This invention relates to a power ler, and it is an object of the invention Ito provide an apparatus of this kind wherein a filing element is supported for reciprocation and wherein such operation lof the filing velement is effected by a power driven unit, such as an electric motor.
Another object of the invention is to provide la iiling apparatus including a hand grasp having means for ysupporting a filing element for reciprocation and `wherein the desired reciprocation o'f the lng element is accomplished through the action of `a power unit.
It isalso an object of the invention to provide a filing apparatus of a power type and wherein the apparatus is of a type to be readily portable.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in `the combination and arrange- 'ment of the several parts of my improved power 'ler whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with 'reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating a filing apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, with certain of the parts in elevation.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, .'B denotes a base of -desired dimensions and which; as herein disclosed, is in the form of an inverted dish. Suitably mounted upon the top wall I of the base member B is a motor M of an electrical type and wherein the operating circuit for such motor M is under. control of a conventional switch 2. Within the base member B and intersecting the same is a plate 3. This plate 3 is positioned a desired distance below the top plate I of the base member B and is removably held in place by stud bolts, one of which being indicated at 4 in Figure 1. Depending within the base member B is the drive shaft 5 of the motor M, the lower portion of said shaft being received with an upwardly facing bearing B carried by the plate 3. Fixed to rotate with this shaft 5 is a pinion 'l which meshes with a gear wheel 8. This gear wheel 8 is fixed to the upper end portion of a shaft B which is rotatably disposed through the bearing l provided therefor and carried by the plate 3. The shaft S is maintained in working position by the thrust member II and the removable holding nut I2.
The gear 8 is provided with an opstanding pin ifi eccentrically arranged with respect to the axial center ofthe gear 8 and this pin I4 is engaged'within a socket .member I5 to which is securely fastened, as at I6, an end portion of a flexible member I'I preferably a wire strand of requisite gage. This flexible member I'l is freely disposed through :an elongated flexible tube I8 of desired length, and which tube has its inner end portion fixedly'secured, as at I9, vto the base member B and extending within said base member. l
The opposite or outer-end portion of this flexible member or conduit I8 is rigidly secured, vas at 23, to an end portion of an Yelongated hand grasp 2l. This hand grasp 2I has disposed axially therethrough a' bore 22 in which is 'snugly and slidably engaged an elongated member 23. The outer end portion o'f the flexible member I1 extends within the `rear end portion of the bore 22 of the hand grasp 2| and is securely anchored, as at 24, -to the inner or inserted end portion of the elongated member 23 so that upon rotation of the gear 8 the member I1 will effect reciprocation of the member 23. The stroke of this reciprocation will, of course, depend upon the position cf the pin I4 with respect to the axial center of the gear 8 and the speed of reciprocation will be determined by the speed of rotation of the gear 8.
In the present embodiment of my invention,
the member 23 is cylindrical in form and is engaged directly within a tubular sleeve 25 tightly tted within the bore 22 of the hand grasp 2|. The forward end portion of the sleeve 25 is provided with a key 23 extending inwardly thereof so as to be received within a groove 2l provided in the periphery of the member 23 and extending lengthwise thereof. This key 23 provides means to hold the member 23 against rotation and the groove 2l is of sufhcient length to allow the desired reciprocation of the member 23. The outer end portion of the member 23 is at all times extended beyond the outer end of the hand grasp ZI, or more particularly the sleeve 25, and said extended end portion of the member 23 carries a chuck 28 of any conventional or preferred type which is adapted to hold a ling element 29. This ling element 29 is preferably of a flat rasp type.
The forward end portion of the hand grasp 2l has secured to the periphery thereof, as at 3), a spirit level 3l of a conventional type, but preferably including degree graduations 32. This level 3| is so mounted on the hand grasp 2| to have the tube thereof disposed lengthwise of the hand grasp 2|.`
It is believed to be obvious that with the provisionof the spirit level the Workman is enabled to readily determine whether or not he is filing level or at a desired angle within a limited range.
It is also to be stated that the apparatus as herein comprised is particularly adapted for use with filing elements that are relatively small in size, and it is to be further stated that the apparatus can be employed with equal facility in connection with other abrasive elements, saws, etc.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a power filer constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
l. A power filer including an elongated hand grasp, a reciprocating member carried by the hand grasp, one end of said reciprocating member extending beyond an end of the hand grasp, a tool holding chuck carried by the extended portion of the reciprocating member, means for reciprocating the member, and a spirit level carried by the hand grasp and extending longitudinally thereof.
2. A power filer including an elongated hand grasp, a reciprocating member carried by the hand grasp, one end of said reciprocating member extending beyond an end of the hand grasp, a tool holding chuck carried by the extended portion of the reciprocating member, means for reciprocating the member, and a spirit level carried by the hand grasp and extending longitudinally thereof, said spirit level being at the end portion of the hand grasp beyond which the reciprocating members extend.
3. A power filer including a base member of an inverted dish shaped configuration, a motor mounted upon the base member, a drive shaft depending from the motor and extending through the base member, a pinion fixed to the drive shaft at a point above the lower end of said drive shaft, a removable plate arranged within the lower portien of the base member, means for holding the plate within the base member, an upwardly facing bearing on the removal plate in which journals the lower extremity of the drive shaft, a shaft carried by the plate member and in parallel to the drive shaft, a gear fixed to said shaft and meshing with the pinion of the drive shaft, a fiexible conduit xed to and leading from the base member, a hand grasp, a reciprocating meniber carried by the hand grasp, a tool holding chuck carried by the reciprocating member, a flexible operating member extending through the flexible conduit and having one end engaged with the reciprocating member of the hand grasp, and means for connecting the opposite extremity of the flexible operator to the gear at a point eccentric to the axial center of the gear.

A power filer including a base member of an inverted dish vshaped configuration, a motor mounted upon the base member, a drive shaft depending from the motor and extending through the base member, a pinion fixed to the drive shaft at a point above the lower end of said drive shaft', a removable plate arranged within the lower portion of the base member, means for holding the plate within the base member, an upwardly facing bearing on the removable plate in which journals the lower extremity of the drive shaft, a shaft carried by the plate member and in parallel relation to the drive shaft, a gear fixed to said shaft.
and meshing with the pinion of the drive shaft, an upstanding pin eccentrically fixed on the gear, a flexible conduit fixed to and leading from the base member, a hand grasp, a reciprocating member carried by the hand grasp, a tool holding chuck carried by the"re`ciprocating member, a flexible operating member extending through the fiexible conduit and having one end engaged with the reciprocating member of the hand grasp, and a socket fixed to the opposite extremity of the iiexible operator and fitting over the upstanding eccentric pin.
