sure herein given. 1
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of .my improved file with the covers closed;
Fig. 2 is anend elevatlonof the same with the covers openedto display a plurality of records in a manner that individual records may be readily selected; v j

Fig. '7 is a View of an individual pocket or envelope blank illustrating one embodiment of the invention prior to folding and securing of the ends and securing adjacent pockets together to make upthe assembly; Fig. 8 is a perspective viewof a portion of the invention or pocket in open position as illustrated n F 2; Fig. 9 is a view similarto Fig. 2 of a portion of a book embodying a modification;
Fig. 10 is a sectional. view similar to Fig. 5 of the book illustrated in Fig. 9;
Fig. 11 is a plan View of a blank for constructing the modification illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10; and
- Fig. 12 is a plan view of the cover blank illustrated in Fig. 11. v r I Referring now to the drawings, the file is made up of a plurality of individual pockets or envelopes indicated generally by the numeral l, which are arranged'between covers 22 hingedly connected together by means of a back 3, the pockets being suitably secured to the inner face of each of the covers 2, which are made substantially stiff or rigid, with the several pockets secured together to form a unit. I I
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 .to 8 infrom a blank indicatedgenerally by the reference B, and consists of the two sides 4-4 and an intermediate or cover portion noted generally as'5. Theintermediate portion, which in the construction shown is the top or outer edge of the pocket when assembled, is divided into two portions 6--6 by the scoring line I. There is also provided the scoring lines 8, which permit the sides 4 to be turned or bent back, as shown particularly in Figs. 4 and 5.
Each end of the blank is preferably cut in or slitted as indicated at 9 and suitably scored as indicated at It! and II to provide the wing portions l2 and I3. There is, likewise provided, a slot or slit l4 between the portions 66 which is enlarged between th ends as indicated at I5.
As shown in Fig. 7, portions Iii-I6 are formed 1 by slitting of the blank as indicated at 9, these serving to stiffen the central portion 5 between the two sides when the blank is folded into the completed pocket and provide a top finish a well as to permit increased length of the pocket while at the same time conserving material.
In setting up the particular pocket or compartment shown in Figs. 3 to 8 of the drawings, which is only one possible embodiment of the invention, the portions 4-4' are "folded 'on the scoring lines 8 and along the scoring lines 1, I and H. The flaps or portion l3 are brought together and glued or otherwise permanently attached to each other as is shown in Fig. 6.
The several pockets are secured together by gluing the outer faces of the pockets to adjacent pockets, as for example as indicated at ,ll at the points stippled in Fig. 3, and the two outer pockets of the assembly are secured directly to the inner faces of the covers by gluing or in an equivalent manner.
When the covers are closed as shown in Fig. 1, the pockets are compactly folded together, and when the covers are opened, as for example flat, as shown in Fig. 2, the pockets are opened up or expanded. When the file is opened up as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 8, phonograph records indicated at l8 may be inserted through the slit or slot l4, or as readily withdrawn from the pocket. While ordinarily, only one record is placed in a pocket, of course, where the pockets are'made large enough by properly proportioning' the parts, two records may be inserted, but ordinarily this is not desirable. Each of the ockets may be provided with a suitable space designated l9, for the insertion of material indicating the par: ticular content of the pocket, as for example, the name of the record or the composer or such other material as desired.
It will be noted that when the file is open, as shown in Fig. 2, th records .l8 are disclosed and project from the pocket from which they may be readily picked out. When, however, the file is closed. and the pockets contracted, the record is almost entirely confined or enclosed, .and as a result, is fully protected. The cut out portion l permits the ready grasping of the edge of the record when confined in the closed pocket.
Illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 is amodified form of construction wherein the envelopes or pockets proper are formed from one'or more sheets of material. while the cover portion i formed from one or more other separate sheets. The modified form illustrated embodies a back 3' and a plurality of side walls 4 joined together at the fold lines 2| and 22, a narrow bottom portion 23 being formed between each pair of fold .line 22. The blank illustrated in Fig. 11 is foldedin opposite directions on the fold lines 2i and 22 respectively,
tobring adjacent side walls 4' back to back as clearly illustrated in Fig. .10 and adjacent walls secured to one another along their side edges by gluing or the like. The wing portions I2 and I3 are folded in the same manner as the corresponding portions I2 and I3 of the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 to 7 with the adjacent portions l3 being brought together and glued or otherwise attached to each other thereby forming a pocket similar to that previously described with the exception of the central or cover portion 5. Also preferably formed from the blank are a plurality of flaps 24 positioned adjacent the fold lines 2|, the flaps 24 being adapted to extend above the pockets as clearly illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10. As in the case of the previous construction the side walls 4' of the two outermost envelopes are glued or otherwise secured to th inner face of the cover members 2'. Cooperating I with the pockets so formed is a cover member 5,
the latter being provided with a plurality of slots l4 and having cover portions 6' corresponding to the portions 6 of the previous construction. As illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 the cover member 5' is folded in opposite direction on the fold lines I and 8, the folded member assuming substan-'- tially the shape illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10. The cover member 5' is attached to the respective pockets by means of the flaps 24 which are secured to the lower face of th adjacent portions 6 thereby forming a completed structure similar in general appearance to that illustrated in Figs. 3 to 8 with the exception of the absence of the portions l6. As in the case of the latter construction detailed information of the various rec'- ords may be placed upon the cover 5'.
While bottom portions 23 are illustrated between each pair of foldlines 22, if desired,.a single fold line may be employed. Obviously, as I have shown in Fig. 11, the pockets or envelopes being formed from a single sheet of material, if
- desired, the modified construction may be pro-' duced by utilizing a plurality of individual or multiple blanks without departing from the spirit of my invention, the same being also true of the cover member 5. The general operation of the construction shownin Figs. 9 to 12 inclusiv is similar to that of the construction previously described and obviously in either case the device may be made in various sizes and contain any desired number of pockets.
It will be noted that in the construction illustrated the portions 6 and 6' form in effect a continuous cover portion for the pockets or envelopes, at th same time providing mean for spreading the pockets when the-book is opened and containing information regarding the contents of the respective pockets.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement. and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
